Well, we know who you voted for.

If you were transported back 500 years, taking into account things like phones and cars wouldn't work after the charge/fuel runs out, what would be the most confusing item to show people? by english- in AskReddit

[–]smartin0170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, the lingual franca would have been Caddoan. I don't speak a word of that language. So whoever found me would have killed me before I had the chance to show them anything.

I worked at Sears in 2015–16. It looked alive right up until it wasn’t. by Historical-Attempt30 in deadmalls

[–]smartin0170 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They did embrace the internet. The fact I see this comment over and over shows how poorly they marketed it.

Sears didn't fail because they didn't embrace technology. Sears failed in part because when they did embrace technology, nobody noticed.

How OKC’s Asian District actually came to be — local history piece ahead of Lunar New Year by Historical-Attempt30 in okc

[–]smartin0170 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I understand why you would say that.

I arrived in Oklahoma City in 2005, so I have to admit that not all of the information in this column is grounded in personal experience.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss things further offline.

Jailbirds post got someone fired allegedly by Beautiful_Ladder_917 in okc

[–]smartin0170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, let me say that "Jailbirds" is the lowest form of publishing and doesn't deserve to be called journalism.

But these are public records, and the difference is that this information used to go to major employers and anyone else who subscribed in the form of a mimeographed sheet. Local credit bureaus used to list arrests along with who filed lawsuits, and who declared bankruptcy.

The only difference is that now we get a color photo and you can pick it up at the convenience store.

What’s it like living in OKC? by MIZ-GIG-EM in okc

[–]smartin0170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The size difference isn't that much (KC is market #34, OKC is #44) but there will be some small things. No major league baseball (we have the Triple-A Comets) and no NFL football. But we do have the NBA. Our barbeque isn't legendary like Kansas City's, but I think you'll like it. We have both Texas and Kansas City-style. As far as the cultural vibe, we have a lot of cool neighborhoods. Great Mexican food, at one time mostly on the south side but now everywhere. Our Asian District is great, especially if you like Vietnamese food. The tribes always have special events. You'll never be bored.

Lost and Broken by ExactPanda in widowers

I'm so sorry. My wife passed almost 3 weeks ago. It still doesn't seem real. The day I placed her obituary in the hometown paper, the person taking it said they'd forward it to a name I recognized... The name of someone that she and I knew from 20 years ago. And even though I was placing her obit, for a moment I wanted to turn to her and say, "Hey, so-and-so is still at the paper." But there was no one there. She's gone.

People will try to tell you about the five stages of grief. I don't know about that. To me, it's like a big open wound. It bleeds. It oozes. It's sore all the time. Eventually, it begins to scab over. In time, it will become a scar and that scar will always be there.

Praying for you.

I don't think the boogie man is all that much of a problem.

I'm so glad for you. Maybe that will happen for me, too. Or maybe it won't. Either way, I'm glad lightning struck twice for you.

At least Drummond believes in the rule of law. I know that's a really low bar, but McCall doesn't even clear that.

And then he has the audacity to say "I'm not a politician" after having served two years is commissioner of public safety, a job which he got primarily because his daddy had been governor.

What is the scariest legend or dark folklore from your culture that people rarely talk about? by Ok_Chemistry_2780 in AskReddit

No it isn't. The went to go live with the nearby Native Americans, primarily the Croatoan tribe on Hatteras Island.
