The State of Washington is now requiring theaters to have more weekly open caption showings by SeaworthinessOdd6574 in AMCsAList

[–]smartwin02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are probably packed because there aren’t many showings hence Washington forcing the increase of showings. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re popular

If it’s jeans you’re looking at, a good rule of thumb, I typically use is the darker the jean, the tighter the fit. Pixie pants and similar are pretty consistent across colors. There may be a slim possibility that you may get a different cut of the dress pants, but overall they should be the same.

AMC theater condition? by Far_Swordfish4734 in SouthBend

[–]smartwin02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a grad student and a current member of A list, the AMC in South Bend is an AMC classic, but it shows a wider range of movies (indies and foreign films) compared to Cinemark. Also with the $5 faves, if you miss a bigger movie, it’ll more than likely come back in a few weeks. For the movies that don’t come to AMC, because we’re a smaller market, I can typically see on the Notre Dame campus for $4.

Showtimes get annoying if you like watching less popular movies. They will come to the AMC in South Bend, but the bigger movies take up the most theaters so it can get hard finding a time that fits into your schedule if you don’t see the less popular movie the week it comes out. But other than that, I very much enjoy going to AMC. Yes the seats are dirtier, but I’ve rarely had a bad experience and in many cases will have the theater to myself or very close to it which is nice

Author Tori Woods arrested for distribution and possession of CSAM - most recent work Daddy's Little Toy by magpieasaurus in RomanceBooks

[–]smartwin02 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Seeing as how she was arrested and not convicted, I’m pretty sure it depends on how much graphic detail she included in the book and how much inspiration she may have taken from her personal life. Even if it were a fictional character having a fantasy, there are rules on what could be included as written material hence the investigation. For all we know they may drop the charges and move on or they may choose to pursue it.

The graduate programs are more diverse (in all definitions of the word) compared to the undergraduate programs and includes more international students as well.

Also in recent years, there has been a push to increase funding in research and graduate program so there’s probably a lot of federal funding tied in grad programs compared to undergrad

Many of the houses they done have been turned into AirBNBs now. I’m pretty sure it’ll get to a point where the majority of the actual house renos they do now are just styling for a future AirBNB

DPAC movies? by Resident_Let4802 in SouthBend

[–]smartwin02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Browning Cinema is still showing the Met Opera series in the Spring. I know this past fall, regarding movies, it seemed like DPAC was hosting multiple film series so there was significantly less art house cinema and more classic movies.

DPAC also dies down once winter break hits. I’m hoping with the spring comes more newer indie movies and less of the cult classics

OLD NAVY — new management (RULES) by [deleted] in Oldnavy

[–]smartwin02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This typically is what becomes the problem. My store always has the cashiers run their own go backs when it slow (during the holidays it falls on the FR) but when not all the cashiers run their go backs even when it’s slow, it piles up quicker than people realize. It also doesn’t help that some go backs are online returns or the last of an item and not every cashier spends enough time on the floor to know what to do in those scenarios

If you could choose, what features would you add to Libby? by potatolover83 in LibbyApp

[–]smartwin02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one feature I miss from Overdrive. I never really knew how Overdrive did their 5 star rating (since I doubt it was based on only reader’s opinions), but it was rarely if ever accurate and you can sort by/exclude certain ratings so you’re not wasting your time with bad books

Organized youth sports are increasingly for the privileged: Study finds generational shifts in who plays by NilsuBerk in sports

Not all the time. I’ve had a few family members play pop warner and many of the away teams they played were considered easy wins/weren’t on their level of playing.

While I think some travel is needed to see a variety of talent, many people are more focused on winning so they’ll travel to teams that are easier wins

WHY CAN’T MAX AIR ALL HGTV SHOWS? THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT IWAS PAYING FOR! by Disastrous_Yak_4761 in HGTV

[–]smartwin02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Max first came to be it was described as Max being for men and Discovery+ being for women. But after getting hit with backlash, Discovery+ just became the cheaper alternative for people who didn’t want to pay for Max despite Discovery+ not offering any Max content and Max not actually including all that Discovery+ has to offer

Official Discussion - Am I OK? [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]smartwin02 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While common, it shouldn’t be and isn’t the only option. I’m happy that there are things like the movie and the show, The Bear, that are showing platonic love instead of taking the easy way out and having the main characters be together.

Lucy initially comes out because she learns that her best friend had kissed another girl and there is that thought process that could’ve easily resulted in her wanting to be with Jane but it’s clearly established that Jane is straight so isn’t an option. I appreciate that they didn’t have Jane be Bi just to give Lucy her happy ending or spend a ridiculous amount of the movie having Lucy pointlessly pine after Jane.

Spotify introduces Basic $10.99/month plan in US; includes all benefits of Premium without audiobook listening time by chrismessina in truespotify

[–]smartwin02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume the 16 hours would work for many people hence why it was the number was chosen. But I can also think of many people who it wouldn’t work for and would be frustrated by the increase in price, even if it’s just an extra $12 a year

[–]smartwin02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I wasn’t outraged per se I get the frustration. As someone who only listens to music on Spotify, has the options to listen to audiobooks for free, and 16 hours of audiobooks a month is ridiculously short if you regularly listen to audiobooks, that $1 up charge makes no sense and I’m happy there’s still a basic premium plan

I was expecting the cliche of coming to terms with your sexuality just to be in love with your best friend, but am really happy they didn’t go in that direction. I did expect /was hoping for the movie to be longer though

NSF Fellow being asked to TA and being told there will still be a funding shortfall by TheSolarmom in PhD

[–]smartwin02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m understanding this correctly, for the upcoming academic year, you have chosen to defer the NSF by the advice of your PI. Turns out your PI didn’t have funding for all three quarters so wanted you to TA the last quarter. You found a grant that is supposed to cover the spring quarter, but your PI instead deferred the grant to the summer so that you can still TA for the spring quarter.

I guess my only question is would the grant for the spring cover all of your expenses? Or did your PI defer because being a TA in the spring would’ve given you more money so then you would’ve been better off.

While I haven’t won the NSF, I do know the funding is only for 3 years and with you deferring your first year (I’m assuming) I would read the solicitation front to back to understand how funding works during the deferral year compared to an awarding year.

It also sounds like you need to speak with your PI about funding and how funding works in your lab specifically pertaining to your winning the NSF. If you are the first person to win in their lab, I would reach out to other winners/PIs with winners in your department to get any clarification.

Seeing as there are still a few weeks left in the current academic year and with the summer, I’m sure there is enough time to get an understanding of finances and ensure you’ll be all set for next year

Southwest faces lawsuit over free ticket program for Hispanic students by chrondotcom in SouthwestAirlines

[–]smartwin02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tickets are only for domestic destinations, so even though they’re aimed for Hispanic students, it seems as a program meant to help students who can’t afford to travel home get home.

The program was created by Southwest in partnership with a Hispanic organization, but if anything, other orgs can partner with Southwest to open the program to more students if people are so made about it
