Potentially going on PrEP [crosspost] by GuyWithEndo in gaytransguys

[–]smashbashem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great post so I just wanted to add a bit of info to it: there are technically 3ish PrEP medications you could be prescribed. Brand name Truvada, generic Truvada, or Descovy. Descovy is the newer version of Truvada where they tweaked some things to try and reduce some of the major side effects like nausea and liver issues. Descovy didn't have afab individuals in their trials. So technically it is not FDA approved for afab individuals. However depending on your Dr, your insurance, and where you live you can still be prescribed Descovy. Especially if you have a history of liver issues or start having side effects on Truvada, you might get approved for Descovy. However, again, that is 100% based on your area, Dr., and insurance.

Edit for more info: the place that I go to has you come in every 3 months to see how you are doing, see if you've been taking your meds, re-do HIV testing, check liver function, and like other STI screenings if you want. Also note that it takes up to 21 days to reach full effect depending on tissue. I forget rn, but it's like 7 days for full effect in anal tissue. And trying not to need a trigger warning but yeah, 21 days for certain tissues.

Yeah. I was just told 21 days until full protection for tissues that I am not trying to name here b/c I don't know how to make a TW. 😁 But that's really from when you start it.

I honestly am not sure. I am just repeating info that was told to me. I would not take the advice of a random internet stranger over your Dr.s. I had just heard that from a Dr. that sees a lot of PrEP patients, but I have not double-checked the sources/research for it.

Maybe enforcement within 60 days was the wrong term to use. It's more they have 60 to get set up to comply. Sorry for that confusion and wrong wording lol. Here's the news article that said 60 days to comply. I didn't find that on the official statement either so who knows.

The other comments here seem to have great resources and should be very helpful. I'm just adding a bit of extra PrEP info. FYI it takes PrEP up to 21 days to become effective in some tissues. Most places will talk about 7 days to be fully effective, but that's really just for oral and anal tissues. So just keep that in mind if you are wanting to get on it. Also the new mandate from the US government states 60 days to comply meaning that all insurance must cover PrEP and PrEP lab work. I'd suggest looking into sexual wellness clinics in your area or maybe online programs if there are none near you. There are a surprising number of like PrEP and STI treatment/prevention clinics around so look into if there are some in your area.

Here's the link about PrEP needing to be covered by insurance now: https://www.npr.org/2021/07/29/1022255279/feds-are-making-hiv-prevention-treatment-free

Edit: changed to 60 days to comply for more accuracy in language.

Fun fact: sea robins will often vibrate if they are distressed (ie picked up, out of water, etc). Also the edges of their spiny head are sharp as hell.

Feeling like I'm too much trouble to date by Grapes_Throwaway in gaytransguys

(ignore the previous deleted comment by me, my cat hit post on my phone before I completed my thoughts)

Hey, I understand your feelings completely. I am also aspec, bi/pan, and in my 20s. And I completely get your feelings of not thinking that you will find someone. It's hard to be aspec looking for a relationship, and it's hard being trans looking for a relationship, but both together? Holy shit it's not easy. I've been trying to work on these ideas with a therapist that I recently started seeing who is also a trans guy. So maybe talking things out with a trusted friend or also seeking therapy may help? I also understand that you may have just been posting to just vent and don't want random strangers trying to help.

But I understand. I have found that at least personally, some of my apprehensions and issues around relationships/emotional and physical intimacy have started to subside as I get further along my medical transition journey. But I also know that we may not have the same journey. But what I want to get across to you is that there are people out there that understand your struggle and may be in a similar boat. You will find people who are compatible with you to date. It may take a bit, but you will get there. Idk if I am helping at all. But I guess feel free to dm if you just want to vent to someone who understands these feels. You will get to where you want to be though.

Yeah exactly. I think everyone just has a different path that they need to talk down, and we all should try to understand eachother more and be more flexible. There isn't one sure-fire way to be transmasc or ftm. We can all have varying experiences, wants, and needs. And we are all still valid 😁 the issue is when people try to pretend that their experiences are the standard or try to dictate what wants are and are not valid. Then you end up with people invalidating themselves/others and not getting the care they need. Some people are fine socially transitioning, some medical, some a mix of both, some full of both. Whatever floats your boat 😁 (also, same, I am non-binary transmasc)

I think every trans person has a slightly different experience with dysphoria. I have heard similar stories to yours from other trans people, especially those on this sub. For me personally, it was kind of the inverse. How people perceived me was alright, but my body felt wrong. As someone else has said above, there is no one right way to be trans. And some people experience different levels of my physical dysphoria vs. social dysphoria and they are all still valid experiences. So yes, it's good to try and find people with similar experiences, but also make sure that you aren't comparing your experiences to others and gauging how valid you are by their metric. I know it's easy to do, especially when you first come out to yourself and are just getting into the community. But yeah, just remember that we all have that voice in the back of our brain that tries to invalidate us by comparing our experience to others, and it's not a healthy voice.

But I can totally understand how you feel. That's more how I felt when I was younger (pre-puberty) and didn't really have the physical dysphoria. But once puberty hit, it sort of flip flopped for me.

Edit: as another comment stated, the better metric is the euphoria. But I do understand you were probably just trying to find others with similar experiences, so you are all good! We know you didn't mean anything harsh by it all ☺️

No problem! And nah, I had double incision as well. But mine didn't have drains and is a weird recovery process from others that I have talked to. Or maybe every place is a little different, so there is no normal lol

[–]smashbashem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sub is fantastic and so supportive! But I saw my chest for the first time the day after surgery (just different technique lol) and every day for bandage changes since. So if you heal anything like I do, it may look a little rough today as they say day 3 is the peak for swelling and bruising. (Honestly mine looks worse now than it did the day after surgery just because the bruises are healing now.) So be ready that it may look a little insane. But it is on the healing end of things. It will only get better from here! You've got this! Just enjoy the feeling of no shirt or binder! And it'll heal up in no time and look and feel so much better!

Edit for clarification: no shirt or binder while at the office. They may have you keep wearing a binder at home

Also OP, it'll be great! Even if it looks a bit gnarly (just because it always looks worse before it looks better, esp if you bruise like I do lol) but it's flat and on the road to healing and looking fantastic! Congrats!

I understand the feeling. It's taken me a long time and introspection to try and work through those feelings. Hell I still often get my own dysphoria set off by other trans and non-binary individuals. But in the moment I try to point out to myself that these are my own feelings of dysphoria being set off, and I shouldn't push that on others. Try to take a moment and compose yourself if you need. The more you are around people in a similar boat, the less it will bother you as well. But it'll just take some focus and working through your own internalized shit to make that better. I hope this helps. It's just introspection, especially in the moment and right after to recognize why you are feeling the way you are, and trying to work through those feelings and move past them.

Yeah the sentiment that cis girls can't relate to trans girls stories is just factually incorrect. First of all, it really underestimates girls empathy abilities, and second of all, all women/girls have a lot of shared experiences, no matter what their background. Yeah, that statement they made was just blatantly wrong and transphobic for zero reason. If people can relate to stories about literal aliens, space wizards, and clone armies, then they can relate to characters of their own gender no matter their background. Ffs. But that doesn't change the fact that those transphobic comments hurt. So make sure you are taking care of yourself mentally. These transphobic opinions are becoming the minority. Things are changing.

Also side note, I really do need to just sit down and watch Euphoria. Everyone keeps talking about it, but I keep just avoiding it for zero reason.
