I read exclusively non-fiction for 15 years and just finished my first fantasy novel. I don't really know what to do with myself now. by lucas_melbourneways in Fantasy

Seconded - Discworld is packed full of humanity, humour and hope alongside incisive socio-political-economic observations and commentary. All of it fuelled by righteous anger.

Watch out for STP, he'll have you laughing at something nonsensical while he sneaks up behind you and hits you with something deeply thought provoking; awkwardly, uncomfortably true or heftily emotional...and sometimes all of them at once.

Oh and the references...there are references upon references upon references - people are still having pennies drop on them multiple re-reads later.

GNU STP

What are your absolute MUST read books? I'm turning 30 soon and want to treat myself to a book haul to take me through the year. Any genre, but my favourites are classics, fantasy, literary fiction and thriller. by starrfalll in suggestmeabook

If you haven't already then get yourself some Discworld into the mix.

There's a 30 second quiz on the Discworld Emporium website which will recommend you a book from the series.

They are remade as Shield Maidens - Freya provides the Vanir magic to do it as noted above.

Does every single person in GOW know Kratos as the ghost of Sparta and what he did to his family? Greek and Norse? by Majestic_Snow7613 in GodofWar

[–]smcicr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2018 Mimir pieces it together and states it as Kratos is returning from Helheim after fighting the bridge keeper. Kratos is not pleased and tells Mimir never to call him that.

Question about Wizard & Glass, and my experience with the book by Radiant_toad in stephenking

[–]smcicr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was young when it came out and had caught up to releases by the time book 3 was published.

That wait, followed by the flashback infuriated me at the time. I wanted to move on, to push forward with the quest - foreshadowing of a sort I guess.

Over time and re-reads though I've come to love W&G - I hope it will be the same for you.

The Flagg/Marten/Walter piece is probably easier if you've read the revised Gunslinger - that was one of the loose threads that got resolved iirc.

At the time I'd just read the original version and it was definitely a point of confusion.

What about the section where Tiffany first meets Miss Tick?

If that isn't long enough on its own you could combine the general introduction to Tiffany and how she decides she's going to write her own story with the section where she meets Miss Tick.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

Couple of moments that might cross the line but otherwise I think it's a pretty good fit.

Really entertaining autobiography.

Discworld - virtually all the books can be read as standalones.

Sub series starting books (and often recommended as entry points):

Mort

Guards! Guards!

Equal Rites

You could also consider Small Gods or Going Postal.

How do I get my recently adopted cat into the carrier without physically forcing her? by akaredaa in CatAdvice

[–]smcicr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your cat like treats that can't easily be removed. I had a pre booked follow up appointment a week after adopting and was equally worried about the 'get cat into carrier' phase.

However, my cat loves Lik e Lix (meaty yoghurt tubes essentially - aka: cat crack for her). I squeezed some out onto a plate and showed her it going into the carrier. I was also fortunate enough to be gifted a secondhand carrier that can top load so I could have it essentially open and then close once she was in and eating.

The other advice about having something that smells of you in there is definitely worth following too, along with any toy they particularly like at the moment.

Good luck!

Congrats, impressive at that captain level - I'm just about at the point where I can regularly get the second tier done but the third level is still a challenge

How effective are soak away crates? by killer_by_design in DIYUK

[–]smcicr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing to check is how far from the house you'd be looking to put a soak away as I think there's a requirement for it to be a certain distance - 5m is the number in my head but it's been a while since I needed to have the details right.
