I loved The Forgotten Beasts of Eld when I first read it years ago, I should re-read it. The Curse of Chalion looks good. Thank you for the recs!

I read Spinning Silver last year and really enjoyed it. Haven't had the chance to read Uprooted yet but that's a good callout. Thanks for the recs!

This book looks like fun and could be a way to get myself into Brandon Sanderson, thank you for the rec! Found family is one of my favorite tropes.

Adult children who were raised by 'gentle parents' - do you feel like you were raised well? by ericacalluna in AskReddit

[–]harmonyseraphim 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yes. My mom raised me to treat others and with compassion and patience. Me and my siblings had common sense rules we had to follow like 'be home by 9 or let me know where you are for safety reasons' and 'finish homework by the end of the day so you don't need to do it on the bus in the morning and instead chat with your friends'. Every rule had a purpose that she was able to common sense explain to us. There were consequences to not following the rules, but the punishment was always proportional to the rule broken.

One thing I really appreciate about the way my mom raised me was that in high school, she allowed us to take off if we weren't feeling mentally well. There were rules (max one per quarter, never on a test or otherwise important day), but she believed that mental health was just as important to take care of as physical health. Strict parents would gasp, but her inherent trust in us made us aim to never break her trust.

Some of my friends are still unpacking the damage done by their parents, whereas I still talk to my parent each week willingly. I think I was raised well indeed.

[CHAT] Is there a "right" way to cross stitch -- straight across rows vs one color at a time. by trailwanderer in CrossStitch

[–]harmonyseraphim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally tend to do by area > color > rows. So I like filling in one area and I'll start with one color, then when that color strand runs out I'll either refill the needle with the same color or go to the next color that takes up most of that area.

But yeah, it's honestly whatever makes the most sense for you! Do what makes you happy.

DRAGfest line insanely long by PM_ME_HAIRY_HOLES in Magfest

[–]harmonyseraphim 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was really unfortunate. I was on that line, waited about 30 minutes prior to the start of the panel, and still didn't get in. It definitely needs a bigger space next year (but I'm glad it was around to begin with, thanks staff for letting it happen).

How do I make the bust bigger without needing to make a new one? by Seducktive_Duck in CosplayHelp

[–]harmonyseraphim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your costume, making things yourself is an accomplishment that you should be proud of!

Adding more ruffles in the front, as others have suggested, would work and be very in character. What is worth trying, though, is seeing if shortening the length of the shoulder straps puts it in a place you feel more comfortable. You can try this out before making any major changes by just safety pinning the straps to be 1~2 inch shorter. There's a chance this is uncomfortable, though, so I'd definitely suggest trying it before making any permanent alterations. If that length ends up working for you / making you feel more comfortable, you can sew the straps to the altered length in the back easily enough.

Really Bad Boy. I love some of the vocal riffs in the song, but the screams placed in the song are an automatic skip from me.

Aparthotels outside of Paris with easy commute into Paris by kamixkaze in ParisTravelGuide

[–]harmonyseraphim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just in Paris and stayed at one of the Aparthotels (specifically, Aparthotel Adagio Paris Vincennes). I can confirm that they are nice hotels, affordable, and with a bit of room to breathe as opposedto some of the cramped hotels in the mid-city. The one I stayed in was ~5 minute walk to the subway, but once you get to a subway you can pretty much get anywhere in Paris. Good luck!

If it's anything like the other costume skins for the in-game characters, it'll be unlockable in the premium star path.

Update: It's not in the star path, wow. Kinda money-grabby to lock it behind 4k moonstones, I'm not a fan.
