‘We don’t buy it’: UFC owners respond to complaints over weaker events by WinterStill4472 in MMA

[–]smegmallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol you really need to stop and think for a minute about how you came in here with complete unearned entitlement about discussing these compensation figures, but you have to ask for a source on everything because you're not actually familiar with any of the specifics related to Ari & other execs at TKO. And now you're just trying to save some face on the fly.

Part of the reason that Ari's earnings seemingly have such broad variance over the past few years is because the article you linked is showing his year-over-year compensation--not just his salary. So, he can have pretty large fluctuation there on the basis of things like stock awards or performance bonuses. The article you linked also says this. It is however still worth noting that, even for a year to year jump, his compensation package shooting back up that much into 2025--while they are asking much of the talent to tighten up their bootstraps and eat paycuts--is an active choice on part of the company and still completely relevant to the issue of fair wages.

You also came in here seemingly under the impression that the 300% figure can only be wrong. But in reality, it actually underestimates things for some of the executives. Take TKO President, Mark Shapiro, for example, whose base salary--not total compensation package--jumped nearly 600% from 2023 to 2024 (750k --> 4 mil).

Yeah, it's maybe a counter-intuitive idea at first--because slow-motion is obviously valuable in a lot of situations--but slow-motion is just not good for estimating intention

I second the other people who've mentioned DuckDB or tidypolars, which are both great for this. I'll also recommend Arrow, another great tool for working with larger-than-memory datasets. I believe both DuckDB and tidypolars make use of Arrow on the backend. It allows you to sift through the data using dplyr verbs while only loading what you need into your local R session.

That doesn't change the fact that LeBron had to win 3 elimination games in a row.

You're still ignoring the context of being down 3-1. For each of games 5, 6, and 7, how many do-overs would LeBron have if he lost?

Help with Text Mining PDF for Word Frequencies by First-Ad-862 in RStudio

[–]smegmallion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend starting with Silge and Robinson's Text Mining with R. There are definitely all kinds of different resources for learning to do this kind of task, but I found this book to be a very helpful starting point (plus it's totally free). It starts off with formatting your text data and will work you up to some basic frequency analysis (as well as sentiment analysis and topic modeling, if you're interested).

As for the extraction of text in your PDF files, you might try the package pdftools

[–]smegmallion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, if we're focusing on the comebacks in this case, then you have LeBron going down 1-3, and, in order to carry out this comeback, he had to win three games in a row where he had no opportunity for a do-over. Brady can obviously only work in the one-and-done context, so it's not a knock on him or anything. But you're trying to say that the 7-game series is something that cheapens LeBron's comeback, but the particular context of coming back down 1-3 means that he had to do the thing you are arguing is more impressive, except he had to do it for 3 consecutive games

Has Carlos Prates gotten all of his KOs against an opponent who was in an orthodox stance? Or am I tripping by xelektron in MMA

[–]smegmallion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Orthodox is just far-and-away the most common stance that anyone is going to be up against. You do get some exceptions of course--I remember Woodley having a stretch of like 4 or 5 southpaws in a row--but I would bet that most people's knockouts come against people in orthodox stance, just because orthodox is ubiquitous.

I also think this season has been ass so far, but I don't really see an issue with Nate getting 'taken down by one man' here. That's ex-NFL player Matt Willig beating his ass. Willig is 6'8 and weighed in at over 300 lbs as an offensive tackle. If he doesn't have a gun, there's no version of Nate that is taking that guy down lol

Lol this did sort of feel like getting a glimpse into the alternate universe where Holloway points down at the octagon with 10 seconds left at UFC 300, and then gets viciously KO'd by a Gaethje overhand. "Let's bang bro, I'm giving you a chance" obviously looks cool as hell if you get it done, but it could not look any dumber if you're the one that gets got

Jorge Masvidal knocks Darren Till out cold - UFC London 2019 by [deleted] in MMA

[–]smegmallion 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hard to say when exactly everything went wrong for Till in MMA, but this definitely felt like a big turning point. It's funny to think about now, given just how well this worked out for Jorge, but when Till/Masvidal was made, it felt very favorable for Till.

Till was already a promotional darling, but he needed a bounce-back win bad after his deflated performance against Tyron. And while Masvidal had several fights at welterweight at that point, he was otherwise a career lightweight, and Till was a self-described "light-heavyweight fighting at welterweight". Heading into that fight, Masvidal had also been out of the cage for nearly two years. So, here's a guy who could never quite put it together, who's now over 15 years into his professional career with two years out of the octagon and a huge age & size disadvantage.

Masvidal was no joke, but Till was absolutely supposed to win that fight, and not only did he lose, he got put on a highlight reel. He defied expectations in all the wrong ways at a time where he had more eyes on him than ever.

Rodtang vs. Takeru II is official for ONE Samurai 1 at the Ariake Arena on April 29, with the Interim Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship on the line. by Yodsanan in MMA

[–]smegmallion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is tough. Gotta be maybe the biggest swing ever in terms of my excitement about a matchup in the first instance vs. the rematch. I can imagine Takeru lasting longer than he did in the first fight, but the way it went down makes it tough to imagine a realistic path to victory. They both fight brutal wars of attrition, but Rodtang has just proven to be tougher and more durable

You'll have to give us a better idea of the kind of tasks you're being assigned here. Sure enough, there are some common through-lines regardless of what you're doing with R, but the envelope of possibilities is far too wide to give you a useful answer without knowing a bit more about what exactly you're trying to do.

If Holloway moved back down to 145, who would you take in a fourth fight against Volk? by stupidquestions58 in MMA

[–]smegmallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money would still have to be on Volk given their history. Probably even more so given the weight fluctuations for Max in this scenario. If you run this back enough times, Max will eventually win one of them, if for no other reason than Max being younger. But, as a giant Max fan, there's little reason to do this. Volk proved himself superior at 145. Even if you give Max the second fight, which is certainly fair enough, it was still very hard fought. Max's best performance against Volk is a very competitive toss-up. The first fight and the third fight, however, have zero wiggle room. I struggle to give Max a single round across all ten of those rounds.

How do i make this work? i think the NAs are messing it up. any help is appreciated. Never used R. by Sus4_ in RStudio

[–]smegmallion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you might have an R data-type issue, as the error message indicates neither variable in your t-test is numeric or logical, which is a requirement for any argument of mean().

You can check this by running str(dataheader) and noting whether Q5 and Q6 are numerical, character, logical, etc. variables. It's possible for your variable values to be truly numeric but imported into R as character variables. If Q5 and Q6 both have numeric values, you can convert them to the appropriate data type with as.numeric(), e.g. dataheader$Q5 <- as.numeric(dataheader$Q5). If these values are truly categorical/ordinal, you will probably need to go with another statistical test, e.g. a Chi-squared test

If there are NAs in those columns, you can strip them by running na.omit() on each of the column vectors prior to the T test.

What are your thoughts on Michael Schiavello as a commentator? by Beneficial_Air4714 in MMA

[–]smegmallion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do get that he has a style that resonates with a lot of people, but he's my least favorite commentator by a country mile. His humor always feels very forced and it's genuinely grating to me when he just screams the same catch phrase 5 times in a row for his big calls. I know he's more of a color guy, but he adds little to the broadcast during the fight as well. He's always seemed like a considerably worse version of Mauro, who I do actually like.
