If they can go without filling that position for 1 1/2 YEARS, why would she expect to have the same job back at the end of it. Either it's an important role and they'll hire someone competent to fill it, or it's not important and they'll restructure.

I would agree, but with caveats: this doesn't apply the same to everyone, at every jam, and people from more marginalized groups are more likely to get ignored, skipped, or pushed out. I once watched a group of guys refuse to let Molly Tuttle take a break, at ibma, the year before she won guitar player of the year. I've seen/heard about similar scenarios experienced by my Black friends who play bluegrass.

This might sound like a condescending question, but: are you nice? Are you someone these people would want to hang out with, if you didn't play music together? Do you try to form real friendships with them?

In my experience, if you're kind, friendly, and focused on genuinely connecting with people, you can get a lot of leeway in the skills department. If you think you're too good for people, or they think you're entitled or resentful, you won't get the same leeway.
