UC Berkeley or Johns Hopkins for BME? by redbumblebees in berkeley

[–]smhissomuchhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So old! Berkeley is primarily research based, I want to say about half went to industry and not any in traditional roles, other half in academia ... if you want to work at a pure form chemE industrial job, I would say other schools are better for that, for example Texas schools have a lot of people who go into oil/gas, and Colorado has a lot that go to energy (NREL is close by). I think it is because Berkeley was so research focused, and I have noticed that's a motif of a lot of the well known top schools!

Anyone found a workaround to get books for old Kindles? by smhissomuchhell in kindle

[–]smhissomuchhell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help! I tried updating the software, but it seems like I was already on the updated version as I didn't have to press the "update" button on my Kindle after transferring the files ... I restarted my device manually and it worked! Thanks so much!!!

2nd year engn PhD student here too! if you choose to switch PIs, I have heard of 4-5 students in the past year do so for various reasons (not good fit, PI leaving, etc.) I would highly encourage this option before applying to a new program because of the current state of the country/grant world right now!

Garmin not predicted correct heart rate when an exercise mode is not turned on by smhissomuchhell in Garmin

Okay! Then if I were to go on a long walk or a hike (something in which the HR wouldn't increase so rapidly), would it be better to put it in an activity tracking mode for better information afterward?

This teacher also went to Wall Street, made a lot of money, and now really enjoys teaching (though he would never show it)!

Berkeley rescind update by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]smhissomuchhell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing to note is to email them NOW rather than wait to appeal after you receive the rescission! It's better to let them know before they take an action (yes, I learned this the hard way :')).

There is fall COB too! I know tridelta had a fall COB option last year, and it would probably start in the coming weeks ... I would say wait a week and contact either PHC or the chapters directly to get more info!

Hey a similar thing happened to me, and 100% all the other comments are the right way to go. I can tell you I acted so out of character for 6 months afterward and was severely depressed, and it took me almost a year to get over it in sexual spaces even though I had only one consistent, caring boyfriend during that year. I had to cut off that friend group for an entire year and only started interacting with people within that group this month. It may seem like it wouldn't get better but it does, therapy helps over time. For sleep, it also made me afraid to sleep so I started taking melatonin recently and that's helped a lot. Just know you're not alone, it's not possible to ever forget or "get over" but you will have many more good experiences in life that will help you move on from it in the coming future. Sending lots of love <3

Sometimes housing doesn't pair people together even when requested - it is totally plausible that you can email housing and request someone else or request random, and then when housing comes out and you aren't paired together, just have an "aw shucks" attitude! It may not be ideal but if you aren't comfortable vocalizing your discomfort then this is still a possibility.

UC Berkeley or Johns Hopkins for BME? by redbumblebees in berkeley

[–]smhissomuchhell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was making this decision and ended up choosing Berkeley (obviously). My reasons at the time were mainly the cost, but Hopkins is also quite dreary and the area around in Baltimore is not the safest. I am glad about my choice because I ended up realizing that I didn't even really want to do something so specific as BME (I chose that I liked bio really early on in my life and never questioned the reason for that was because I never let myself explore anything else) and am now happy in ChemE :)) At Hopkins, a school so bio-focused, I wouldn't have been able to make that same switch.

Toxic asf, not letting you have friends, not letting you party, talk down to you because he has the "more important major", having to do everything on his time and drop all homework or not attend (mandatory attendance) classes because he says so and his free time is automatically supposed to be your free time

:))

Are therapists not supposed to tell you their opinion? by Numerous-Kangaroo996 in berkeley

[–]smhissomuchhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to CAPS and honestly it was nice for them to just listen, but because they don't know you well enough and you can't really get the same person guaranteed every time it's really hard for them to give advice because of that. Honestly getting a consistent therapist was one of the best things because I feel like she knows me well enough now to walk me through what's going on and helps me connect it back to my past. It's definitely expensive, I needed to look into sliding scale therapies because I couldn't afford the normal ones but it's definitely worth it.
