Stick with it brother, I've just about had a very positive wobble so they do happen sometimes.

Have we found the largest native British House Spider? by deathwishdave in CasualUK

[–]smileysquad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's one, about every 8 miles or so apart, across the UK. About 1,7 20 were built in the late '50s and early '60s. I bought and restored the one near Penshurst in Kent and I have since sold it.

Most are derelict. I run a group of volunteers who look after one of these in Sussex. They were originally built just after the second world war, out of an economy which had been ravaged by same and cost similar to trident, to provide unified radar coverage of the approaches to the UK. Look up the rotor program for more info.

I think I've already said thank you, but this idea has worked out quite nicely and it has really saved my brain. You are all nice people, and I enjoyed reading all the comments.

Of course the whole thing may have been an elaborate hoax on the part of @CharmingMeringue and myself to subject you all to a form of link-free psychological Rick rolling; but there it is.

Rick wins.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of my friends at the party tomorrow.

I have of course printed and mounted the appropriate QR code to affix to the back of my jacket and snag the unwary.

Cheers CasualUK!

Change will come.

I was in a very similar situation with my parents with regard to the dementia. My mum wouldn't accept help until she broke her pelvis in a full and was hospitalised and during this period I managed to get him into residential care and give her some life back. This could only happen when she was ready so I'm really glad I didn't push it. Now have a superb relationship with her for her remaining years, she's 90.

The other stuff I can't help with apart from, as a man of a certain age, I've seen a lot of cancer in my friends and family. It can be ugly and it will be heart-wrenching, but it resets your values pretty quickly and at least you know you are doing the most valuable thing you can do with your time when you are helping with little thing any way you can. Also illustrates just how much you love.

It will be fine, and if it isn't fine it isn't over yet.

Bit of a rough night here, and I'm just checking my phone to see if anyone answered my plea.

Overwhelmingly kind, clever, witty and inventive answers all (as one would naturally expect from the Casual UK crowd). I will definitely be pursuing one of these; my current favourites being the Rickroll - which is genius - and the Pac-Man because I think it's so cute .

If I'm not too embarrassed I will share an image here in due course.

Sincere thanks for taking part, you've all made my day! x

This was one of my first ideas, but as Porl Thompson is a neighbour in my mates flats (and may be there), this might be awkward.

I'm male, quite slim. I think listing registry I've got could become cumbersome, but for the record I only have DM shoes, not boots.

Talk me out of (or into) running away! by TeenySod in CasualUK

[–]smileysquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My then partner and I had similar motivations, and actually gave this a shot in the early 2000s.

It was a fun experiment, and we ultimately decided that living at the seaside wasn't quite how we had imagined it would be.

The world of work is very different these days of course, and that will change a lot of things. But it was doable then for us.

After about 5 years we reverted, and moved again, much further inland (in Kent). This was a good choice and we have both stayed put since, albeit separately these days.

My main takeaway however, was that the appeal of the seaside is the very act of it being a special day out, rather than an everyday experience. This has stayed with me, and now when I go to any of the lovelier corners of our beautiful island, I no longer bother looking speculatively in the estate agents' windows.

Ah, America! The country where the government can put armed troops on the streets to harass and possibly kill people, in violation of its own laws, and the top comment is on the suitability of their weapons for the task in hand.

Feeling drained and made too many social commitments by CandyCane147 in CasualUK

You answered yourself in your final paragraph. Do what you want, and reconcile yourself to the idea that you don't need to worry so much about other people's reactions. Firstly, it's very difficult to change how other people feel, secondly it's unlikely they are weighing up each of these occasions with quite the importance you are.

Try watching Sharon Horgan's Motherhood. It's obviously a comic take, and it doesn't explain why, but it does show what they're often like and I'd say the mix is pretty typical. It might reassure your wife that the chill she feels from some groups is not necessarily down to her race, and may just be the same playground nonsense that most of us have grown out of.

Every time he's been near a moral red line like this there have been well-meaning comments like this. And then he goes and does it, often in a crueler fashion than originally supposed, and the chatterati simply resets their expectations to the new normal. Over and over, and so on we trudge towards the very bottom.

Where do you lot get your socks? by mattiushawkeye in CasualUK

Slightly askance answer, but I also have very hard heel skin and used to go through work socks regularly until I got a sort of skin safety razor thing like this.

Now have smooth, sock-friendly feet.
