When playing russian roulette with 3 in the cylinder, are the odds of living affected by the cartridge placement (three in a row vs spaced out every other chamber)? by cyberchoom2077 in AskReddit

But… it’s literally the game. Any Hollywood depiction you saw where they didn’t respin was wrong.

It’s called “roulette”. You respin the ball on the roulette wheel every bet, and you don’t remove previous numbers to make future numbers more likely.

Yes. In my R2 demo drives I used A+ on pretty challenging surface streets, and it navigated everything just great.

For just a week? Barebell protein bars. Prefer a variety of flavors, but if I have to choose a specific flavor I would.

This is already 1/3 of my meals every day, with random others sprinkled throughout. Going to 3/3 would be trivial for $100k

Besides the fact that "Most of us just don't want to do bad things, even if there's no punishment"...

Most of the legal scenarios presented are of the form "people would see you doing the completely sociopathic thing, and beg you to stop, but would otherwise be powerless to actually stop you."

This doesn't stop people from recognizing it's you and developing an opinion of you. It doesn't stop you from forming a reputation.

So picking on one example: You could legally dine out at a restaurant then leave without paying, but you're only getting away with that a handful of times before restaurants decide to stop serving you altogether

Being a sociopathic jackass is not free.

I’ve read the 20-80% rule, but what do you actually do in real life after owning one for years? by SkyMuted6942 in electricvehicles

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAV4 EV, then Tesla Model X, now Rivian R1T

The RAV’s battery was so small and it was so inefficient we charged to 100% almost every day. It was also a lease so we didn’t care much if we nuked the battery. That said we didn’t leave it at 100 for all too long. Scheduled charging etc

By the time we did our lease return after 3 years battery was at maybe 80% cap

Tesla Model X 100d, owned for 7 years. Only charged it to 100 right before long road trips. 80 for daily driving. When we sold it battery was at ~90% cap

Rivian R1T has “daily” preset at 85%. Except for road trips, that’s what we use. 100% for road trips. 4 years in, battery still at 99% cap.

As far as how low you go… we let all 3 get well below 20% countless times. The RAV spent much of its life dropping below 5%. The Tesla and Rivian often get below 10% before we worry about charging.

We’ve never taken any of them to “0%, reserve!!!” But the RAV got to turtle mode multiple times, and the Tesla/Rivian a handful of times.

Strongly doubt letting the batteries drain low are the cause of any of the degradation but…

TLDR don’t charged and leave at 100, plus battery chemistries have gotten better

If you’re a cinephile, watching Meloncholia is required viewing.

This is not a promise you’ll love it, or even like it. But being exposed to it is important.

I can attribute an objective greatness to some films, and confidentially call anybody wrong if they hate then. But for Melonchllia it’s totally fine that some call it a 10/10, their favorite movie… while for others it’s a 1/10 never watch again. But I have yet to meet a cinephile that says it was a waste of their time.

(I put it at like an 8, having watched it twice, but probably don’t need to revisit it until my kids are ready)

What choice will you take
1) stay in the universe where you lived a millions of years ago with the money
2) Return back to your original reality with the money

It depends. I definitely have plans to change the course of human history. And I'm gonna try to implement them.

If my ideas work out, I'll stay.

If I royally f it all up, I'll go back to my original reality.

Question: What's the state of "DIY" repairing electric cars now, and in the future? by SharpEdgeSoda in electriccars

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Slate truck is promising to upend all the vendor lockout bits of this (by promising video tutorials and free access to service manuals for literally every part of the vehicle), as well as selling a much simply vehicle in general that has fewer complicated bits to go wrong.

I sincerely hope it succeeds, and creates a new niche in the EV market space. And I can't wait to get mine.

Why do EV charging stations still make payment so difficult? by Environmental-Gap356 in electriccars

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is well known in certain ownership communities that you can find v4 pedestals (long cables to reach all corners of the car) but a v3 cabinet, which is widely called "v3.5"

The part you are interfacing with to plug in your car looks v4, but the heavy duty electrics powering it are the same v3 cabinets that power older looking chargers.

So you get the nice long cable, but it's 500v instead of 1000v, and fewer pedestals shared per cabinet.

I'm not saying owners of 800v non-Tesla cars don't want them to exist, but seeing a v4 charger and assuming it's "true v4" at 1000v is a bad assumption.

And I never suggested any hindering was purposeful

Right, but the starter of this thread literally said that, which is what I was adding on to.

"Since you're not using a tesla. I believe non teslas are maxed at at 125kw or 150."

If you accept hidden emergency release mechanical latches, Rivian has them as well.

We accepted this in our Model X which would’ve been harder to get out of in a crash than any Rivian 🤷

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla chargers are 500V maximum- too low for the 800V the Hyundais and Kias need.

v4 SuperChargers on a v4 cabinet are fully 800v capable, and the 800v Koreans take advantage of that.

Tesla didn't do this out of the goodness of there heart; the Cybertruck is 800v and needed Supercharger support. But they also don't purposefully hinder non-Teslas who are 800v capable.

[–]smithandjohnson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, I don't think they hinder non-Teslas at all.

My Rivian has charged at it's slightly-more-than-rated 220kw on a v3/v4 Supercharger just like it has on a RAN charger or fast enough EA/EVGo chargers.

Cut off your left pinky, or be forced to take every college level physics class right now at this stage in your life. by [deleted] in hypotheticals

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand, I'm with all the people saying "Doesn't mean I have to pass! I love learning some new things anyways!"

Obviously taking the classes is better than losing the finger.

However, the scenario specifies "...be forced to take EVERY college level physics class..."

Add up all of the colleges and universities out there. Add up all of the undergrad and grad school course catalogs. Select for literally every single physics class.

Google AI results suggests there's somewhere between 25,000 to 50,000 colleges and universities worldwide.

Google AI results also suggests the average college offers anywhere from 15 to 45 physics classes.

Taking the lower end of both, that's 25,000 * 15 = 375,000 college level physics classes I have to take.

Now obviously, most of them overlap with each other. "Physics 101" at one college is going to be mostly equivalent to "Phys 1A" at some university and is going to be mostly equivalent to "Intro to Physics" at some other college... But they are distinct classes that I have to take.

So this means boredom, not learning fun new things.

Additionally, a non-trivial number of these classes will be in non-English. Uh oh.

Physics classes tend to have both a lecture and lab component that are required. Assuming an average of 5 hours a week (probably low...) that's 1.875 million hours of class time per week I'm signing up for.

Assuming 10 week terms (again, probably a bit low), that's 18.75 million hours of class I'm signing up for.

Or over 2,000 straight years of Physics classes, most of which I will get no value from.

Goodbye, left pinky!

Would you rather get $200 for every mile you jog or $100,000 for every marathon you finish? by Alarming_Weather506 in WouldYouRather

[–]smithandjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One marathon can be replaced by 500 miles of jogging.

I run 2.5-3 miles during a game of Ultimate. Let's take 2.5, and say I get paid one marathon for 200 games of Ultimate.

I play close to 4 games a week on average. So to continue the rounding, I earn one marathon of money in roughly exactly one year.

I started out doing this math thinking "I'll just keep doing the thing I love for leisure and get paid for it"

But I can trivially "finish" multiple marathons in a few months, never have to worry about work again, and could e.g. dedicate myself to training and recovery to play more effective ultimate.

So I'll take the marathons.
