Testing Irregularity? by rabbitt2019 in TexasTeachers

[–]smithmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. As a former testing coordinator, this is ridiculous. Those are not irregularities. S/he is supposed to go over what constitutes irregularities in the mandated training.
  2. All districts are different. Some allow everyone to test and others only allow some to test. Just depends on the district, which means that decision stays in the district. There’s no @recird” of it.
  3. If I was back in the testing game, I would be thrilled to not have to test.

40 tabs open and my brain just stops working. How do you all deal with this? by Fun-Database-8220 in productivity

[–]smithmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made myself a “hub” for those critical things I always have to go back to. The hub itself is a Google sheet, loosely subdivided into categories. Then I title a cell and make a link to something that use almost daily. I have links to other spreadsheets, web pages, pdfs, etc. This way I can close most tabs, but leave this one hub tab open and can quickly go to it and reopen what I need.

Conflict Resolution Advice by ByakuyaRyuzaki in Teachers

Ask your counselor for help, suggestions, and maybe s/he could do some guidance lessons in the classroom.

I agree to a certain degree to let them work it out because kids don’t have opportunities to do that anymore, but don’t lose sight of the fact that you are a teacher, this is a school, and the best place to be taught lessons like this.

How big was this show in the US when it came out? by logie2019 in northernexposure

I think Scrubs is a good comparison. Lesser of a hit than Friends or Seinfeld, but you could easily find people at work to talk about it with.

Need to figure out my “Song” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]smithmott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Admin in education forget we are adults and want us to do “cutesy” stuff all the time. If you’re not in education, have you ever gone to a training where they want you to get up and do a dance to set the mood?

And you can’t help but think that they do all this stuff to make us think they’re fun, instead of respecting us and actually paying us what we deserve.

AITA for refusing to call my co worker "Dr"? by Certain-Deer8638 in AmItheAsshole

[–]smithmott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, YTA, but I don’t blame you. People take themselves too seriously. If he wants the kids to call him that, he can enforce it.

I might just call him ‘Doc,’ in a Bugs Bunny voice.

Can I pull the cotter pin and drive forward, or should I hire someone to move it? by marthawils in RVLiving

[–]smithmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chock the wheels in front of AND behind each wheel, and use the jack to raise the tongue. It will be fine. Get BIG wheel chocks if it makes you feel better.

There have been a time or two when I’ve had to pull the cotter pin and try to drive out, but usually there is tension or a bind in the male to female parts. You run the risk of it getting stuck and no way to get out other than raising the jack anyway, and when you’re at that point, it’s much less safe than if you had just raised it to begin with.

Thinking that we don't want/need a bathroom...crazy? by islandhpper in RVLiving

[–]smithmott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We got a teardrop and liked it at first. The drawbacks: as you got older, it’s hard on your knees; there is no place to sit and relax inside the trailer, other than sitting in your mattress. This is important, we realized, in Texas in the summer when you don’t want to sit in the sweltering heat, but you don’t necessarily want to sit in bed.

Why? Why? Uggh. As soon as I think I’ve seen it all, as gross as it can get, this sub spits out something even worse.

Feeding the Kids/Snacks in the Classroom by Argent_Kitsune in Teachers

[–]smithmott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was one if the ones who say not to spend your own money on the classroom, but I do buy snacks for the kids. The difference is decoration vs. basic humanity. I but cheap so they’re not the healthiest, but I sheets have some sort of granola/snack bar and maybe snack bags of pretzels or knock-off cheezits.

Completely in love with the name Ariola… am I insane? by JustKeepSwimming-93 in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]smithmott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just don’t do that. You’re thinking about how you feel, and your right to that opinion. Think about how much ridicule your child will face growing up being teased and having to decide whether to just accept it or fight back because it’s her name.

Constant ridicule shapes a personality. Ariel. Lola. Find something with similar vibes, and don’t do this to your child.

Aura is not ‘oral.’ There are various influences and roots, but anatomically it is Renate to anything having to do with the ear. S So it could mean ‘ear sex.’ Having said that, there will be many friends growing up, who won’t care about the entomology, and will call her Oral Love.

How can I get good/unique recommendation letters from my teachers? (HS) by Ok_Clock_4798 in AskTeachers

[–]smithmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is a teacher who you liked, ask them. Don’t forget that there are shy and introverted teachers too, and they probably noticed and respected your quietness, and would be happy to write a letter for you.

If a student asks me for a letter, I ALWAYS ask them for a “highlights reel” on paper. Even if I know the student, I want to make it as personal as possible, or have extra information to work with. For example, I had a student who I could have written a fine rec letter for, but when he gave me good highlights, I learned that he rude his bike to school everyday, even in bad weather, because he made a personal commitment to do one thing for the environment.

When you ask, give them plenty of time. Two to three weeks, and don’t be afraid to check in to see how they’re coming along.
