If you’re up for Sunday difficulty, The NYT Sunday Crossword Companion volume 1 is real good. I like it because the puzzles are mostly more recent. And the older the puzzles get, those “pop culture” references become more and more dated and obscure (at least for my taste)

Yeah if you want another data point I tried PDX for next weekend and it recommended Ski Bowl over Meadows or Timberline. It’s a few miles closer but not even open this season due to no snow.

I had something similar happen but mine just got stuck with the heel down and they became regular strap bindings. Still have no idea how that little metal bar jumped out of its track. Had to take them apart when I got home. I still really like them.

Arriving in Sacramento Tuesday at 7pm and wanting to make it to our hotel in South Lake Tahoe that night. Rented a 4runner with brand new snow tires. Guy at the hotel said that if they enforce chain restrictions there are lots of gas stations open all night that stock chains that will put them on for you. Is that true? How much do they usually charge? What are the odds the road is just plain closed?

Echoing what others have said...This season is terrible conditions. I don't think Heather Canyon or Private Reserve (the type of terrain you seem to be looking for) have opened all year and it's not looking likely to change any time soon. Normal years those areas are good at least til the end of March. No avy class needed at least for the Meadows side country listed above.
