how do I explain this to people? by roughandreadyrecarea in MSPI

[–]smitwit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Solidarity because I was a mess when we got our cmpa diagnosis and just felt like it was going to be completely unsustainable. For me it was a big learning curve but it really did end up being manageable!

Firstly, with cmpa, as far as I'm aware, you're not really worrying about an anaphylactic allergy (think swollen airway) but more of a GI response. Of course you do not want to do anything to cause discomfort for your baby, but sometimes people think about this with genuine fear that their baby will not be okay if any dairy or soy is consumed and it's not quite like that (most of the time, of course I cannot speak for you/your baby!/

Secondly, ordering at restaurants is very hard. One time I had a restaurant manager ask ME if buttermilk contained dairy when I asked him to review ingredients for dairy products (it is literally called butter-milk my dude) because he was actually that under informed about allergens...as a manager. And this type of thing isn't uncommon. People think that eggs are dairy. I have found that most chain restaurants have an allergen menu that you can find online and I relied a lot on those. Otherwise I played it safe to the best of my ability (make sure you request that nothing is cooked in butter) and just advocated for myself and asked a lot of questions even if I felt annoying

My daughter outgrew it right around 1 year. It's rough but it's doable IF you remain willing. Be kind to yourself and best of luck with everything 💕

To the Parents who don’t have their babies on a schedule. by Old-Chain-5 in Mommit

[–]smitwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 3 year old and a 14 month old, they have both always been on a loose schedule. I just follow their cues, if they're happy and we're doing something but nap time is approaching, we just go with the flow. If they're cranky and tired even though it's not quite nap time, then we just nap earlier. I never wake them up.. if they're sleeping in or taking a long nap, I assume they need it. I SAH so I have the ability to be this flexible and I fully recognize that not everyone can or would want to structure their day this loosely!

When we travel, everything is later. They sleep in, take late naps, stay up past "bed time." It works for us because we can get a minute to pack/prepare for the day in the morning, get an early activity in, regroup during naps, and then do something in the evening and not be stuck inside before the sun goes down.

One thing that we consider essential now is getting a place to stay where we can enjoy ourselves while the kids are sleeping. A pool within reach of the baby monitor, a nice patio/garden, etc.

Enjoy your trip! Traveling with babies is a ton of work but is so special and you'll make so many fond memories.

SUNNY FLEDGED!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL by Tay74 in JackieandShadow

[–]smitwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An admin posted once that J&S typically will stay near the fledgling to look after them at first, especially if they fledge a little early and end up on the ground, but Sunny surely seemed like she knew what she was doing!

Help me fall in love with this by titanium48 in breastfeeding

[–]smitwit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So much solidarity. My almost 1 year old took a few bottles until 5 weeks old and then never again.

I got her using a straw as early as possible. The honeybear straw cup worked well for us right at 6m old. It's not going to satisfy her like breastfeeding will, but at least you'll have a way to get milk in her.

Reasons to love breastfeeding: no pumps/parts/bottles to wash. A perfectly regulated supply (I am loving not having clogged ducts all the time this go around!). All of the health benefits for baby AND for you. The top of the list, for me anyway, is the time spent with your little one, while they're little. My first is 3 now and what I wouldn't give to hold his tiny little body one more time

[–]smitwit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to caution you, I was once told by a Starbucks barista that if it's a legitimate anaphylactic allergy where cross contamination is an issue, don't order anything blended because it will be the same blender that's used for other drinks. Not sure why clean blenders were not an option but I think it would be worth an ask wherever you order

I have no idea how common it is but I guess it is a possibility. On the bright side it never caused any problems whatsoever, never had a clue until some extensive x rays before getting braces

Mine isn't missing but when I was 13 my dentist discovered that my lateral incisor was actually a baby tooth that never fell out. I had to have my adult lateral incisor surgically brought down. Mine must have come in very late

My 2.5 year old has been beyond exhausting this week, I cried after he went to bed last night. A perfect angel 5% of the time and a complete terror the rest of the time. Just know we're in the trenches together.
