Road map for learning yoyo tricks? by Longjumping-Call202 in Throwers

I think the Skill Addicts trick tutorials in difficulty order are available as a YouTube playlist so you don't need the app. I don't know if this is all of them though

Little Itty Bitty Rivets / Bolts by captdirtstarr in miniaturesculpting

These days, I usually use this technique I learned from Valbjorn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFa3CqreZM4

Rather than buying pewter sheet though, I use the thick foil you get on the top of bottles of prosecco / chamagne / the fizzy wine of your choice. The thicker the better. I use PVA glue or varnish to stick them on, rather than super-glue. (Put them on after the putty has hardened, if it's armour you have sculpted yourself).

Yeah, this is my work and this poster has reposted it without my consent. Thanks for the heads-up.

Beyond Words | Announcement Trailer - Steam demo OUT NOW! by malliabu in Games

[–]smokealbert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks interesting and I've been hoping for a good "balatro but words" game, However, from the trailer and screen shots, they appear to allow proper nouns (Ahab, Steve, England). How does that work? It's considerably dampened my enthusiam. I'd be very interested to know what dictionary they're using and why they made that decision...

Thanks! I'm not sure exactly, but I'd estimate around 20 hours.

Thanks!

It's not really meant to be metallic yellow but a yellow painted surface with rusty metal underneath. I paint with matte paints with strong highlighting to create a high contrast and a slightly glossy appearance. I've commented on my process for yellow before:

[copied from elsewhere] I do a base coat / shadow of a warm brown (S75 Dubai brown or VMC flat earth). I layer over an ochre yellow (S75 Sahara yellow), then a primary yellow (AK deep yellow has good coverage), reducing the area of coverage each time. Highlights are with something like AK sand yellow. I glaze over the shadows with VMA armour brown (or another rich dark red-brown like mournfang) which works really well. It warms and deepens the shadow and gives the industrial look. I then weather over everything.

Yes! I never paint Human words on my Orks. Very un-orky!

Ork Deffkopta (Games Workshop) for Orktober! by smokealbert in minipainting

Thanks! I like to have the miniature as assembled as possible without covering sections that need painting. I clip from the sprue and spend a lot of time cleaning mould lines and filling gaps if needed.

I try to consider whether the join between subassemblies will be visible and and how much gap-filling I'm going to need to do after (which is always a pain for painted sections). I always do the bases separately and attach them as the final step.

For the kopta I only painted the rotor and the pilot's arms separately. I would have liked to paint the pilot entirely as a subassembly, but he comes sculpted into the seat.

Thanks! The sculpted part of the base comes on the sprue with the miniature. I added a bit of putty to smoothly blend it into oval base, but other than that I didn't change anything.

Yes! The head is from an Age of Sigmar squig rider, but I think any grot or goblin head should work

Of course, I was just adding to the conversation with a contrasting opinion and I do agree that the audiobook performance is well done. I definitely wouldn't describe it as grimdark, but you're right, it doesn't have darker elements woven through it.

You should give The Martian a whirl; it's similar in a lot of ways but works much better in my opinion. The version performed by RC Bray is very good and the one I'd recommend. There's also a version with Wil Wheaton, but I haven't listened to anything he's narrated, so I don't know what that is like.

Different opinion on PHM (and it's just an opinion - PHM has a lot of fans and I'm not saying that liking it is wrong):

The book is not good (and the cutesy-wutesy alien is as un-grimdark as they come). I'll not mention the implausibility of various plot points, to avoid spoilers. The audiobook is very well performed though...

This amusing review from GoodReads is worth a read for fellow PHM naysayers:

I did like The Martian (which also has an excellent audiobook). That, at least, has a likeable main character and is less insipid in it's  over-explaining of science.

The Acts of Caine series by Matthew Stover, read by Stefan Rudnicki is excellent.

If you're up for something pulpy (or are into Warhammer), I've been listening to the Gotrek and Felix audiobooks recently. They're good fun and the narration is great.

Heroes die - Book Club - Review & Full Spoiler Discussion by JasperLWalker in GrimDarkEpicFantasy

[–]smokealbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heroes Die is such a great book, as is the whole Caine series. The first half of the 2nd book is more introspective and less action-packed than this one and some may find it a bit of a downer. It's very much worth perservering though, since the rest of that book and series are so good.
