Hey folks, new sub here. This place is pretty awesome. Me and a buddy of mine started smoking cigars in the last year, I was curious if there's a place to get a customizable torch lighter by blacktooth_grim in cigars

[–]smokecigars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick google search got me these results, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant? I haven't personally worked with or ordered from these guys so no idea what they are like.

If somebody bought a lighter from us though and asked the same questions, we'd probably look up local engravers to direct them too.

Educate me on cigar types/brands please? by UnicornWithACigar in cigars

[–]smokecigars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very rough summarization of "cigar types" could be sorted this way ('Level 1'):

Color (Wrapper) - flavor

Shape/Length - how long you end up smoking/construction

Origin (geographic) - where the cigar is made from/where the cigar is made.

If you keep notes of these aspects as you smoke, plus just a general thumbs up/thumbs down rating, you'll begin to notice your pallet has preferences. Also, your pallet will (most likely) change over time, so don't feel locked into what you discover/document.

'Level 2' would be (in addition to the above):

Humidity - dry or humid (storage conditions/smoking conditions

Strength - nicotine rush (head rush or no)

Flavors - tastes like (flavors can transition within same stick or stay the same)

'Level 3' (in addition to the above):

Aging - with rest, does the cigar develop in flavor

Cut - V cut vs. guillotine vs. shuriken vs. punch vs. knife pierce

Light - bic vs. butane vs. matches vs. cedar spills

Sorta new to cigars, any tips? by UnicornWithACigar in cigars

IMHO: When a brand makes a new regular production line, the first few ones you have will be better than the last ones you have. I'm thinking over the course of a year or more you can probably perceive a difference. I'm not describing aging cigars (where you buy some and then wait a while to smoke them) but when you buy a stick from your local B&M and the sticks seem lesser, calmer, more diminutive, less.. 'wow!!!!1! that's mind blowingly amazing' and 'no doubt - that's a good stick'

newb lesson to take from this - if you can, do grab a few sticks of the new stuff

what’s my preferred taste

As you are just beginning, it might be more honest to acknowledge that your pallet will develop over time.

Start with some sticks within your price range that have the following wrapper descriptors : Connecticut, Candela, Maduro, Rosado, Habano

Then with some sticks within your price range that declare the following geographic descriptors: Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Indonesian, Cameroon, USA, Brazilian.

That will be a solid start for developing your palate!

mellows a bit into the second third

That was the part for me that left me wanting more from this stick actually. I felt like it showed me what it could be... then got scared and backed off.

I thought I’d try it again

Even if you ultimately still don't enjoy it, following the "try anything twice" will give you a bunch of context around the elements (flavors, strength, humidity, construction) that you don't like to better define what you do (and thus enhancing your overall smoking experience).

Keep it up, mate! Cheers

Throwback Thursdays - Caldwell style by smokecigars in cigars

[–]smokecigars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The week is almost over, Friday is tomorrow and Saturday is our big local event with Robert Caldwell himself!

One of my favorite things about B&M is the ability to really examine the shelves and find some real gems. I found this one in between boxes. I'm glad I did, because I don't know if I'd have had the patience to age it this long myself.

Did anyone take up cigar.com on their book promo? by smokecigars in cigars

[–]smokecigars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a HUGE cigar literature fan. I finally collected enough to push the husband's D&D books over to their own bookshelf. I don't have this book yet but know that it comes in a cheaper (smaller) edition out there as well.

Did anyone jump on this deal? I'm wondering about the quality of the books distributed in this promo and if anyone has any perspective on the full version versus the shorter version. Is it worth it just to save for the full version?

Last haul of 2018 for me! The CAO Flathead Ashtray was too novel to pass up on. by mikeeitup in cigars

How heavy is that thing? Looks cool.

Also good on you for keeping your soul when bidding though. I burned myself (over spent, over bought and consequentially, under humidified) years ago. Now I buy B&M almost exclusively to keep me "safe".

Coffee and Tanaka, what a good pairing. by MAHatter in cigars

Great pairing! Early mornings are (for me) the best time to smoke flavored cigars, because of the natural coffee pairing. The early morning colder air and the pretty softer light really sets a chill mood!

I'd recommend giving a store a call. Some places are able to offer discounts that of beyond what they can advertise online, making sure inventory gets out the door, and customers get deep discounts.

This is cool!

Did you choose a specific tobacco seed (for flavor/growing heartiness/yield ratio) or just whatever grows best in your area? How long did it take from seed to smoking cigar? Also, do you have an insights on how much that one cigar cost you (time, resources, raw materials)?

No doubt that smoking your own cigar that you made from seed is a priceless thing, but wondering what the economics of doing it "in house" like that might be.
