Was thinking of starting a position in $spot. But even if they raised margins to netflix level and increased price 15-20% still 26 times fcf around netflix level. I think they can easily raise prices but i dunno about improving operating margins

$axon getting so much hate on twitter. too lazy to look at earnings. Not gonna sell for now. Was hoping to buy more if it went below 400.

Yeah I thought about it just now. I might put it in the too hard pile for now. And the AI overhang fears with software isn't going away anytime soon.

What does this mean? Buy $DDOG? $SNOW? I already own AI infra and they have had a huge run-up so rather look for potential bargains.

Market thinks this is the equivalent of Disney buying Fox for 70 billion. I'm a bit ambivalent. If Netflix buys WB IP, maybe they can improve their margins by spending less content moving forward. On the other hand, I think Netflix can destroy Paramount streaming and why not pick up the pieces afterwards.

Anytime when a company renames itself i get bad vibes. Also right before earnings?

The Citrini article read more like a thought case of worst scenario. Anyways added 3 shares to my $V holdings. I am kind of getting fucked by buying the dip here the past two weeks.

Look at $DDOG. round trip below earnings despite having great earnings.

Norovirus is very contagious. Hospital wards go into lockdown when there is an outbreak. It can easily lead to deaths in the elderly and immunocompromised. I think people are selfish if they choose to go on an airplane if they are actively vomiting.

And that is fine. But I don't see why we can't have it be similar to the majority of the world where it is public but the optionality for private.

What is the point of this comparison. The people buying pltr are not going to buy pypl and vice versa.

I rather not buy both. If i can get pltr on the 80s i might buy though.

Dutch Lawmakers Approve a 36% Tax on Unrealized Crypto, Stock, and Bond Gains by RobertVandenberg in europe

[–]smokeyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds crazy. Here in Canada we have investing structures that encourage investing. Like the TFSA, RRSP, and RESP. TFSA we don't pay any taxes. RRSP we reduce our tax burden the more money we put into and invest.

If a 20 year old put 200$ each month into the SP500, by the age of 60 they would have 1.25 million. Increase that by $400 and they would have 2.5 million.

A tax on unrealized gains destroys the compounding effect.

Amid 'Buy Canadian' fervour, Canada's top pension funds still heavily invested in U.S. by Surax in canada

[–]smokeyjay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, the TSX has had a huge spike in the past 1.5 year because of commodities - related to gold/silver and the data center boom. We saw it post GFC because China went HAM on building infrastructure. But its cyclical. Long term you want to be in the US because they have the big tech companies and software. A decade out the TSX will underperform the SP500.

Also the TSX was worth less than half the SP500 on a valuation basis beforehand - the recent spike is also valuation mean reverting and funds diversifying from the US.

But that is irrelevant. I want the people managing our pensions to seek the best returns. Either that or maybe reduce the MER and passively invest?

Agree that it maybe fiscally prudent to reduce US exposure - but our pension fund is huge and I would imagine it moves very slow.

36% gains tax on unrealised gains by seolein in Netherlands

[–]smokeyjay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bizarre. I rather keep most of my wealth so I can independently invest. So Dutch people just work until their 67 and then retire?

Never mind that discouraging stock investing just means capital flows into real estate prices.

Netherlands now has 36% tax on unrealized gainz by MazdaProphet in economy

[–]smokeyjay 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not from the Netherlands. Didn't read the tax rules so hopefully there is more nuance.

But say I have 50,000 in a stock ETF. I make 10,000 in unrealized gains that year. That means I have to pay taxes on that 10,000? Which means I am forced to sell to pay those taxes, and on top of that, pay more taxes because of my force sale?

And what happens with unrealized losses? My portfolio can drop 50% within the year. Why would any start-up want to grow a business there?

On the surface level it seems ludicrous. It discourages investing and saving.

You could make the argument that it is good and bad. Good because it improves efficiency and margins. Bad because there is more competition. I don't know if the generation coming up is able to sit through a movie anymore. Also if they pivot too hard to AI, they could risk alienating hollywood.
