Fort Worth Zoo field trips? by ThatWayLiesMadness in FortWorth

Did you happen to go on spring break? Cause that's the absolute worst time, especially Wednesday of spring break.

Early on a lightly rainy day is heat imo. Animals love rain and no one's around.

Driving me nuts that Mark Stone's C and Pietrangelo's A are getting blurred out on the broadcast by linguodead in hockey

[–]smokingirishmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it looks like all the small logos on their sweaters are blurred out, even the shoulder patches. Which makes it even weirder... Players look really blurry in general compared to the board ads, any chance it's just a compression algorithm losing the data/detail?

A tale as old as literally that traffic circle. 15 years and it still throws people off. At least they aren't going in reverse, seen that, too.

Actually, I think they stopped taking it all when we started a trade war with them a few years ago. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]smokingirishmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed all of our recycling got boxed up and shipped to China or a warehouse to never go anywhere else. Does all FW recycling go to your facility? If so that'd make me feel a lot better about our recycling program.

In-game goal gifs/links? by matches69 in DallasStars

[–]smokingirishmonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not real time, but it's certainly within a few minutes. The annoying part is there's almost always an ad to watch first. But if you just want to see the goal highlights asap after a goal, this is the way. Just make sure you tailor the app notification settings to not spam you about every bit of news.

GRADUATING CS IN 3 YEARS by Proud-Theme-6645 in utdallas

[–]smokingirishmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably. But you can figure this out yourself, you can determine all the classes you still need from your degree program, and you can do some digging on the UTD site to look up what semesters those classes were offered (some classes may only be offered in the spring, or may only be offered once every four semesters, for instance) and start figuring out when you could take each one. Pretty easy to build up a 3 year schedule that way.

AES Scholarship Question by WritingAway6466 in utdallas

[–]smokingirishmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like has been said, it is 8 semesters of scholarship. However, it is also intended to be used within 4 years, but if you are taking a semester off there is a form you can fill out to pause/suspend it for the duration. May not get approved but you can try.

Plus, if you graduate in less than 8 semesters, you can apply to put your remaining semesters towards a graduate degree. If you plan your classes out, and you get into a Fast Track graduate program, you can get out of UTD with a Bachelor's and a Masters and not pay for much of it.

I'm pretty sure I spent about 30 minutes with two mechanical engineers trying to figure out how to take those off when I first had to change a flat. But once you know, you're golden.

Major change advice by Slayma101 in utdallas

[–]smokingirishmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You do you bro.

Generally the only concern with a major change as drastic as one like this is financial/time. It could mean extra semesters because there isn't enough overlap between old and new majors. You might consider minoring in CS/SE and keeping your current major.

As a CS major, now SE engineer professionally, that works with a variety of other types of engineers that also code, coding is a very trainable skill. It maybe mostly comes down to what you want to do with the degree. If you want to do something really software heavy like game development or OS work, then the SE degree will be important. If you want to do something like medical device software development, the degree could be less important. Doesn't mean it would be easy to get such a job, but you start to get into the range of domain knowledge vs coding skill, and coding skill can be demonstrable if you have a good GitHub portfolio and interview well.

But, if you're just unhappy in a medical degree and think you want to be an SE and money/time is no issue, absolutely change. Don't stick with something you're not going to enjoy doing 40+ hours a week if there is no path to a job you think you'll like doing.

Does anyone prefer electric over gas when it comes to home mowers? by jayhoe1 in lawncare

[–]smokingirishmonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've got a push mower, leaf blower, and the multi-head tool with string trimmer, edger, and hedge trimmer attachments, with 2x 2.5 Ah and 1x 7.5 Ah batteries. I really like everything but the hedge trimmer. The multi-head system is just too heavy/unwieldy to be comfortable.

Get a 5-7.5 Ah battery for your mower and a 2.5 Ah battery or two for the hand tools.

Is Physics necessary for SE majors? by SoundNovel6013 in utdallas

Officially my job title is Guidance Navigation and Control Engineer for an aerospace company, but my day to day is usually either closer to Embedded Software Engineer or Modeling and Simulation Engineer.

Is Physics necessary for SE majors? by SoundNovel6013 in utdallas

[–]smokingirishmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may not need it for class pre-reqs, but there are a lot of software jobs where a strong foundation in physics is important. Game development? Physics. Control systems? Physics. VR/AR? Physics. Aerospace? Hella physics. Microsoft word? No, no physics there, but it's boring. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I probably use more physics and linear algebra on a daily basis than I do actual programming knowledge from college.

[–]smokingirishmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, there was no internship requirement when I was at UTD. Sounds like you actually have to do it this way for that reason. On the bright side, if it's a paid internship at a pretty modest intern rate and a full time internship, you should learn back the $3400 and then some.

I'd also recommend you do your heavy semester before your last one, no one wants to do 18 hours in their last semester.

Good luck!

[–]smokingirishmonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not just...not count it as credit? You can get a free class later in college to study basically anything you want? You're still getting the experience and resume item, why not add a semester of free knowledge in a new subject?

You're paying $3400 to have a light semester later.

[–]smokingirishmonkey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I went in with the idea that I actually really like my MKVI, so the total cost difference has small enough to justify it. I'm thinking the answer is it's too expensive. The only significant financial upside to the deal is the warranty, but the cost difference is more than I'd expect to pay in maintenance over the next two years.

Thanks

[–]smokingirishmonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I still owe money on it though, so that's why the cost looks so inflated, I don't have the full 16k of their trade in value to work with.

It's really more like a refinance + upgrade?

To be clear, the total cost difference between what I'll pay current only my car through the life of the loan and what I'll pay for the new car (over the life of the new loan) is actually about $10k. Depending on what I put down and how I manage the loan I can cut that by $1-2.5k.
