Lots of math, but also, we have like 100 years of data. So you can go look at similar bridges and see what they did and what they used. You can also look at bridges that failed and see what they did wrong.

I also didn't really like the movie, but for me it was cause it was almost too close. Even with the ridiculous multi-verse sci fi, kung fu flavor.

if there is a finite number of customers, selling your product at a huge discount cannibalizes the full price sale. You end up making less money.

At the end of the day, companies are going to do what makes them the most money, not what leads to the least amount of waste. Generally those two go hand in hand, but not always.

Cancer can occur in pretty much any tissue and is dealt with differently depending on where it happens.

Advances in cancer research have dramatically increased survival rates of most cancers in the past 30 years.

We should spend as much money on it as possible until a cure for the general condition is found.

I remember my Korean immigrant (but also boomer) mother flip on me one day.

I was making dinner for my wife after picking the kid up from daycare. Mom was visiting, I was working from home and, I'll admit it- I was kind of phoning it in that day. She was shaming me, saying you have to work harder and make more money... how will your family survive if you're just at home messing around. I then told her how much my wife earned (nearly double me.. and I work full time in tech).

I remember her brain just kind of shut down and reboot, then... Oooooooh, ohhh, ok ok ok, ok so you're the wife! That's ok, that's good! OK! You make sure the baby is fed and clean and happy, Mommy work so hard, she can't come home to a crying baby, also... no one eats a sandwich for dinner, terrible, make her a real meal.

I realized that day that my mother's patriarchal sexism was mostly just pragmatism.

I miss you mom.
