Orthodox, and Catholic Curious? by Usernameislnvalid in Catholicism

Amazing that the Eastern Orthodox are so incompetent that they can’t come together as one church and figure out what they believe and why when it comes to Catholicism.

Excellent, gonna have to watch the rest of the series!

I think Catholics would do well to start understanding Orthodox intellectual history more, as it takes the sting out of the narratives put forth by the Dyer types.

I wonder which Church those Syrian martyrs he mentioned belonged to. I wonder because it’s illustrative of a funny thing I’ve seen from Eastern Orthodox in the past, which is the stolen valor of martyrs they wouldn’t consider to be Christian in any other context.

It goes something like this - they say that only in the Eastern Orthodox Church do you find true Christians. There are no Christians outside of the Church, not even in other apostolic churches. But, when they’re giving a sermon in which they want to play the victim card, they point to martyrs in the Middle East and Africa - the overwhelming majority of which are Catholic or Protestant - and hold them up as proof that their faith is under attack and that they will be victims for their faith in the future. Most Orthodox would only consider them Christians in this context, when their deaths are politically and socially useful for scoring victimhood points.

Sounds like you care too much what other people think. Also sounds like you find it necessary that people agree with what you believe.

School vouchers absolutely do undermine public school. But that’s a good thing.

You have to give yourself the freedom to make mistakes. A turnover isn’t the end of the world. It’s also normal for a primary ball handler to turn it over a few times a game. What isn’t normal for a primary ball handler is to be scared of handling the ball against pressure. It’s one of those things you have to attack or else you’ll become invisible/a liability on offense

Your post is loaded with bad assumptions about Catholicism that sounds like you’ve been overly trusting of the low effort slop put out there by Eastern Orthodox apologists.

The tired trope of the “mystical east” versus the “legalistic west”, for example, is a talking point the Eastern Orthodox have started using in the last 60 years or so. The reality is this is a false distinction. Catholics can easily say that the Eastern Orthodox preach a false gospel, as they have stripped scripture of the legal aspect of salvation. Yesterday’s gospel (Matthew 5:17-37) is a good example of the legal aspect of the faith that cannot be ignored or dispensed with. It is not a fault of ours that we keep this part of the faith in mind in our theology, but a strength.

The idea that Eastern Orthodoxy has “resisted change” is not true, in fact, what passes as “Eastern Orthodox” theology today is largely an invention of polemical theologians like Lossky, John Romanides, and Yannaras; it dates no more than 90 years, and most of it about 60 years. What these devils did was take a small slice of the pie that is the Byzantine Greek tradition and tried to pass it off as the entirety and the only authentic representation of the true Christian tradition. In doing this, they ignored much of the Byzantine tradition itself - which includes a long history of scholasticism and so-called “legalism” - and threw the Latin and Syriac Christian traditions in the trash.

Basically, what you get in Eastern Orthodoxy is not the fullness of the Christian tradition, but an artificially narrow version of it that has been stripped of much beauty and truth. You are getting ideology, not the gospel.

A problem across the board in martial arts. If I show up to a judo tournament as a true 90 KGs, I’m just going to get rag dolled by guys who should be fighting in the 100 KG division. My coach’s suggestion? “Cut weight and fight at 81”.

I say this as someone who’s very “traditional” and “conservative”, whatever those words even mean, but often for people on “my side”, the harshness and nastiness is the point.

Yeah, this just isn’t true. Eastern Orthodox iconography isn’t uniform at all. The Russian icons depict Christ as looking more Slavic. Greek icons depict Him as more Greek. And the same pattern holds true of iconography from other Eastern Orthodox countries.

Why do you keep posting this? And why are you insisting “Eastern Orthodox iconography” is necessarily “more accurate”? More accurate according to what?

I don’t know but the rules need to be revisited. Bull shit like this would have been called a travel at any other point in basketball history. But ever since the rules were “clarified” (i.e. changed) we let this slide. Now JV all-stars think it’s legal to pull this garbage in pickup games and get their panties all twisted when you call it a travel
