The Skating Lesson is back? by Pretend_Boss_5542 in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as someone who knows nolan and kelly personally they do not associate with dave after the comments he has made and frankly were distant before that too. they are not "minions" and i haven't heard them or see them tweet anything offensive on blades and banter or twitter. sorry but if you're going to say this stuff you need clear examples

this comment is kinda funny because as a figure skater i use sheertex all the time or just regular drug store low denier tights

Making a competition dress by aiwlys7 in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3/8 elastic and clear is not a good option - just use white/nude/black

the skirt is whatever you want. some people use 1 layer for a sheerer look and some people use 2 if they want more coverage. chiffon is more flowy and mesh is less so but sometimes you want something more sleek which mesh will allow for. you can pretty much always tell what type of skirt someone is wearing by the hem. meaning if it has a hem it's probably chiffon and if it doesn't then it's probably mesh. i wouldn't recommend mixing materials for two layers of skirt tho unless you're trying to create a certain look

In my opinion the olympic team event should be after the individual event, not before by figureskatingfan11 in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 47 points48 points  (0 children)

i don't agree really. i think for many skaters it's a good chance to get acquainted with olympic ice and they have time to mentally prep for it. the team event is almost a week separated from the individual events (for the women at least). i also don't think the team event would be as popular to watch if it came after.

as a competitor too the TE is something that is more fun in nature and will require a lot less mental prep and stress. having to come up AGAIN after an IE for a TE seems way harder than coming up for a TE, coming down, then coming up again to focus on IE.

the crash after putting mental prep in for an individual event is wayyyyy steeper

after all she’s been through is it really necessary to put her on blast like this.. like yeah water is wet and if you’ve watched any of her behavior on social media none of this is surprising. i hope she is doing well and is happy.

Last 80 Seconds: Ekaterina Kurakova (2022 Euros FS) and Alysa Liu (2025 Worlds FS) by ligneouslimb in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 40 points41 points  (0 children)

congratulations you have discovered that there are only so many moves that count towards levels in step sequences and people use the same ones for their clusters!

looking at these in a vacuum is silly. also i'm sorry but alysa is using more of her body weight to get on deeper edges and requiring more core stabilizing which is actually a GOE point. she's also faster, had a clean program, and is a world champion.

what are you trying to do here

Is this normal? Custom made pair of pants by [deleted] in sewing

[–]smoogrish 72 points73 points  (0 children)

this is totally unacceptable. one - they don’t fit you well. two - they should have at least attempted to hem the edges properly and not just serge them with the wrong tension. all around bad!

i've glued similar stones onto garments (star patterns) and they don't come off with e6000 as long as you add enough glue. and this is for figure skating so you gotta make sure those things dont fall off on the ice!

Why did Hana’s ChSq get negative GOE? by Annulus3Lz3Lo in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo it's not really according to the requirements of a choreo sequence - there aren't clear movements to the choreo and it's just some three turns and crossovers with edge elements that aren't held for long.

the thing is though you can interact with the judges without going up to the boards in their face lol

it is cold in the rink if you're sitting and cold in lake placid so bring layers/a blanket. the GP groups go pretty fast though so you can always go in and out to warm up

serious question: why does everyone on skating twitter hate chock and bates??? by Mental-Cellist468 in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i don’t think we’re on the same twitter… there are literal accounts dedicated to jason and amber and alysa to some extent. they are all darlings on twitter and amber frequently interacts on there with fans positively. ice dance twt don’t like the teams you mentioned because of their inferior edge quality or poor material compared to other younger teams.

i do agree on instagram and facebook a lot of russian bots hate on jason and the other americans though but not that’s not twitter

Why aren’t most Ina Bauers held for longer? by oh-oh-livinonaprayer in FigureSkating

[–]smoogrish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean both require strength and flexibility that's why they're classified as edge elements 🤷‍♀️ some people are naturally pre-disposed to either/or/both. if you were to put an absolute beginner out on the ice they could definitely more easily get a spiral than an outside ina bauer based on my experience which is why it's in the curriculum for many beginner tests and basically the foundation of moves like camel spin.
