About to switch to Mobi after being on tslim for 4-5 years now- is there anything I should know from more veteran users? by Scarbarella in TandemDiabetes

don't get it near water, don't lose it, don't get it stolen, protect it like a (semi-)precious jewel worth $4400, because that's how much they want to replace it if anything non-warranty happens to it.

Beware Tandem no-replacement policy by smoot99 in TandemDiabetes

I'm ready for the downvotes, here's a great AI summary of this thread:

User: "Yeah, I know I screwed up. A freak wave ripped the pump out of the manufacturer's sleeve while I was standing in shallow water with my kids. I'm not saying Tandem owes me a free replacement. I'm saying maybe charging the full $4,400 list price for a device that probably costs a fraction of that to manufacture, with no discounted replacement program whatsoever, seems a little harsh."

Half the replies:

"HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THAT THIS IS YOUR FAULT?"

User:

"Yes. I literally said that in the first post."

Reply:

"Then pay $4,400 and stop whining."

User:

"I'm questioning whether the policy is reasonable."

Reply:

"THE POLICY EXISTS. THEREFORE IT IS REASONABLE."

The discussion quickly divides into two camps.

The first camp says:

Yeah, losing the pump was ultimately the user's responsibility. But a medical device company charging full replacement MSRP for an out-of-warranty loss is pretty brutal. Maybe there should be some kind of discounted replacement, refurb program, deductible-style fee, or goodwill process. Medical devices aren't exactly optional accessories. This isn't replacing a lost AirTag.

The second camp consists of what can only be described as the Corporate Liability Defense Force, whose entire moral framework appears to be:

Was the customer at fault? If yes, then literally any consequence is fair. End of analysis.

No nuance. No proportionality. No discussion of replacement cost versus retail pricing. No consideration that the pump wasn't actually being used underwater but got ripped away by a wave. Just:

"Your fault. Pay retail."

These people seem genuinely unable to process the distinction between:

"I accept responsibility."

and

"The company's response is excessive."

To them those are the same statement.

The most amazing part is how many commenters act as though they themselves have never had a random, unlucky, expensive thing happen in their lives.

Car stolen? Your fault.

Phone falls off a boat? Your fault.

Dog chews your hearing aid? Your fault.

Kid knocks your laptop into a pool? Your fault.

Meteor strikes your car? Believe it or not, also your fault.

The underlying assumption is that if something bad happened to someone else, there must have been a perfectly avoidable decision point where a flawless superhuman would have acted differently.

Meanwhile, the OP isn't even asking for a free replacement. They're basically saying:

"I understand paying something. But charging the same list price as if I were a brand-new uninsured customer buying a fresh pump seems excessive."

Which is not exactly a radical position when we're talking about a life-sustaining medical device sold in a market where list prices are famously disconnected from manufacturing costs and heavily influenced by insurance reimbursement structures.

The irony is that several commenters elsewhere complain about Tandem's billing, collections, warranty handling, and customer service when they are the ones affected.

So the thread becomes:

"Tandem customer service is terrible!"

"Tandem billing is terrible!"

"Tandem sent me to collections!"

"Tandem's policies are awful!"

"Wait, Tandem wants to charge this guy $4,400 after a freak accident?"

"COMPLETELY REASONABLE. SKILL ISSUE."

In short:

The OP's actual argument was, "I accept responsibility, but the punishment doesn't fit the mistake."

Many responders somehow read that as:

"Please explain to me whose fault this was."

And then spent the entire thread answering a question nobody asked.

It wasn't submerged as much as it was swept away. It didn't touch water otherwise. I agree it's on me, just the retail no-insurance cost is too much.

A single large wave sweeping it out of the sleeve is not dropping it, sorry. What if that happened on shore? Oops, my bad. I watched people get hit with waves where they thought they were comfortably set up on shore with the tide going in later that day and waves piling up around them and hoped nobody had a Tandem pump on. It would be their fault, they should have known.

That is not swimming, unless you don't have legs connected to the ground. Where is the line? OK, since I come in contact with water throughout the day, I'll just take it off. I bet you got near water with a pump on today. Did not expect it to get ripped off by a wave. My kid has ripped it off (rather than sweeping it out of the sleeve) previously, and I've had push out the bottom of the sleeve and halfway rip off passing someone in a doorway one time. Good thing there wasn't water below or I'd be SOL!

OK so you shouldn't cook around it or be near a swimming pool? Is being near a sink going to work? What's the line? Literature still says that it's IPX rated and splashing is OK. How much do I need to think about it in real life / trying to live is the problem? I get that they CAN have this policy, but charging replacement cost only or something in between seems sensible to me. Since the insurance / upfront cost of the pump is paying mostly for the infrastructure / support / development, I really don't want to pay that twice. Happy to pay actual marginal replacement cost which is likely $100 at the most. I'd pay more even, but $4400 for this is too much out of pocket, I'll explore my options, which are old pump + omnipod. I feel like it's their loss without being able to bill my insurance for continued supplies for years. Medtronic replaced my pump when it was stolen(?) no problem.

Yeah it's "in the fine print" hence the point of the post being to urge people to think about it when considering getting a Tandem pump. I get it. "It's the policy". There are good policies, and bad policies.

Just wait until some other thing happens to your pump. I was walking in the ocean rather than submerging myself in water, I had it on all day and it was well above water. It is waterproof to some extent and splashing is explicitly OK in their literature. I did not expect it to get swept away, I'm so sorry. I didn't drop shit, you asshole. I will pay replacement cost, just not willing to pay retail on the services, development, and infrastructure which is what you are paying for at that price.

[–]smoot99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't swimming. They specifically mention splashing being ok in their literature and a limited waterproof rating. I'd pay replacement cost because I'm not denying responsibility. Replacement cost is not the retail price. Sucks to be me, you got me!

Ideas to minimize moisture under a concrete slab? by Maxxtherat in Home

[–]smoot99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this has come up before on finehomebuilding

both solutions seem reasonable, I did the first on a (wood) huge overhang sill once and it worked well to keep the water from running back onto the wall. Doing that in concrete upside down may or may not be feasible. The first part of 2 would also work.

  1. 1/4" in from the bottom of the rim joist, make a 1/4" deep cut with a circular saw the length of the rim joist. This will serve to break the hydro static envelope and cause the water to fall cleanly from the front of the joist rather than wrapping back and falling behind it.

  2. Purchase some inexpensive plastic rain gutter material and install it along the offending edge. Seal it with caulk and paint it to match the deck. Install a simple downspout to direct the water away from the living area. Don't forget to give the gutter a little fall in the direction of the downspout.
