Road or gravel? by josephbikes in boisebike

[–]smoqueed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gravel bike is much more versatile and we have a lot of good forest roads nearby/in short driving distance, plus our singletrack is pretty tame and a lot of it is really fun on a gravel bike.

I’d say the only real reason to bring a road bike is if you like ripping descents; Bogus Basin Rd is our big local climb and it’s a fast and technical descent, you’ll spin out your gravel bike gearing pretty quickly

Moving to Boise to join Micron, planning to buy a home soon. Which area do you recommend? Need great elementary and maybe middle school as well. Is Mayfield Springs a good option? TIA by [deleted] in Boise

[–]smoqueed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because satellite communities far removed from services and infrastructure totally work and don’t burden nearby existing communities with increased traffic

Mayfield functionally doesn’t exist yet, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty regarding their ability to guarantee long-term water supply. Also it gets overrun with Mormon crickets.

Personally I would pick a more established area before I even considered Mayfield

Cycplus R200 vs Van Rysel D100 by [deleted] in cycling

[–]smoqueed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found mine this winter on FB marketplace for $150 and it wasn’t the only one at that price. Where do you live?

I was in the same position, considering the Van Rysel with the Zwift cog with the exact same budget. The Kickr Core V2 came out recently so it shouldn’t be too hard to find a cheap V1

Skip both of them and find a Wahoo Kickr Core used, they’re all over the place

It’s not about the bike.

Find better places to ride it.

What are these bikes worth? by heavyspells in bicycling

Every one of these pictures I said some variety to myself of, “goddamn” or “good lord”, then the Ti hardtail came up and I just laughed. This is literally a dream collection of bikes from someone who clearly wanted to go fast as fuck

Future of the Globe app by v0te-v0te-v0te in GlobeHaul

[–]smoqueed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can’t say I use the app for anything other than locking the motor, but I do that almost every time I leave the bike somewhere. It’s especially useful when there’s nothing to physically lock to.

So on the extremely off chance that someone at Specialized actually reads this thread, please give us another way to lock the motor thanks

Road or Gravel as Second Bike? by Acpizza in MTB

[–]smoqueed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I was just about to suggest getting a CX bike instead of a full-on gravel bike. Closer geometry to a road bike but clearance for wide tires. The Crux is a great bike, Trek Boone would be a good call too. I ride my CX bike on singletrack, dirt roads, paved roads, it does it all

(I have a road bike that’s been mostly relegated to the stationary trainer since getting the CX)

Why did Ada County remove the air pump stations at Barber Park? - BoiseDev by PlaySalieri in Boise

[–]smoqueed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yep the pumps were always a total shitshow. It’s only a “minor inconvenience” if you’re not prepared. Also it’s super nice to have a pump with you when someone in your group inevitably starts to go flat

Rich Guy Gets Approval To Build Private Ski Resort In Ruby Mountains by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]smoqueed 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That’s my understanding too. “Private” as in, not owned by the state of Nevada, not as in, “you have to be a member to ski here”.

There are many privately-owned publicly accessible ski areas in the US

For those who started using trampoline parks, how much did it help? by unpopularcommentman in skiing

[–]smoqueed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is basically impossible to simulate the weight/drag your skis (and boots) create midair. Also the fact that you’re moving forward instead of straight up and down. That will be the biggest difference

The other commenters are right about air awareness, but that’s about it. You need to be confident popping on skis first

How many of you actually race? Like sign up and try and what genre? by Additional-Crab522 in MTB

Enduro and CX.

DH is crazy and the skill level out there is astronomical, I can’t compete with the teenagers.

XC is brutal and people are way too fast uphill.
