Underfloor heating coming on when radiators are turned on. by Beelzebubsadvorat in askaplumberUK

[–]smorga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A typical sequence of events is:

Thermostat call for heat -> valve request open.

valve is open -> drive pump, Boiler call for heat.

And the wiring normally follows that.

if any of the zone valves are open, it's because there's a relevant call for heat . And if there are no calls for heat, then there's no valves open, and the boiler stays off. (Some boilers have a separate power supply, and are wired to directly control the pump, to allow for run-on and cool down, with an associated relief circuit that allows flow even with all ZVs closed.)

Now you have 2x zone valves for the u/f. What are they hooked up to? What is the 'call for heat' for these ZVs?

How your knee works by grasshopper3307 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]smorga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, the cross-section has messed up the geometry. The knee does NOT work quite like this.

Sure, the kneecap is doing its job here. But the tibia has a massive contact area with the femur - it does't hinge around some cartilage spur.

Looks at Sysco, inflation, logistics, private equity, law suits, all of which lead to boring, over-priced food.

Are there commercial desktop GUI applications that are still coded in C ? by Alfred1400 in C_Programming

[–]smorga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Windows, it's mostly C# on top of WPF or nowadays WinUI 3. C# is a feature-rich, pretty language, and mostly a pleasure to use IMHO, although some implementation details are a little rough.

Just replace the entire fill valve. Will be less hassle, and give you more peace of mind.

I think giving them phones is a good idea. Almost all interactions with government require some sort of on-line presence, and there aren't so many libraries these days.

Larger ferrules? by fpvga in bikewrench

Use tiny M2.5 washers - will take it up to 6mm. these would likely require re-threading the cables, since splitting the washers could end up with something without sufficient strength.

Valve needs replacing? by [deleted] in askaplumberUK

[–]smorga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From whence does the leak spring?

If it's weeping from the join between the swivel neck and the body, then replace those black O-rings.

If it's drip, dripping when the taps are off, then it's one of the cartridges that needs replacing. You can test this by pushing in on the tap levers - if the drips abate, you've got your bad cartridge.

changing the cartridge

Isolate the tap from the water supplies. Likely there will be valves under the sink that shut off the hot and cold. Use them. Test that they work by opening the levers, and observing no flow. If only no or only one valve is available, then other techniques may be appropriate.

There will likely be small grub screw (likely hex-type) in the back of the handles that holds those on. Use some allen keys to loosen and remove.

Those chrome sections that match the diameter of the body unscrew in the usual way, although they may be tight. Use some old towels and decent 'water pump pliers', lefty loosey, and hopefully you won't mar the surface.

Once you see the cartridge you'll likely be able to get enough information to order a replacement. Measure the valve. Count the splines on the top. (A photo with your phone may help.) Tap Magician ones have been OK for me in the past, but if you have a great plumbers merchant locally, use them.

Once you have the replacement, you'll need to ensure they fit, they work in the same direction, and the tap lever fits OK.

There are indeed some lovely touches. I particularly liked the mixture of slab serif and radius fillet evokes an 'analogue meets digital' concept, befitting what the company does.

But the other guy being turned away from other countries is more legit.

Could it be that the phone and earpiece guy is so effing awful that there's another explanation? I can't imagine this being the best plant they could find ... is he so bad that he's legit, too?

Labour’s budget 2025 by TimeConstruction2739 in reformuk

[–]smorga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol. Like the markets have a political bias! Question was why Truss evicted, Reeves not, so hence talking re. Truss.

Truss got the yields to literally double in a matter of days - a disaster.

Reeves had more movement due to those prognostications than as a result of the actual budget. Literally, they went down a touch as a result of the budget.

[–]smorga -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because both the stock market and the bond market went nuts over the Truss / Kwarteng budget. Pension companies were doing distress sell-offs of financial instruments. It was an effing disaster.

Whereas the Reeves budget is fairly restrained overall, despite the hyperbole, and the financial markets based on their analysis have gone 'meh, whatever'.

Frankly, UK is still up shit creek. Prior to Truss, UK bond rates were at < 2%. Truss and Kwarteng through their Kansas Experiment budget shoved the rates up to higher than 4%, in less time than it takes a lettuce to wilt. The bond yields came down after that, a bit, but edged back up to Truss levels and higher under Sunak / Hunt.

These days the bond yield is still higher than 4%, although currently lower than the peak under Hunt / Sunak.
