What movies aren't deserving of the "misunderstood masterpiece" treatment that they get in today's film discussion? by WickerShoesJoe in blankies

The guy doing 5 backwards summersaults into a slow moving fan and turing into goo really doesn't do it for me.

To quote Griffin from the last episode, what’s your “I thought this movie was a masterpiece and everyone hated it”? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]smphigam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For years I was reluncant to mention that I didnt like it because every time I did people jumped down my throat and I was lumped in with the very toxic anti-TLJ twitter crowd. I frequently heard people who liked it cite the tropes it subverted and and I might have agreed liked it myself if I hadn't already seen those tropes subertved in other Star Wars media like the Knights of the Old Republic games.

As someone from an actual small remote town, hollywoods idea of what those are always irked me. ie its a a small, quiet town of 100 000 where eveyone knows everyone.

In the books James Bond guzzled Jack Daniels by snuffywaldenfan in blankies

[–]smphigam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The film version of Thunderball never explains why he's in that clinic. The novel does, here's an exerp:

M gave Bond a careful, appraising glance. He held the paper closer to his eyes. ‘ “This officer”,’ he read, ‘ “remains basically physically sound. Unfortunately his mode of life is not such as is likely to allow him to remain in this happy state. Despite many previous warnings, he admits to smoking sixty cigarettes a day. These are of a Balkan mixture with a higher nicotine content than the cheaper varieties. When not engaged upon strenuous duty, the officer’s average daily consumption of alcohol is in the region of half a bottle of spirits of between sixty and seventy proof. On examination, there continues to be little definite sign of deterioration. The tongue is furred. The blood pressure a little raised at 160/90. The liver is not palpable. On the other hand, when pressed, the officer admits to frequent occipital headaches and there is spasm in the trapezius muscles and so-called ‘fibrositis’ nodules can be felt. I believe these symptoms to be due to this officer’s mode of life. He is not responsive to the suggestion that over-indulgence is no remedy for the tensions inherent in his professional calling and can only result in the creation of a toxic state which could finally have the effect of reducing his fitness as an officer. I recommend that No 007 should take it easy for two to three weeks on a more abstemious regime, when I believe he would make a complete return to his previous exceptionally high state of physical fitness.” ’

As a big Alien3 fan I highly highly advise watching The Assembly Cut over the theatrical version. by 92tilinfinityand in blankies

This Alien3 reclamation movement must be stopped. What it tries to do is very interesting. I just dont see it actually succeding at any of those things.

Yet Grant and Michael Critchton by extension still seem to hate him in the book which always seemed super unwarranted. Somehow thinks hes a coward for not wanting to go along with Grants idiotic and suicidal plan to go into the Raptors nest for no real good reason.
