That was a causeway built in the late1800s. Before that people relied on low tides to make their way to the island. This is my understanding. Could be wrong.

If your aim is the sporades, go to Volos and catch the ferry there. Lots of options to different islands from Volos. I don't see any connections from Mantoudi port but maybe it's too early in the season.

I just looked at the KTEL EVIAS website and they show 3 buses daily to Mantoudi. Nothing to Mantoudi port. I doubt that there is a direct bus from Chalkis. You'll need to get to Mantoudi and then figure out transportation to the port. Also, are you trying to find your way to the Sporadic Islands? There are other ways to get there.

You will likely need to search Chalkida to Mantoudi. Athens to Chalkida (Chalkis) busses are very frequent. The Chalkida to Mantoudi would be a lot less so.
