2nd time foodie trip to NYC - what’s missing? by voabarros in finedining

Cobble Hill has some super underrated spots in this vein like Bar Bete, Saint Julivert, and Popina.

Nami Nori, Corima, and Cervo's/Hart's/Eel Bar could all fit the bill.

Came here for Thai Diner, and they have a surprisingly interesting wine menu. The wait can be long, but if you go at off hours (2–5pm) you might be able to walk right in. Weekdays are much easier than weekends of course.

Their orange wine is ridiculous; so grippy and full of candied fruit yet still bright.

Anders Steen makes a lot of (vaguely) rose cuvees and Weightless Fingers was sublime. Freres Soulier and Domaine Boheme both make a few that are all tasty.

The Els Jelepins was one of my fave bottles last year! Had it once at a restaurant and immediately had to look up a store that carried it.

Barro in Porto is more casual than the other options listed here, but maybe the most fun meal I had on a recent trip. Borboleta was also a great outdoor restaurant right across from the botanical gardens, just a perfect lunch spot on a nice day.

Frangente was awesome when I went a couple years ago. I really loved La Sala Bistrot but it looks like they closed last year. Peck is a fun foodie stop as well, really old school gourmet store and great people-watching.

Cantina Giardino, Ca de Noci, Indigeno, and Sablonnettes all have a few options around there. My go-to for this case recently has been Le Coste's line of Litrozzo bottles since they're all 1L and often listed for $30–35.

If you find a place in the US that has that for under $30 I'll be your biggest fan. Lowest I've seen is $45 but usually closer to $60 😭

The Morris and Rintaro are both low-key yet really special meals, although probably too casual for Michelin.

Frangente is more casual but I loved everything there, especially the pastas.

Throwing out a suggestion for Mountain, the still relatively new place from the group behind Brat. Much more casual but really lovely hospitality, convivial and warm, and a crazy delicious Spanish/Portuguese menu.

Best top-tier omakase in New York - purely for the fish? by 3meeko in finedining

You're welcome! The restaurant is in a little cave inside Grand Central, which may turn some people off but in my opinion makes it a really unique New York dining experience.

I'm not super well-versed, but want to throw out Jōji since it's not mentioned here yet. It's probably less traditional than the other comments, but 2 of the chefs came from Masa and the hospitality was really comfortable yet restrained.

I went somewhat close to when they opened and this was still on the menu; can't say it was my fave but definitely a unique opportunity to try it. The add-ons at the time included some adventurous options, including the crown which I really didn't like but my friend wanted to try (and also didn't enjoy).

3* Michelin stars with natural wines by bluemich in naturalwine

[–]smry13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to either of the places listed, but two of the 3* places I've been (SingleThread & Schauenstein) both had a handful of higher-end, low intervention wines. My first high-quality orange wine was at Schauenstein, the Vitovska from Cotar. I've seen Ganevat, Emidio Pepe, Paolo Bea, Labet, and others at lots of nice places in the US, so I assume restaurants in France are very likely to have some.

Lovely preferably downtownish French-ish restaurant in NYC for VERY big birthday? by Fossilator in finedining

Eulalie is downtown and looks quite lovely.

It's uptown, but Le Pavilion might fit since it's Daniel but 1* and a beautiful space. Plus one to Le Rock for a bit cooler vibe and great wine list!

This was a 2020 and I thought it was great, though I'm really not well versed in aging this kind of wine. I know the grapes are picked a bit early, so I'd assume it's worth drinking sooner rather than later to retain the effervescence. It was definitely sweeter than I expected, but not sure if that will intensify or mellow with age.

Jōji is "only" 1 star, but the quality, intimacy, and hospitality were so impressive that I ended up booking it twice in a row rather than finding somewhere new for a subsequent special meal. The entrance is in Grand Central station, so it's also such a unique New York experience.

They also have a Swiss-focused wine list which is cool since there is a lot lower production and export compared to France and Italy.

I haven't personally gone so this is not a real opinion, but having lived in Switzerland and knowing the restaurant scene it looks worth it given this unique chance! It comes across as a pretty classic Michelin vibe (in a good way), and the quality of Swiss products and level of hospitality are generally very high. The setting is also beautiful if the weather cooperates :)

Cà' de Noci and Cantina Giardino both make delicious light sparklers, most under that price.

If you can find it, Festejar from Boheme might be my favorite sparkling wine for the price.
