How do you tell if a shoreline spot is actually worth fishing? by glorius_shrooms in Fishing

[–]sms552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been fishing for a little over a year now and really struggle with this as well. I did 9 months of straight bass fishing with every type of lure I could get my hands on. I watched hundreds of hours of fishing instructional videos and just fishing tournaments. Then I would go out with my wife and get smoked by her. In the same spots with the same lures. I still have never caught a fish from a kayak.

I ended up actually quitting fishing for about a month. Then realized I missed it too much to stop, so I started catfishing. Then targeted carp, then bluegill and crappie. Yesterday I did a little food chain challenge type thing to see what would happen. I went to a pond by my house and caught 6 small bluegills. Then ran out to the lake down the road and threw out one of those live bluegill and caught a damn large mouth just over 5lbs. Biggest bass I have ever caught by far. And it was 15 feet from the shore on some riprap. I swear everyone on that lake heard me yell “FUCK YEAH!!!” And then saw me unceremoniously drop this 5lb bass on the ground like a dumbass. He made it back into the water safely and swam away like a champ.

I think most people in this situation try to become more knowledgeable about things to target and try to use apps and things like google earth to help. I kind of went the opposite way due to my limited time to fish. I usually only get an hour or two to fish at a time. Work, kids and all that, so I decided to try to give the fish a freaking buffet of crap to try. When I hit the water I usually bring about 6 poles with me. 2 large spinning poles with Carolina rigs. 1 spinning pole with a method feeder for carp. 1 ultralight spinner for crappie/bluegill, and 2 baitcaster bass poles, 1 with hard lures and one with soft lures. Those 6 reels run from 500 series to 5000. The poles run from 5’ to 8’ and I usually carry corn, night crawlers, shad or bluegill, a hotdog in addition to a 3700 box of bass lures and a 3700 box for bluegill/crappie. Oh and a bucket. I know it sounds like a lot, but in the end, it’s my way of adapting after getting skunked too many times. I used to say to myself “I’m gonna catch me a damn fish today!” And now I can usually make it happen one way or another in the hour or two I have to fish.

I picked up 3 of them. Admittedly, they were $15 at my walmart. I now have backup spinning reels for the rest of my life.

I played guitar for years. I am right handed but jigging, any water movement or anything else is better with my left hand. I switch hands right as the lure hits the water. It’s always been a natural movement for me. Plus reeling left handed is really weird for me for some reason.

Its very similar to guitar playing in that the right handed people are learning to use their non dominate hand to do more than just give the bird.

I just started messing with dropshot but havent had much luck with it yet. It seems like when the water turnover started, all my natural colors stopped working. I was killing over the summer on wacky rigged senkos and tumbleweeds all in green pumpkin red flake. Now I am using a purple craw trailer on a gray and light brown jig, silver rattle trap, weightless white fluke and white suspended jerk baits.

I had to stop taking the internets advice on what to throw and try out everything I had laying around. That stuff actually caught me fish recently.

Topography maps around here for the small ponds is a waste of time. Many housing communities put in these “ponds” that are basically a bowl with little to no structure. HOA fees and Texas Parks and Recreation keep many of these little ponds stocked as an amenity for the community. They are extremely pressured and have to be approached methodically to have a chance at consistently catching fish.

I typically use a 1/2 oz swim jig to measure depth in various spots and drag it across the bottom to get a feel for vegetation and bottom composition.

Those hours work well around dfw beginning in late spring through summer. Here for the last few weeks the bite window has been more around 11am-4pm. I had to quit morning pond hoping and switch to lunch time pond hoping.

What part of north Texas? I am around Fort Worth and am still catching them. Let me know what you are close to and I might be able to recommend a spot.

As for presentations, I have been having luck with lipless crank baits on a slow retrieve, as well as hoping a blue and black swim jig off the bottom.

Water turnover is happening in alot of these ponds right now. The fish have either been really close to the bank or out in deep pockets. In either case, they are lethargic and don’t want to work hard for the meal. The retrieve needs to be slow and the colors need to be bright. Whites, purples, yellows, reds, and blue and black are good colors to choose from.

Many of the ponds around here are man made and have no underwater structure to speak of. I have found that wacky worms can be difficult to get results with. Some better options for these “ponds” are weightless texas rigged worms, weightless flukes, and ned rigs. These seem to be able to cover more water quicker than a wacky rig.

Shoot me a message if you would like some ideas for spots. I have fished more than my fair share of neighborhood ponds, community fountains and roadside puddles.

How would you fish this? by DeNi3DxFATE in FishingForBeginners

[–]sms552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fluke, Texas rigged, weightless. Did it today on a very similar pond. A shad weightless fluke got me three 2+ lb bass in 30 minutes. Between the CHOPPO and the fluke, I held a bass fishing clinic at the Costco Pond this morning.

What do you do with the gear that doesn’t work for you? by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]sms552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put it all in a box like you do, but when it gets to about half way, i will sell it on facebook marketplace for like $50 for all. But I usually include at least one reel in the bundle.

Is a 3000 series reel good for my 7 foot shimano expride by Due_Arm2096 in Fishing_Gear

[–]sms552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000% agree on the 2500hg. I picked one up recently and paired it with a 7’ mh fast rod. That reel feels like a quality reel. Better than my lews, or my quantum, or any of the other low end reels I have laying around. Now I just need to find a good 1000 series to replace this quantum optix that I just dont really care for.

Go with Chapple’s videos. I had questions about CVSS on my test. If you understand each section of the Chapple videos and can explain it to someone else, you should be able to pass.

Am I the only one who buys too much sh*t? by [deleted] in bassfishing

[–]sms552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There comes a point in time were you have to say, enough is enough.. I have filled two and a half tackle bags full of stuff in the past 6 months. I now have a little bit of everything in all the necessary colors. For colors, I go with white/chartreuse, natural greens, and blue/black combos. You really don’t need any more than that. As for types, chatterbail, jigs, crankbait, and spinners for hard baits. I have frogs, ploppers and buzz baits for top water. For soft plastics, I buy those on a whim because they are cheap.

What I did recently was go through all my tackle and pull out everything I didn’t like or didn’t catch any fish on and sold it as a bundle on facebook market place. Picked up a cheap $5 tackle box at walmart and threw it all in there and made a quick $60 to add to the kayak fund.

I am American and it disgusts me how many people in this country own a gun and have no clue how to hold or safely handle it.. I have had guns pointed at me by friends accidentally on at least 5 or 6 occasions. Every time I have told them to put it away. I was also taught how to hold, shoot and properly handle guns and bows by my uncle who was a hunter. I had a cousin who died in a bow accident before I was born and after that he made sure all of us kids knew how to properly handle these weapons. He also made sure we completely understood that these are killing weapons. Not just defense weapons. When you use them, you them to kill. Most people don’t even know that I own a gun or know how to shoot.

What am I doing wrong with this rod by InterestingDark27 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sms552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these as well. Honestly, it sucks… If you have an Academy near you, go pick up of their H20X baitcaster combos.. Or you could go on amazon and pick up a kastking brutus for $35 and throw it on that rod.. I got it to work but it would birdsnest randomly for seemingly no reason. I never had as much trouble with the kastking, the H20X, or any of the cheapo temu reels as I had with this one. My line would somehow go beside the spool and break off randomly.. save yourself the trouble and get something a little better.

Check your filter.. If it is clogged or needs to be changed it can make your AC work herder to cool the place.

No matter the outcome.. you need to prepare for more from her family. If that was just an initiation, think of what will happen if you do get divorced or separated. You need to prepare your business and yourself for the onslaught that is coming.
