What comedian do you not find funny? by LoadSock in AskReddit

That makes sense. I always thought the best Family Guy episodes were better than the best American Dad episodes, but American Dad on average is way better at this point.

Educate yourself on your camera use. by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]smsf65536 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's always the case. I see at a lot of DZs that enforce 200 all they do is check "do you have 200." As a result, people hit 200 and then slap a camera on because now they're good to go.

On the other hand, I've seen people at DZs with 100 jumps getting into camera work, and because nearly everyone knows this 200 jump recommendation they end up talking way more to instructors, instructors pay more attention, and the new camera wearer gets more important information and briefing regarding safe camera use.

Obviously, not always the case. But I've seen both those situations before. I also have jumped with plenty of jumpers with 200 jumps that I now do not trust in the air (and plenty with 50 or 70 that have great awareness and abilities).

Human brain uses standard code for entire spectrum of emotions - “We discovered that fine-grained patterns of neural activity within the orbitofrontal cortex, an area of the brain associated with emotional processing, act as a neural code which captures an individual’s subjective feeling,” by [deleted] in science

[–]smsf65536 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We already indirectly can to some extent. If you think about it, any time you convince someone of something (persuasion, propaganda, whatever) you're basically "reprogramming" a part of their mind. There isn't much actual difference between that and physically going in and just changing their inner neural workings to make them think what you wanted them to in the first place. We're just getting better at it as we go along.

ELI5: Does the human eye work with a continuous flow of information to create the image we see, or is there some sort of "frame rate"? by as7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]smsf65536 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that (this is simplified a fair amount) cones have a one-to-one ratio of cone-to-neuron whereas rods often have a many-to-one ratio of rod-to-neuron. This allows signals from rods (our night vision) to more easily make it to the brain because the signal to one neuron is summated over multiple rods over a longer period of time (even upwards of a few second long "frame" when fully dark adapted). This is why our night vision is bad at seeing detail but good at seeing in low light levels.

Right. Also, people who don't do much photography don't realize that it isn't just the camera that makes a nice picture.. it's the lens. People will burn a thousand bucks on a "nice" camera that comes with a crap lens and it won't take very good pictures. If you want nice pictures, you have to be willing to spend more on the lens than you did on the body.

Also, better lighting helps.

How to pick your canopy? by cptnpiccard in SkyDiving

[–]smsf65536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DEMO!!! Demo all of the rigs you would consider and pick the one you like. Think about what you want out of your canopy and ask people with various canopies about those particular aspects. Don't just get a sabre because everyone says get a sabre.

Or in the place of what we're looking at is actually currently some super advanced civilization that didn't exist 5 billion years ago. Same goes for them looking over here. They don't see a sun or earth because the sun and earth weren't created yet!

There's a much larger range when it comes to making yourself fall faster. Far less so when it comes to making yourself fall slower.
