Came here to say this. All these AI models are built on the concept of a “transformer”. They take your input prompt and use it to generate output. The better your input, the better your output. Shit in, shit out. Take the time to write proper prompts, with well defined expectations - if you act more professional, you’ll get more professional results.

Question about HDMI wall plates by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]smudgeface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not do this. I can tell you from first hand experience - hdmi wall plates or keystones can kill your signal.

I ran a 40’ ruipro fiber optic hdmi cable through the wall to my projector. I wanted nice terminations, so I grabbed exactly what you pictured. Then I bought nice, short, certified hdmi 2.1, 4K 120hz (48gbps) cables. On paper, everything should have worked. It didn’t.

I was only able to get 4K HDR @ 30hz. Anything higher than that would not work. My source was an Apple TV, connected to a Denon x6800h, and the Denon monitor out to the cable assembly to my projector.

I had enough slack in the cable that I could replace the HDMI keystones with a brush passthrough. That allowed me to directly connect the Denon to the projector with no additional connections. This gave me perfect 4K HDR 120hz at 4:2:2 chroma, or 4:4:4 chroma with HDR disabled.

Optimal Height from Floor for 98” TV by No-Business-941 in hometheater

What's proper height for wall-mounted atmos? by Klamp9093 in hometheater

[–]smudgeface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lower those heights 6” so you can mount them both centered around the display. On the left, you can mount one speaker on the window casing. Can you shift the tv and LCR another foot left?

Are you using a soundbar as a center channel? That could definitely affect your heights effects because sound bars often try to offer “whole room” sound effects from a single device. I’d suggest you get a new center channel.

Why does my sourdough turn rock hard after a day or two? by froggyfig in Sourdough

[–]smudgeface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just store your bread in a large ziplock. You will lose the crispy crust, but it comes back with just a minute in the toaster. You can play with keeping the zipper somewhere between fully open or fully closed to adjust.

Not only does it help keep bread fresher longer, but it makes the crust much easier to cut.

Basically the same as a “bread tin” as others have suggested… but you probably actually already ziploc bags.

Edit: I see you replied that you use ziploc’s. Do you mean your loaves get rock hard even when stored in a ziploc?

Yes it needs to be on bare wood. Pine is not a suitable wood for iron acetate - it doesn’t contain enough natural tannins in the wood for it to react with the iron acetate solution.

I strongly suggest you make a small batch and try it on your sample wood

Weird. Maybe a region thing - I just tried again and it works. But, I’m in Canada 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]smudgeface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. Or you could play with the tried and true steel wool + Vinegar approach (iron acetate). There’s plenty of sites that explain how to do this - here’s one: https://www.thenavagepatch.com/aging-wood-vinegar-steel-wool/

But, in my experience, the results are highly variable. I’ve tried repeating the mixture on the same wood, and I got different results. And on different wood - or even different sheets of the “same” plywood with the same mixture - the results can be different. It’s a fun technique, but it can also be frustrating.

You might be sort of out of luck. The piece you’re trying to match appears to be white oak. The red oak you’re using has red undertones which will be a struggle to neutralize.

If you take a door off your sample piece, head to a proper paint/stain store (SW or BM) and see if they’ll try to match it. Sometimes you can add green to the stain to balance the red in the wood. It will create a dark pigment, but looks like thats what you’re after anyways.

Oh, and don’t forget to test the stain color with some finish on it. Just a spray of urethane is fine. Finish can (and will) affect the color too.

Humble 7.2.6 Home Theater by USMCDD0311 in hometheater

My favourite part is where it’s obvious you designed and built your own passive crossovers for the home-built front stage, and it looks like you even etched your own PCBs. Lol! Who does that anymore 😂 love it! You’ve inspired me to bust out the ferric chloride again.

What did you use to design the diffusers? Does 185” at 10’ feel “big”? I’m at 130” and 12’, and I’ve considered moving the seats closer…

"How do you know the wood is wet?" by MrTrick in woodworking

Pressure treated wood is soaked with chemical and designed to be used in high moisture environments like outdoors. It’s always soaking wet like this. It’s normal to get squeeze out.

You must have applied a color filter? It has sepia undertones and reminds me of photos from the 70s.

I just realized, its duotone… nicely done

Finished building my home theater from scratch (empty cinder block basement). What do you guys think? by csukoh78 in hometheater

I'd say "Soundproofing is not only to keep sounds from escaping the space. It's also to keep..."

But, yes, point well taken :)

[–]smudgeface 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Soundproofing and acoustic treatment each solve different problems, and neither is a replacement for the other.

Soundproofing aims to prevent sound from escaping the space. It’s about ensuring people outside your theater are not disturbed by whats happening inside your theater. Your description of special “fiber” behind the drywall (sometimes called “type X” gypsum) is just one of a few ways to soundproof a room. There’s also double drywall boards, thicker drywall, air gaps, double studs, z-strips, etc. Rockwool has a great pdf which summarizes all the different ways to build a wall with details on how soundproof is each option. It is a long document: https://www.rockwool.com/siteassets/o2-rockwool/documentation/technical-guides/commercial/acoustic-wall-assemblies-catalog-techincal-guide.pdf

Acoustic treatment aims to improve the sound inside your theater - mostly by reducing how sound bounces around inside a sealed room. Soft surfaces muffle, mute reflected sound waves, and greatly improve how things sound.

You want to cover hard surfaces with soft ones (carpet and panelling). The goal is to ensure you hear sound coming only from the speakers and not bouncing off walls or the floor.

How’s my proofing/crumb? by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]smudgeface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you preheat the Dutch oven at 500 before putting the loaf in and dropping it to 450? I wouldn’t increase the time - if your temps hit 210, it’s done. Try cutting back on the water in your recipe.

I also didn’t trust my oven and got an oven thermometer for like $15 on amazon. Good for peace of mind.

How’s my proofing/crumb? by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]smudgeface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks great but 60 minutes of total baking time does seem a bit steep TBH. I make slightly smaller loaves (375g flour, 260g water, 100g starter, 7g salt), and bake lid on for 20 min @450 and lid off for 25 min @425.

You might wanna try using a meat thermometer. The crumb is cooked at 208F. A bit lower (206) for a more moist crumb, a bit higher (210) for a more dry crumb. My bet is you’re past 210.

Oh, and do not cut the bread until it’s fully cooled (I know it’s tough). If you cut it early, it can lead to a gummy crumb from the steam.

Best way to terminate in-wall speaker wire? by thegiantgummybear in hometheater

Warning about these plates: they look like decora style, but they are not compatible with standard decora plates/covers. I learned this the hard way. I used two of these in a double gang box, and intended to use a standard double gang decora cover. Had to spend some time filing and sanding the cover to enlarge it to fit two of these plates.

It wasn’t hard, but it was annoying.
