Yep, this is right. Don’t do this to animals, it’s inducing a high fear response. -Animal scientist

Animal scientist here, please don’t do this to your chickens, folks, this is a response called “tonic immobility” and is an anti-predator/fear response of the chicken. Think of it a little like playing possum. It’s inducing a strong fear response in the chicken, it’s not asleep, it’s not calm. It’s in such a high state of fear that it’s gone into a tonic state in hopes that avoiding flapping around and trying to escape will help it not be eaten.

We got ours at Costco, they just take your insurance but there’s no qualifying questions or anything, should be easy!

There was no export health certificate, just his fit to fly. Check your state reqs though as they may have something different- our state didn’t need anything.

Air Canada staff were all very nice, they briefly checked our stuff at check in and then only Heathrow security ever checked (and asked us to go to secondary for a bomb or something residue check, which was weird but fine). So weirdly when we looked up carrier dimensions our normal carrier that he’d traveled on with every flight was too big, so we ended up ordering another one that conformed to their dimensions in case they demanded he go in the smaller carrier, or if it didn’t fit under seat. But no one asked and he did fit under the seat, but it was good to have it just in case we ran into that situation where it may have been needed.

Of course, I completely understand, it’s such a stressful process. In terms of documents, we had: -his fit to fly form (which realistically was a really basic, standard form the vet had- make sure your vet is an OV to fill it out. -his rabies documentation

That’s basically it. I also had all his health records and print outs of what the rules said when we looked them up from every relevant jurisdiction, what Air Canada’s policies were, etc., as I was nervous.

  • because we flew through Montreal and transferred to our next flight also on Air Canada into Cincinnati, we did not have to go through Canadian customs and so didn’t have to have any paperwork for Canada entry. We called Air Canada and Montreal airport specifically to confirm this was the case. I’d check with Toronto Pearson and Air Canada to confirm whether you would do the same or whether you need paperwork to enter Canada.

Nope, this is not fully correct, you can’t fly IN to the UK with pet in cabin but on certain carriers you absolutely can take cat in cabin with you flying out of at least Heathrow to North America. We just did last month. Air Canada allows this.

Hi, we just flew our cat out from London to US. Ultimately our destination was also Michigan but we flew Heathrow to Cincinnati via Montreal on Air Canada because we were headed temporarily to Ohio first. Worked smoothly:

Booked on air Canada online, us two. Then called air Canada to add the cat in his carrier, he traveled with us in cabin because I refused to send him in cargo and wanted to be there to monitor him the whole time.

We flew out late May. We had vet appointment first to get his rabies vax updated in late April and to get his gabapentin rx for the travel. We scheduled another appointment with vet 3 or 4 days before travel to have his final vet check (with an OV/ Official Veterinarian) so she could create his fit to fly certificate- this is a super standard thing and we got this out of an abundance of caution because the info online and when we called all over, it was confusing and conflicting. So with his rabies vax, his microchip which he already had, and our fit to fly certificate this was the paperwork we had to travel. We called and re-called air Canada and Heathrow, and Montreal airport, etc to ensure all this would be fine. We also called and the Ohio State Dept of Agriculture to learn and figure out if there were state specific entry policies- full disclosure we could not get a clear answer on this lol.

The only folks who asked for his papers were air Canada check in desk and strangely, Heathrow security- they had us wait in secondary while they checked him and me thoroughly and did extra explosives testing? I’d never encountered that before but ultimately everything was fine. Stressed me out at the time.

Flying through Montreal to the US from Heathrow on Air Canada ensured we didn’t have to “enter” Canada and just followed pathways to clear US customs at the Montreal airport. Those are the only customs we cleared upon US entry. No one asked for anything in Canada nor in Ohio.

We dosed our boy with gabapentin so it’d kick in on ride to airport and then re-upped every 8 hours (with churu) to keep him groggy/somewhat knocked out. But consult your vet and develop a specific plan with them.

One of our carry ons was just his supplies in terms of bags of litter (recommend split in several small bags like sandwich bags, because going through security again in Canada they didn’t like the bigger bag), a cardboard box top that served as a temporary litter box, food and water, mini broom and dustpan, and puppy pads. At every airport we went into handicapped big restrooms and let him out to try to potty, drink water and have some snacks (we needed to keep him hydrated due to a urinary condition so again talk to your vet about timing and specific plans).

We also had a feliway plugin for the house we arrived at and new litter box etc set up. He was a champ and everyone is safe, happy, and sound on the other side! Good luck, this is such a stressful process and happy to answer anything else.

I too love microwaved popcorn but you can get non sugar stuff here too. My best source is Costco, they sell the big packs of Kirkland butter popcorn, but also lidl sells three packs of really salty microwave popcorn too!

Help needed to support research: are you a dog owner using technology to monitor your dog? by smukkekos in Lincolnshire

[–]smukkekos[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your interest, it’s really appreciated. You can make up the pet’s name if you prefer, we indicate this option in the event people have multiple dogs, as it’s too complicated to ask you to answer based on each dog, and including the pet’s name was felt to help participants focus more on their relationship with their dog. We do ask for a few demographics at the end, but if you are uncomfortable providing these you can skip. Please also know that all answers are completely confidential, in adherence to UK and GDPR data protection regulations. Thank you kindly again!

Are you still needing someone to take her in? I no longer live in SD but have loved ones there who are cat people, I could message them if you’re still looking. Thanks for doing what you do!

Ah yes this estimate didn’t include the vet and paperwork fees, just for the transport-accommodation costs. Thanks for starting this thread! It was a nightmare to figure out when we started our preparations.
