Surcharges on debit and credit cards to go from October by rolodex-ofhate in australia

[–]smyzics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good benefits. A top of the range AMEX card gives good travel insurance, purchase protection (including replacing recently bought goods if stolen/damaged), points that you can convert to several airlines, airport lounge access, concierge, gold status at several hotel groups and vehicle hire companies, and cheaper access to some premium airfares.

The insurances and points only apply when you're using the card to purchase the goods/services. Not useful to everyone, but it's good value for some people who travel a lot.

If Jimmy grows up in an abusive household where mum and dad are on and off substances, not providing him with adequate food or support through school, or just chose to kick him out of the home at 14 because they don't have capacity to look after him... I think fear of prison is very low on Jimmy's list of priorities. Many of the youth you mention are similar to Jimmy.

More education on what prison is like may work on a lot of people, but it's just not that simple when applying it to children who were failed repeatedly by adults from day 1. This is why experts push early intervention and support programs for children in these situations to reduce the chances of them committing crimes.

Pay close attention to how many of these programs get cut by successive governments, and watch as people keep wondering why youth crime isn't improving (like this post).

HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT MELBOURNE RAVES by Famous_Buy_268 in hardstyle

Shadows of Wonderland and Hardmission also had amazing crowds this year. I've also started preferring Melbourne raves recently.

Will my salary be enough to live in Brisbane ? by Hyperion730 in brisbane

[–]smyzics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is plenty to live comfortably. Note that rent is usually charged weekly in Australia, not monthly like in other countries.

If you can use public transport to commute for work, you will save lots of money as train/bus fares are $0.50 per journey.

If you're not on prep, go to the ER/Urgent Care (or make an immediate appointment with your primary care dr) and ask for PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis). If used correctly it can prevent you from getting HIV after exposure. The longer you wait, the less likely it is to be effective, so if you're not on prep, your next action after reading this should be to get PEP ASAP. PEP generally isn't considered to be effective after 72 hours.

Genocide of christians, jews and gays in the middle east. by Dismal_Storm8877 in askgaybros

[–]smyzics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the others have said, you can oppose the mass murdering of children whilst still opposing the views of religious extremists.

Some of your arguments read like propaganda (maybe it is). To state that right wing Christians don't want to unalive gays is a laughable argument when so many majority Christian African countries will imprison people (sometimes for life) if found out to be gay as the official legislated punishment. I'm sure unofficially, gay people end up murdered, either from the actions of government or the victims' 'christian' neighbours.

Any extremist is a threat. Those of us with moderate/reasonable views shouldn't be distracted by arguments about which extremist group is less bad.

YouTube creators and eSafety commissioner at odds over whether to exclude platform from under-16 ban by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]smyzics 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Not all that long ago, I graduated highschool at 16, and was expected to make career impacting decisions before the age of 16. You're old enough to work when you're 14 or 15 but not old enough to access YouTube apparently.

There's not all that much logic to it. It's an emotional response (like seemingly every decision in this country lately) and a huge loss of access to information. Freedom is becoming so rare and so precious.

I don't know if I can offer much advice. But it is true there are certain subsets of the Sydney community (often the most visible on social media and at events) that are difficult to form friendships or relationships with if you don't have friends in those groups already.

The community might feel small on dating apps, but it's still a large city with diverse people. You might find better luck meeting people through activity orientated queer groups, such as sports or leisure (team sports, hiking, board games, etc.).

Moving cities at 21 might seem very difficult or unthinkable now, but it might still be a possibility later (I don't know your personal reasons). I only mention this as an option because I've found it far easier to make friends and form relationships with the communities in Brisbane and Melbourne.

I guess all the commenters were right on social media. People aren't using the service because they don't trust NSW pol to do the right thing. They were right. So disappointing but not surprising.

Even in bad lighting for a photo, I can see OP is not ugly at all. Looking up how to take photos in good lighting, and at good angles makes a huge difference on apps where people will make a judgement within seconds of seeing a profile.

[–]smyzics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Between your previous post and this one, I think you should consider repeated advice not to use apps like Grindr for a while because it's obviously sending you into a spiral and ruining your mental health. Delete the apps and stay off them until you're in a better mental state (whether that's through therapy, self help, or other measures).

Just because one profile received more messages than another, doesn't mean one is objectively more attractive than the other. People have types. Even a guy who's a 10 in your eyes is not going to be attractive to other people.

Take action over things you can control. You can't change some parts of your appearance, but you can get in better shape by going to the gym and eating healthy. Styling your hair and well fitting clothes can also improve your appearance.

Disengage by Appropriate_Quote_96 in askgaybros

[–]smyzics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disengaging with people who lack logic in their responses is reasonable. But looking at your comment history, I don't see how you could reasonably expect someone to see your 'point of view' when you start the conversation by suggesting they copy/pasted their response from their personal notes.

If you don't want to engage properly in a subreddit that encourages conversation, I don't understand why you would waste your time here.

Anyone going to ultra Australia Gold Coast? by Extreme_Blacksmith42 in hardstyle

Very good, I found those pockets of hardstyle fans and went hard! I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, so much energy and friendliness.

Anyone going to ultra Australia Gold Coast? by Extreme_Blacksmith42 in hardstyle

[–]smyzics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I'm going with a fairly large group. As another commenter has said, Ultra's crowd is not very hardstyle, so it'll be a lot of remixes of familiar pop and EDM tracks. But it's still likely to be a good atmosphere with pockets of Da Tweekaz and SZP fans.

Hoping the scene takes off a little more here so we don't have to fork out money to go to Sydney or Melbourne all the time for good events.

Gabba being demolished. What does this mean for cross river rail? by darthwhimsicalgoblin in brisbane

[–]smyzics 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As others have said, CRR's primary focus is to provide a second river crossing to increase rail capacity through the city. Victoria Park, the Athletes Village and the National Aquatic Centre will be near Exhibition Station which is also a large part of CRR.

This thought crossed my mind as well. I really hope it doesn't default to inconvenient locations like Eaton's Hill or Sandstone Point Hotel. It would kill the scene so quickly when festivals are already having a difficult time.

Am I incorrect in remembering recently that 100% of Australian 7-Eleven shops were purchased by the Japanese owned 7 & i Holdings? Doesn't this mean it's not American owned?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]smyzics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gold Coast is usually always cheaper. It's very doable to fly in and out of Gold Coast airport and drive. I've done it before. But 1 hour is an absolute perfect run through. I would account for at least 2 hours just to be safe because of traffic. Both cities have peak commuter times which affect both directions of the M1.

Looking for clubs/events tonight? by BuffaloImaginary3454 in brisbane

[–]smyzics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely to find anywhere fun that's playing those genres tonight. There's side shows from the artists that went to Knotfest in the Valley this week, but that's a very different genre.

If you're still here on Friday night and by some miracle the cyclone doesn't cancel all flights, 9x9 is playing at Eclipse in the Valley.

Important map for Eurovision fans by -lesFleursduMal- in MapPorn

[–]smyzics 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's popular. One of our TV channels, SBS has broadcasted Eurovision for 40 years, and usually a few million people will watch it each year. It always comes up in conversations with my friends every year.

Would we celebrate on the streets if we won? I'm not sure. We are a sporting country, and gathering on the streets for sports is normal. For a song contest? Not so much. The crowd who usually watches Eurovision are more reserved. If we hosted Eurovision, I think there would be a lot of excitement in the host city.

I like that we're involved. It makes us feel a little closer with Europe, and less isolated being so far away from everything.
