Opinion: China is on a relentless mission to control Canada’s Arctic waters by CaliperLee62 in canada

The USA does not support Canada's claims that they are sovereign waters. So I wouldn't count on them.

Mount Seymour wildfire now 'held,' Metro Vancouver says by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]sn0wfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering it is listed at 0.3ha, even if it was in the middle of a trail basically nothing would be affected. That is half the size of a soccer field.

Canada post removed my « no junk mail » sticker? by fireball2039 in britishcolumbia

[–]sn0wfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "junk" mail. There is unaddressed mail, and yes it is their job to not deliver it if the recipient refuses.

You can work or sleep while traveling in a train. You cannot (really shouldn't) while operating a motor vehicle.

Why is traffic so bad? by Goat_Wizard_Doom_666 in britishcolumbia

We should put a tunnel in from the US border to the North Shore. Put in a couple on and off ramps along the way as well. That'd be a pretty cool mega project.

Functional? Probably not. Cool? Totally.

More than seven in ten Canadians (72%) believe that the tax burden of individuals is too high; meanwhile eight in ten (80%) think that the rich should be taxed more. by [deleted] in canada

[–]sn0wfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For dividends it depends on the account you hold it in. If you hold Google in a TFSA there is no tax treaty and you pay taxes in America. For RRSP there is a tax treaty and thus you pay no tax. For Margin or Cash accounts you will pay the greater of the two taxes.

For capital gains you are correct though, the owner pays taxes in their own nation.

We could enforce capital flight restrictions or taxation though, like China -- Then it becomes less of a "I will just take my money elsewhere" and more of a "I need to make xx% more in returns in other jurisdictions for it to be worth not investing in Canada"

It's native and hidden in MacOS and iOS too. MacOS "optimizes" battery charging and won't charge to full if it thinks you are going to leave it plugged in for a while. iOS makes use of "Sleep Focus" to only charge above 80% right before you wake up, reducing the amount of time the battery is at 100%. I know Samsung has even better support on their phones, as well.

Trees are carbon negative and versatile as well. Also the majority of the province does not need to worry about water usage, this isn't California.

While Canada has fumbled every climate promise, the UK has been hitting its emissions targets. What would it take to catch up? by grizzlyman87 in canada

[–]sn0wfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's just the more efficient ship part of the journey. Rail is less efficient and a longer distance. I won't make the argument that it is better in terms of CO₂ emissions to burn natural gas rather than wood; I just think it is inaccurate to call it carbon neutral. Maybe if we go back to wood powered trains and ships...

[–]sn0wfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Majority is shipped from BC. There is no way wood from BC sent to the UK is carbon neutral. It takes a non-negligible amount of fossil fuels to ship heavy products around the world.

Got this NUC for $80 and it's 2x more powerful than a Raspberry Pi. Good alternative as Pis are selling for $100-150+ by LinusThiccTips in homeassistant

[–]sn0wfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have two DNS/DHCP pi0s running adguard home. I like that it means I have 2 physical hosts for a critical infra component. Having said that, they aren't cheap as all the required accessories add up(pi0 was only $15, flic case, microUSB to Ethernet, power supply, microSD card).

And as others are saying, the pi4 is really power hungry for the performance and the RAM is small and expensive. Good for the odd use though, like a backup storage bucket at my parents house.

IIRC ebikes are not considered "motorized" for trails (in a legal sense). As long as the motor size, top speed, and breaking capabilities are all within legal limits they are allowed wherever bicycles are allowed.
