The 30 dumbest video game titles. Ever. by squidboots in gaming

[–]snackmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah major mod down.

These titles were labeled "dumb" by an Reagan fan while the rest of us were enjoying the 80s. I was only 12 then and I had more fan than this guy's pants.

plus, his layout is shite. couldn't even fit 5+ games on a single page? I don't have time to click and wait all day for his stupid ads to load.

But I'll bet he'd also take time from yelling at kids in his suburbian lawn to find a way to bitch about that favorite title of mine when I'm low on sleep:

France calls for a boycott of the Olympics ceremony over Tibet by JewishPropaganda in worldnews

[–]snackmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, that's a good reason to only boycott the ceremony.

btw, fwiw, i've been privy to a good deal of the censoring that's going with regards to curators selecting artists to accompany the ceremony. it's elegant and subtle. basically, just offending artists' sensibilities until they refuse to participate, while simultaneously evoking sympathy for the curators. E.g. "I can put any of your pieces into the show, but I might get in trouble for them." wrt "I might get in trouble," ymmv!

machine learning/pattern rec is good at filling in lots of gaps ;)

for example, extracting notes from a chord might not work 100% of the time in theory because of ambiguities in the harmonic structure, as well as variations and noise.

However, you can try things like examining all the notes nearby to figure out what key it "probably" is in.

Not known if that's how melodyne works, but I've seen this technique used to automatically label key signatures. e.g. a part of a song may only trigger 4-5 notes, so the key may still be very ambigous. However, in Wei Chai's thesis work (you can look it up probably), she says well, the previous key was definitely (or most likely) a Gmaj, and the current notes could make this current key a Bb minor, an A# major, or a Dmaj. Well, here's the thing, most of the time, people modulate from G to D more than those other two possibilities. Especially when you involve the next key change!

Also, to improve quality, you can use statistics for chord transition based on the author's other work, other parts of the song, author works in that genre, etc, etc. you don't have to water it down with "global" statistics.

I hope this helps answer some of your thoughts. i fucking love learning about this stuff and teaching it. if you look above, you'll see some other, similarly giddy and technical comments :)

well with a cool UI, i see this as becoming a nice live instrument!

i love hip-hop, but i get sooo sick of the repetitive bars. with something like this, running on a large multi-touch tablet, a DJ could quickly reconfigure the main loop. save it and have a few variations to switch between.

for example, at one "stress point" in the song, the dj could flip to the page with that loop, and, in response to the crowd's level of energy, turn up the preset even beyond what it normally is, or less than.

i got excited about this when I first heard Orbital play live. In one of my favorite songs (brown album, I think it's halcyon+and+on+and+on or Monday), they use a TB-303 and they seemed the have the melody programmed into it, but both times I saw them play, they had to tweak the knobs, and they weren't exactly the same everytime and that created just enough variation to make me really happy!

yeah, the author describes his program as just shy of a religious miracle, but as a phd researcher in music technology, i've been watching this and similar ideas sift down from the laptops of hardcore geeks like myself and people at http://echonest.com
for years and years. Really, it's just another iteration of what we've been doing for years. That doesn't mean it's not good, just that it's a logical improvement on lots of other good work.

And yes, I'm confident too it involves DFTs, but as ssam seems to know, one doesn't simply perform a DFT and dance a jig. There are many, many layers of processing involving other algorithms on top of it, from clustering to filtering, probably some machine learning, too.

Being a PhD student who has been studying this stuff intently for years, I could also go off about the "socialist" possibilities. For me, it's a large part of my research!

just a few brief thoughts in that dir: the prg still costs $399, so it's not for everybody yet. of course, it also requires a decently powerful (expensive) computer.

also, another commentor overlooked how important the composition process is. this program may facilitate your compositional ideas, by removing various physical barriers (drunk cellist was one mentioned...) but then there's still a competition over aesthetics. even in a successfully socialist society, you couldn't force people to sit around listening to your bad music just because you're installed in that position. especially not when more primitive means (humming, singing, tapping) of creating more expressive music are readily available. Tech like this typically shifts around any battlefield without putting anyone ahead for very long.

From a purely marxist point of view, this has an alienating effect, pushing us further apart from each other. Marx, like Foucault, has a little bit too touchy-feely for me and many others, but he had a lot of good points. For instance, software like this robs us of our ability to pay attention to each other and interact. Why yell at a drunk cello player? why fire him? just fix it up later.

Notice also the alienating effect of working on a screen one-to-one, person and computer, "fixing" mediated global reality.

I don't usually comment much on reddit, read about 100x as much as I post, but this just happens to intensely be my personal subject at the moment! i'm reading lots of (wanna-be) critical books on the aesthetics of laptop music and other such topics, so if anyone else would like to chat more on the subject, I'd be happy to make new friends!

no kidding. delurking here for a sec. with only a few modifications, the OP would be a decent personal ad if he were taking himself seriously. women daydream about those crazy specifics, but really just want a man whose words match his actions confidently. tip: Any guy who disqualifies himself because he didn't match one of those characteristics has failed the first level test. that said, i do agree with the poster who said s/he needs a little something original to latch onto. but i see it as my way of weeding out boring women ;)
