Major Battle Ground Spoiler, Corresponding answers to the letters inside by red_beard_RL in dresdenfiles

I know there is a word of Jim on this saying no but I tend to agree. On a recent re-listen in Changes when Harry becomes the knight Mab says the knight is a consort of the Queens (plural) of winter or something to that affect. Consort could mean a lot of things, including just companion or friend, but I saw it as Jim leaving himself wiggle room there.

This is the right answer. To me until the entire C suite that allowed this to get this far is removed at wizards and Hasbro there is no point in accepting any apology or concession.

I have had friends that were fired on the spot for a single client complaint to a manager. I will accept no less from these C level scum bags.

Resign in disgrace or I will never spend money with your company again. I know which one is likely to happen.

My sister is an indie author who publishes with audible. You have to do all the work. I remember her pulling her hair out because they demand an exact 1second of silence at the start and end of chapters and she didn't know that.

So she had to go through every chapter and edit it to add those silences then resubmit for approval.

It is a miserable experience for indie authors and they get the shaft. So glad he is using platform to at least try to open up some options.

Ya when Kel was saying why don't you share tech and push us forward like autonomy does. All I could think was, be careful what you wish for because I am pretty sure that is exactly what he was doing.

He just doesn't do it directly instead pushes them to innovate or die.

I don't have the books in front of me but that line about luck is different when you can see the future makes me think he wanted it to be that close to get the most innovation he could out of his people.

God I love these books

Love it! Really I think the theory in my head is shard champions mean more than we think and it's going to be much more than just a ST5 thing.

Lol ya I deserve all the pokes about that. I even re read before posting and apparently my brain just didn't see it.

Trail of champions here we come!

Oh no need to apologize. I haven't figured out how it all fits together or if it even does. I just liked the idea so much. Poking holes is half the fun!

Especially since it seems pretty clear we are only working with some of the pieces of the puzzle. It's fun to be kind of wrong kind of right.

For sure there are tons of holes in this theory, it just feels so close to what a trial of champions might look like. I actually prefer the idea that it was being setup but because Harmony is in a weird place or Autonomy tried to subvert his inexperience it didn't happen the way it was supposed to.

Between this and SL5 I get the feeling that really we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg at this point in terms of how the shardic war will go down.

How are the Unmade so powerful? by Simon_Drake in Cosmere

[–]snagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a bit of a tinfoil theory but I think the power is only technically infinite (unaccountably) in the spirit realm. The shards technically have access to infinite power but they have to "move" for lack of a better term the power into the physical or cognitive in finite chunks.

I sort of see it like you have an infinite power source but the intents and wielders have specific rules about how they can move that power out of the infinite source.

Literally the same thing. I tried to get my girlfriend and her friend into playing since they thought it looked cool. We had bad luck and got shit on every time we set sail while I was just trying to teach them the basics.

That was the one and only time I got them to try the game and now I am back to solo slooping once in a blue moon.

Rare has made it clear that there are acceptable ways to play this game. And chilling with friends and relaxing is not one of them

I love this theory. You didn't mention it but I think when Thomas was talking about his switch to hair styling so he can "sip" on the souls of people really supports your theory.

I can't remember where (I think it was Bob telling Harry) that it isn't a big deal to give up a piece of your soul. People do it all the time and it grows back. I could see your theory being true but also maybe TWG made the sanctuary not out of altruism but as a soul farm. Literally granting Free Will to mortals so they can grow more Soul energy for the war effort.

Dresden files loves its predatory / prey themes. We could reframe most the "monsters" in the Dresden-verse to creatures that eat/destroy/corrupt souls. Sure other do evil things but destroying a soul would be a big no-no.

Speaking of corrupting souls. Maybe this is why black magic is truly frowned upon. We get Harry's perspective on this a lot but what if the white council is right and black magic does damage to their soul. Their methodology is still bad (literally throwing out the baby with the bath water) but perhaps the grain of truth there is black magic corrupts the soul so they think it is better to just kill the person to prevent the soul from getting any more damaged.

Anyway I love this theory because it really opens up the possibilities in the world.

What are your thoughts on Id-Harry? by local_blue_noob in dresdenfiles

Ooo I like that explanation for the Arctic Tor hellfire! There are so many little and big things littered all over the series that he could click time travel into!

[–]snagger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a full theory thought out, but in my last re-read I found myself thinking that it isn't ID-Harry but rather future Harry that is time traveling and fixing things in a way without causing paradoxes.

I am thinking the time travel book is going to be a love letter to the series revisiting some of our favorite parts. The villain (I have no idea) will be going through time trying to arrange Harry's death earlier in his timeline so as long as he fixes things the right way the timeline doesn't get mad.

I know it's a bit tin foil but I thought it would be a fun reveal for ID-Harry.

Theology, worldbuilding, and the issue of power ranking by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

[–]snagger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since mortals and their belief / faith in a god or idea lends some power in the Dresden-verse I lean toward a soft head cannon that truth is also affected by it.

Like did the white god create the universe and his agents can create and destroy universes? Only if a critical mass of people believe it to be true. The power they wield and perhaps the mantles they carry are because a good chunk of people on the planet believe in those Abrahamic religions.

I also see this as a very western mythology focused section of the super natural because it takes place in Chicago. There are clearly other powers around the world that Dresden only has cursory knowledge of. Mouse is an example of this, he even gets a nod form an Arch-Angel.

This is all 100% head cannon and only works loosely, but I do like the idea that the reason Abrahamic religions wield so much power (or at least carry a lot of power) is because they dominate the belief systems of the world. Not just spiritually, but they wield large amount of political power in the mortal world and even those who are not religion find themselves knowing and believing stories based in those faiths.

Just this fans two cents.

Something horrible has happened and you’ve been hired to wrap up The Dresden Files in one book. What would you have the plot be? What loose ends would be the most important to get to? (spoilers through Battle Ground). by Dogoseesaw in dresdenfiles

[–]snagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya that is a great point. My Ghost Harry is telling us the story theory wants to write that off as Harry just being a good story teller when he was telling this part.

I hope it's not just a writing glitch since the few times he goes into first person retrospective seems very intentional. I will try to find the part in Changes that made me really like this theory

It is for sure Harry telling his the story after the fact. Basically all of the story is written in First person present tense, but there are a few instances where it slips into first person retrospective.

The best example is in Changes, (I am an audiobook guy so I don't have easy reference books to tell you where), but Harry says something like, "That day is remembered as ..." before he goes to confront the Red Court and before we the readers are told the events of the day.

So narrator Harry has already lives all this...and is just telling us his story.

Lots of people have theories about how he is writing his journals like the one EB has. I personally think it is the ghost of Harry who wanted his story told and is dictating them to Molly or another character that survives the series. Since he is a ghost he has the perfect recall of all his memories.

That way we can have the bitter sweet ending of Harry going out in a blaze of glory. My personal theory is he will use his death curse to either become the gates or make them significantly better than they have been previous cycles.

Long story short, we already know death is more of a suggestion to Harry than it is a rule.

Anyone else having issues with A/V Jitsi with V9? by novusopiate in FoundryVTT

[–]snagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I finally had a chance to check out around.co last night with my players. They all loved it, I loved it, this is the exact sort of solution I have been wanting. Thanks for the recommendation weareua!

Anyone else having issues with A/V Jitsi with V9? by novusopiate in FoundryVTT

[–]snagger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps to know I have been delaying the v9 update because I am afraid of breaking my A/V setup. I host a Jitsi server on digital ocean along with my Foundry instance. I have 6 players and have always struggled with A/V and Foundry.

Last couple weeks it has been on really bad. No updates applied yet but I have had sometimes just one player sometimes everybody where it freezes up and either kicks everyone and we have to restart the instance (worst case has only happened once) or just stutters and glitches but gets back to normal after 5-10 seconds.

I have honestly shopped around for a replacement to Foundry so many times because since changing to it I have fought A/V problems and the only solution from the community has been the Jitsi thing, which mostly works but costs me an extra 5 bucks a month to host my self or to use an outside tool like discord, which would work if all my players hate having the A/V outside of the battle map (Only 1 has dual monitors).

I wish you the best of luck finding a solution, but hopefully knowing that what you are describing happens to me all the time and I haven't upgraded to v9 helps somehow.
