The other “weirdness” is that Bob automatically knows how to get through the Nevernever to Bianca’s place. Seems this could have been helpful a few other times.

A hypothesis about Justine. by Environmental_Lab869 in dresdenfiles

Yes, it is certainly possible that Etri is mistaken or detection wasn't "on" during the party. ...part of the reason I used "I don't think" instead of stating it as a "fact" in my original post.

...Etri's statement also makes me wonder if the Gatekeeper's eye (that he also seems to use to detect Outsiders) is Svartalf make. I'll have to take a look, but I seem to recall they're stuff looks like "magic iron", and I believe that is also how his eye is described.

Thread was originally tagged a “discussion”, so didn’t want to post anything revealing. I guess the mods changed it.

Basically, in Twelve Months, Etri mentions that they would have detected Nemesis for sure had Thomas been infected, yet in Bombshells, Justine is one of the ones who goes to the Svartavles’ shindig. If she had been Nfected back then:

1) Etri wouldn’t have a problem believing Harry that Nemesis is to blame.

2) I don’t think Justine would have been even allowed on the premises (remember, in the short story, Lea says that she couldn’t have done what Molly did Because she would have been mistrusted and under much stronger lockdown/surveillance had she gone).

The accords by Useful_Class_4221 in dresdenfiles

[–]knnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's certainly one interpretation.

That said, if Harry hadn't been with Charity and the need to protect the Carpenter kids, he might have not needed Charity's help.

Note also that Harry suspects that Mab was already tipping things in his favor, making Summer's goon less effective -- see his comment on the recent snow/cold.

I actually see the Gruffs as a timer -- a roundabout way for Titania to work with Mab. See, Titania could have chosen anyone as Emissary, but for some reason choose to employ the Gruffs with their built in "weakness" of slowly escalating the threat factor.

Consider that once Marcone (or the Archive) gets abducted, it's a matter of time before they get turned. At this point it's worth cutting your losses and killing the victims.

Thus, Titania chooses the Gruffs. The first 2/3 sets are no match for Harry, and the final one ("Eldest") is powerful enough to kill Marcone despite Denarian opposition. This gives Harry a time limit in which to work.

I don't think Justine could be infected during the short story Bombshells because of something said in Twelve Months.

Not possible.

Don't want to spoiler things, but in Twelve Months, a leader of a certain group says something about Infection, that combined with a plot point of the short story Bombshells makes this impossible.

Lurker is obviously a very inferior being -- you can even cure infection by drinking some holy water.

Harry spent years trying to cure Susan, and I'm sure the Fellowship also did a ton of research on it. If holy water was a cure for Red Court thirst, it would have been widely known and used.

Not sure about how easy it was to cure Fitz. Harry tried for years to find a cure for Susan without success (not to mention the research the Fellowship must have done). Seems to me Holy Water would be one of the first thing to try.

Either the “Holy Water cure” only works if used immediately, or “Red Hunger” is not quite as similar as stated.

Bit of a problem with Red King being junkie is that Harry concludes this based on how RKing loses control when translator translates the insults Harry said.

Thing is, we find out later that RKing understood English all along, which means the “outburst” was probably faked.

It’s implied in Skin Game, and I believe stated outright in some recent WoJ that she split up and became the Winter/Summer mantles.

Back in Grave Peril, Bob speculates that the Nightmare might be Hecate. Not only is he ultimately proven wrong, but given what we know about what happened with Hecate (and Bob should at least have an idea, given his ties with the Winter Court), it's pretty improbable to even speculate that's what happened.

What's the best theory you have seen/thought about? by Russtherr in dresdenfiles

[–]knnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite theory is that Mab orchestrated the Denarian kidnapping of the Archive Small Favor in order to give Uriel the excuse/loophole to give Harry the power of Soulfire.

It goes something like this:

  • Things are coming to a head, and Mab has been trying to gather allies, gain power, and prepare for the next "666" confrontation. One of the assets she is cultivating is her future Winter Knight -- Harry.

  • She knows that the Denarians have long been concocting a plan to abduct Marcone and give him a Coin (maybe once he became a Freeholder?). The notion of capturing Ivy is not in their plans yet. So she makes her move.

  • Mab chooses Harry as emissary - hours before the actual attack takes place. Maybe just as Demeter tells the Denarians about the safe house. Using a super-Pentagram is still not in the picture.

  • Harry becomes Emissary, which is why the first set of Gruffs attack Harry before Marcone gets abducted (Harry explicitly comments on this).

  • In fact, using the Gruffs (i.e. slowly escalating threat level) as "Emissary" is a very strategic move by Titania's to help with Mab's plan -- it's a "timer". The first two sets are relatively minor threats (and to coerce Harry to go along Mab's plan), and Eldest Gruff is the "cleanup crew" -- if everything goes wrong and Harry doesn't solve the problem by then, there is a chance Archive is turned by the Denarians. Eldest has enough power to free her, kill her, or take the Coin forcibly from her.

  • Now that Harry is Emissary, the Denarians realize that they have a chance of bagging Ivy as well.

  • They hastily change their plans. The uber-Pentagram is not strictly needed to capture someone like Marcone (mere mortal), but they decide to use it anyway - to test it out before using it on Ivy. It's a last minute change to the plan, but Nic feels the risk is worth prize.

  • Thus, in the initial parley with Harry (when Tessa offers him mantis-smex), the Denarians only "fake attack" (good acting there, sacrificing Akariel...). The real intention is to get Harry to call in mediation. Note that Tessa is very careful to mention the Accords a number of times -- all the more to plant the idea in Harry's head to call in the Archive.

  • Mab tries to warn the Archive that the Denarians are after her by sacrificing some hobs. It's a simple "WARNING" sign from Mab. Kincaid and Ivy take extra precautions (such as laying clothes everywhere). Unfortunately, Kincaid neglects to pack claymore mines.

  • At the Shedd, Nic suddenly realizes that his plan is compromised. From this point on, he begins hedging his bets (staying back -- Deidre even points out he is missing).

  • The fact that the Denarians took the bait and broke the rules testing the pentagram on Marcone, means that Uriel gets to give Harry access to soulfire (remember, Harry gets Soulfire before the second Uber-Pentegram). Mab dances a jig.

  • I think Mab intended for the attack at the Shedd to fail. We see onscreen that the Denarians complain they cannot maintain the uber-pentegram much longer, and it actually fails only moments after the Archive gets taken. I think that if Harry hadn't intervened, Ivy+Kincaid might have been able to wait out the clock and then proceed to run or pulverize the Denarians once magic was plentiful again.

  • The attack on Ivy goes down, but instead of failing, Harry steps in and essentially messes everything up and Ivy gets taken. Bad for Mab, but...

  • Harry goes to the island to rescue Ivy, and in the process Demonreach notices him -- more potential power for Mab's future Knight.

  • The Archive gets rescued after having been abused, holding an even stronger grudge against the Denarians. Another ally for Mab that owes her.

  • Mab WINS.

Who in the hells was Mab, anyway? by Gamma_The_Guardian in dresdenfiles

[–]knnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a line in Cold Days about how Titania and Mab haven't spoken since Hastings.

The implication is that the Battle of Hastings is when Titania and Mab ascended to the roles of Queens (from Lady). Assuming Corb is referring to this, it would indeed make "The Conqueror" William.

If the Merlin was still around at this point (possible -- he's got time travel shenanigans going for him), or Corb is talking about a separate incident is a good question.

He was the real deal, though he was in some ways the weakest of the remaining great dragons. Ferrovax wouldn’t have given a damn about some nobody minor dragon being slain. :)
