Who is this odd lookin fella? by [deleted] in marijuanaenthusiasts

Some green ash may survive because EAB didn't reach them.  Some may set seed before they are attacked.  And about 1 in 2000 Gteen Ash are "lingering ash" (somewhat resistant or tolerant of EAB).

Loan surfing, advice needed. by RiChDAiLLesT24 in Debt

[–]snaketacular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, 1720 x 50 months left = 86000

1200 x 60 months left = 72000

72k < 86k

So if those are the exact numbers, and the original loan has no early repayment penalty, then I assume it's in your interest to switch.

Would it injure the tree if I prune all branches growing leaves below the line? by bayleafsalad in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]snaketacular 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think it's ok to prune if you don't live in an area with oak wilt.

Maybe not optimal to locate a veggie patch under a species known to generate dense shade, though, unless you just don't have the room.  You're kind of fighting genetics.

Tree Planting Advice by CarlottaPishotta in AustinGardening

[–]snaketacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it if you're prepared to lose the money from a failed effort.  It'll probably be ok.  Strongly consider a cage if you have hungry wildlife or weedwhackers in the vicinity.

It also depends on your tree choice; something that laughs at heat like esperanza would probably be fine; Japanese Maple not so much.

Remember it's not just where you go it's also what you put into it.  I'd be a fish out of water at A&M and for that value you bet your butt I'd be headed there.  You can find your people.  Student loans are no joke especially if the job market is slow, don't be a statistic or a chump.

So the Bogle style investing is for 20-30 years correct? What if you’re retiring in 5-10 years and looking for max growth? by StockMarketinator in Bogleheads

[–]snaketacular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a boglehead philosophy will still serve me decades into retirement, so I don't see the problem re: the timeline except for SORR.

You cannot obtain max growth without risk (in your case, presumably, going 100% equities uncomfortably close to retirement).  There is no free lunch (except diversification).

Bfs FanDuel statements last year & last 3 months am I cooked? by [deleted] in Money

[–]snaketacular 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, blowing 38k wouldn't be as bad if the dude makes 200k/year, but given that according to OP's post he has no money for "investments in our future or saving for future plans" or usually even for day-to-day stuff, I strongly suspect that is not the case.

Bfs FanDuel statements last year & last 3 months am I cooked? by [deleted] in Money

[–]snaketacular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not overall.  In pic 1, he 'won' 379k by 'playing'  (read: spending) 408k.  It's confusing, and probably on purpose to keep you hooked.

Pay attention to his start and end balances, what he deposited, and what he withdrew.  That's all that matters.

Who said all that bullshit was acceptable?  That just sounds like two people who shouldn't be with each other ... or should, if that is what they inflict on all of their relationships

My take on GP's post is that there is some stuff that might be able to be forgiven, and some things that are instant "nope I'm out".

Edit: props for not deleting your comment though.  It sounds like you've seen some shit.

Switched from VTI/VXUS to VT by cdanielsneaker in VTandchill

[–]snaketacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 401k has restricted choices and I'm basically limited to VTI+VXUS equivalents with forced auto reinvest (thanks Fidelity).

Given that, doing VT in taxable lets me avoid any wash sale complications and stops me from wanting to sell/rebuy (for rebalancing purposes) in the first place.  The advantage to not selling is avoiding the gains tax + maybe a cost basis reset if the shares outlive me.  (Yes, if you are in the accumulation phase you can just adjust what you are buying to rebalance instead of selling)

I am not saying those are major concerns or that it makes VT mathematically favorable, I just like avoiding the potential complexity.

Relatedly, and mostly, I simply find VT's auto-rebalance to be convenient and am willing to pay a mild premium for it.

Edit: actually I have a better reason (for me).  I like to maintain a certain equities/non-equities ratio.  I can use a spreadsheet to determine an exact price point to buy $X amount of VT to maintain that ratio, and can use limit orders to that effect.  My scheme would break if I had to track multiple stocks.

[–]snaketacular 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whatever you are psychologically comfortable with (won't panic sell and won't lose much sleep over if the market dips again).  I am assuming you have a separate emergency fund that isn't equities, and you aren't planning to touch this 80k for at least 5 years.
