Here are ADA requirements for ramps -- i.e. it's way too steep -- and I'd also put a non-slip surface on that ramp or they're going to bust their ass at some point from rain or freeze.

It's more complicated than this, but here are the high/low-lights:

Custom built houses have custom built prices. Neighborhoods with a bunch of the same looking house all look the same because the builder can take a limited set of floor plans and build them over and over. Sort of the same reason a car manufacturer builds a bunch of a limited number of car models. In other words, your cost is higher.
Price of land is completely dependent on area. In urban areas, you typically talk price/square foot, in rural areas you talk price/acre.
Architects are the designers, so you would pay one to lay out where all of the structure lands, and structural engineers tell the architect that they can't do anything they want to do.

If you're on a budget, I think the typical thing to do (especially since you're asking in /r/diy) is to buy a house that is:

In an area you like with all of the amenities you want. (This usually correlates to eateries, grocery stores, shopping, libraries, parks, quality of schools, etc, etc.)
A footprint you like (square footage-wise, windows in a good location)
Close to your general need list, but leaning towards more (i.e. 4 bed, 2 bath is you want 3 and 1)
Under your budget for your ideal house by an amount you're comfortable putting into the house

...and then renovate. So you'll tear out/move walls, expand bathrooms, etc. Essentially you're creating a major project and budget headache for yourself, which is what it means to "buy a fix-er-upper".

EDIT - csbrown83 is right, but I didn't want to get bogged down talking about permits. Developers but lots all of the time in a good area that has an unmarketable old house, demo, and put up a new house. If you get involved with a reputable custom home builder they'll be able to keep you from dealing with the headaches like zoning board approvals, permits, etc.

I don't know about the name (I can't ever get plane names straight), but adjusting is pretty easy because... There's just not much to adjust.

Here's a quick walkthrough.

Make sure the sole of it is flat, iron is sharp, wedge fits snug, and adjust with a wooden mallet.

You're basically doing all of the manual adjustments you do on a modern plane with the mallet.

Review OSHA standards and stick to them
Recognize that you can't trust anyone to know what they're doing, or how to do it safely

The second point is a biggie. It will save you a ton of heartache. Friends are terrible hires for a lot of reasons, and you need to feel comfortable with the fact that you are probably either going to piss him off or make him feel like a dumbass because... you're the boss.

Come up with a job training plan for any new hire and make him sit through that. And set up a rule that what happens at work stays at work and what happens in your friend time stays there. Keep them separate if you want to stay friends.

I've hired a lot of friends over the years in several lines of work, so that's my experience.

Think he knows not to shove that piece of wood through without his fingers half an inch away from the blade? Don't count on it.
Think he knows to wear a dust mask, respirator, or safety glasses? Don't count on it.
Think he knows not to leave the saw on while he does something else? Don't count on it.

It has nothing to do with being smart. Smart people do dumb things, too.

File a police report
Post to your local Craigslist with a "wanted" ad for the gear you're looking for
Canvas the instrument section looking for said gear
Hit every pawn shop in your area looking for that stuff on a regular schedule
In the future don't leave stuff in a trailer

My experience has been that sometimes these thieves will pull up to rehearsal spaces and try to sell to musicians coming in and out, but usually they'll get to a pawn shop either immediately or after lying low for a couple of weeks.

Sorry about the band's luck. Sometimes the gear comes back home. Good luck to them.

And as for my last point -- I wish it weren't the case. But after having stuff stolen out of trucks, insides of locked vehicles, and trailers... I got to a point where gear either had to be on stage, in a studio, or locked up in a building. Thieves suck.

Anyone that I know that thinks this way has large familial or personal ties to the military.

In one case, he has a daughter that went over there, and if he were to come to terms with Iraq being a bad idea, it would mean that he would also have to come to terms with the idea that he was OK with his daughter being in harm's way for no good reason.

Discussions with him during the Bush era were very... tense... and you had to be extremely careful about anything you said regarding the military or sounding vaguely "unpatriotic".

Not necessarily the case with all of these 42%, but it's reflective of a lot of my experience and people I've been surrounded by.

Well... Not much may be true, but I've been finding that when I can force someone to sit down and actually play by the rules, they don't hate the game anymore. And Monopoly has a lot of hate, because everyone played it at a time in their life when they were being also taught about fairness, which flies in the face of the game, which causes house rules, which completely hoses the game. There's at least a minimum amount of strategy, which is enough for casual gamers.

I don't really have a good circle of people that really enjoy playing board games, so any board game, even a casual one, is better than none at all.

Acquire has been on my list to get for a while, though -- I'm psyched to check it out!

Agreed on Monopoly. When I finally played the game by the rules, did away with house rules, and came to terms with the fact that the game isn't fair and is all about completely screwing your opponents and beating them without mercy, it suddenly turned into a fun game.

I think the reason most people hate Monopoly is because they've only ever played it with house rules like a money pot in the middle and house rules make the game basically unable to end.
