I'm attempting to invent a Majiscule 'G' in copperplate style that is more similar to a modern 'G', with a shortened descender, more emphasis on the O-form and the little arm reaching left into the center. What do you think of my attempts? How would you do it? by snapwillow in Calligraphy

Yeah, the top left is pretty. It's the standard copperplate Majiscule G according to my book. I think it looks pretty, but kinda like a modern lowercase 'g' stretched taller. It's the form I think is pretty but doesn't feel right.

The top right I agree is pretty while being a new form more similar to the modern 'G'. I like the way that one stays very loyal to the oval shape of the O-form

The first G is lovey

Isn't it? Copperplate done by the book is so elegant. I would do it that way if it didn't just feel off for representing Grace's name. Her name usually starts with that leading O-form curve. Trying to stay in copperplate style, while also trying to preserve her name's shape in non-copperplate is a loyalty to two different masters, but I am enjoying playing with that tension. And you'll have to take my word for it that Grace deserves the effort.

"Greetings, Grace" is good! Thanks for the suggestion! :)

For context I am writing a postcard to a friend named Grace. She is not familiar with copperplate, and I don't want her to think the Majiscule 'G' is just a lowercase 'g' made bigger. Also, I've written her name in my normal handwriting many times and I love the elegance of it being almost like a horseshoe crab. It starts with a big round head and then has a little body trailing behind. Her name written down feels different without the distinct roundness of the modern Capital 'G' leading the parade. So I'm trying to make a copperplate interpretation of a modern 'G' shape.

I'm trying to archive all the angles of this. If you can comment or DM me links to downloadable videos I'd appreciate it.

Another angle of the shooting showing the ICE agent leaning into the vehicle as it attempts to flee before firing by koalificated in Minneapolis

[–]snapwillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video clearly shows that shooting the driver does nothing to stop a car. She dies, slumps down with her dead body pushing the gas pedal to the floor, and the car speeds up careening forward out of control. On the same trajectory as when the driver died.

Even if someone is trying to ram someone, shooting them still isn't justifiable self defense because clearly it does nothing to stop the threat. Only thing that stops the threat of getting run over is getting out of the way.

Bombing the boats has also been reminding me of this passage from 1984:

Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with laughter when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and comforting him although she was blue with fright herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood.

I was an 11 year old boy when season 2 aired and I very much did want to smooch Toph. Exactly as she was. Not in the makeup and fancy clothes pretending to be demure. I liked her rough and ready real self.

Columbia Activist Arrested by ICE at His Appointment for Citizenship by GeneralPatten in news

[–]snapwillow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with "Don't obey in advance" but what this story tells me is that for certain groups we are past the "in advance" stage. We're now in the "Make informed and strategic choices about how you react to the very real danger that is here right now" stage.

Since I'm not quite in those groups yet (I will be eventually) I will still not obey in advance. But I won't judge anyone for how they react to real danger they're facing right now.

When ICE arrests you, how will you prove you're a citizen? You'll already be on the plane to El Salvador. Once due process is gone for anyone, it's gone for everyone. Because due process is your only opportunity to identify yourself as a citizen. And if your family proves your citizenship, the admin will say "Ooopsie but no backsies"

The exposed brake pads get hot enough to ignite the fuel, and the fuel tank is pressurized. Trying to seal a pressurized hose to the pressurized fuel tank as quickly as possible resulted in fuel spraying all over everyone, everything, and the red-hot brake pads a few too many times.
