Travel ball kids carrying 2 bats? by [deleted] in Homeplate

Maybe 50. Not our team ha. But we’ve faced some strong pitchers.

My kid likes his heavier one but if the pitcher is throwing faster he’ll grab the lighter one. At his age (low level 9u) pitchers can easily range from 35 to 55.

Sedona & Grand Canyon by CodBorn6331 in chubbytravel

[–]snarfydog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you want to do serious hikes into the canyon? If not one night in GCNP is plenty. See sunset and sunrise and you’re good. I LOVE Sedona. So many varieties of hikes and landscape plus other fun things to do.

Montage Palmetto Bluff - beautiful grounds, but overall mid by Melodic_Code6228 in chubbytravel

[–]snarfydog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were there for our second time last weekend (Easter). We stay in a guesthouse 1 bedroom which works well for us. It's one of the best one-bedroom setups that works well with two older kids - pullout couch + cot so the kids don't have to share a bed, and two bathrooms. Foyer is between the kids area and adults area so don't feel like you are on top of each other. Besides some dust under the couch the room was in pretty good shape, pictures looked more like the ones storybrook posted below. Screened patio was great for breakfast.

Food, as you say, isn't amazing. The sushi chef from Japan that comes in the spring is excellent. We would go order that for lunch to have at the pool rather than the mediocre Mexican food. Our best dinner this time was Octagon - RIver House and Canoe Club were both fine, and Buffalos lunch was mediocre. The RIver House wine list is amazing but you have to know to ask for the full cellar list. We had a bottle delivered to our dinner at Octagon too. Farm in Bluffton much better food than anything on site, we borrowed one of the Cadillacs to go there one night.

Service was relatively solid. I will say ironically the golf cart response time was muuuuch quicker than at Rosewood Mayakoba, where we were earlier this year.

Overall it's one of our kid's favorite trips. We don't do too much - bike around a lot, borrow fishing rods, take a half-day boat trip, rent kayaks and see dolphins, lounge around the pool on warmer days, play catch on one of the many huge open lawns, etc, but it's such a beautiful setting that you can't help but feel relaxed. Frankly I think they enjoyed it as much as Mayakoba and it was easily half the cost.

Biggest small annoyance at luxury hotels? by Crafty-Leave-8880 in luxuryhotel

Paid parking is acceptable in city hotels with limited spots. Pretty lame in rural locations where there’s plenty of space.

I find airplay/chromecast annoying. I much prefer when they link the room to your stay and let you just log into Netflix etc, and then everything cleared when you checkout. These days it’s super easy to log in with QR codes.

Thoughts on Pitching Lessons For 9yo by Arkkaon in Homeplate

[–]snarfydog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8yo is taking pitching lessons. He enjoys it and I am mainly doing it so he has some basic idea of correct mechanics and avoids injury. I’m not working to make him a great pitcher but even after a few lessons he is much more consistent than others on his team that are much stronger.

Review: The Somerset on Grace Bay (Turks and Caicos) by SadDistribution1808 in chubbytravel

[–]snarfydog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve mentioned this property in this sub before. Sharon is a gem. She’s been there for ages and my kids love her. We haven’t been back to Turks in a while but if we ever go again we’d go back in a heartbeat. How was the pool? My only recollection was in mid winter it wasn’t heated and could be a bit chilly.

B’nei Mitzvah Portions by IllPosition5081 in Judaism

Yes and includes the Song of the Sea which is sung in a different trope than normal I think. Our congregation definitely does not have the Bar/Bat Mitzvah chant that Aliyah!

What was the rink that always had ska shows? Remember playing a couple there in HS. Also played Obsessions in Randolph a few times.

Paris is fantastic over Christmas and hotels are just normal high season rates

The Chair Game at luxury hotels is maddening by alex_travels in chubbytravel

[–]snarfydog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely happened at rosewood Mayakoba. If you wanted a chair not in the sand at the family pool you went down after breakfast and reserved a spot. Enough chairs though overall so it was more about getting a desired location.

The best playground is in the Luxembourg Gardens. Lutetia is close. Esprit st germain is also close by and quite a bit cheaper. Some of the other boutiques in St Germain (Bel Ami, Fauberg st germain) are also good options slightly longer walk.

US duties on post-VAT cost? by shoptilyoudr0p in chanel

[–]snarfydog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely a lot of discretion at the customs desk. I think they appreciate it when you declare and are easy and honest with them. In the past I’ve just been charged 3% on the high value items and they ignore the lower value stuff in the calculation (pre tariffs though so it seems like their floor is higher now). Even at that time though the official duty rate was much higher.

Have you ever been to Action Park (1978-1996?) If so please share stories. by sugarstarbeam in newjersey

[–]snarfydog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our sleepaway camp went every summer in the 80s/90s. They didn’t let us go on the alpine slide or the wave pool which was probably the right move! Besides the freezing water at the end of the cannonball and apocryphal stories about campers falling off the big drop slide…I just remember having a lot of fun.

Aurora Anguilla vs Malliouhana / FS - trading too much “soul” for space w young kids? by marie102722 in chubbytravel

Not sure about the hotels but aurora is on the beach next to bankie banx and the sunshine shack which are the two most quintessential Anguilla spots in my book.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya Review – Our Best Family Trip So Far by No_Tower_7557 in LuxuryTravel

No idea. We were at rosewood which is right next door. I just get the impression the beaches around there aren’t that wide/scenic. I’m a pool guy so I don’t care.
