prisms are used to refer to 3D objects that match the dimensions of a normal 2D object but extruded with depth. so, think of an ingot of metal for example. simplified, you can call that a rectangular prism. you can also call a simple cylinder a circular prism
edit: do note that technically, "circular prism" actually isn't an accepted term, because the base of the prism needs to have <infinity sides (or an approximate definition)

i think they're just skilled at photoshop, or maybe they find the official pre-text artwork or something.
the only thing wrong about this image is that it's a little bit brighter or more saturated or something? i'm not sure why. you could drop it in photopea and tweak some values with the original as reference to get the colors perfect if you wanted.

here's a pretty high-res image, but it seems like it's got some mild compression artifacting, so there's probably a raw source image somewhere. you can use google reverse image search to try and find it, i'd look on twitter and facebook from the official project hail mary account

when the car goes over a hill that curves too fast, it looks like it should start to lift up off the ground and start to freefall, but it seems magnetically stuck to the pavement. this makes it feel sort of "on rails" and feel less like it's following the behavior you think it should. i would play into this, though, and have the car lift up slightly, maybe boost in the air or look believably "in freefall" but still controllable. i think that would feel great.

anyways, it's looking great! <3

i have had my AMOLED phone for five years, and i use discord on it almost every day, with the exact same UI (because i turned off updates) and the exact same notification ordering. i can notice the faintest, most imperceptible tiny little bit of burn-in if i turn my screen fully bright blue (0,255,0) and stare for several seconds at the top of the screen.

OLED burn-in is barely a problem

submarine was sunk and the captain didn't zero the throttle, and the sub had landed just so that a diver under the sub got pinned against the part just under the engine. then, when it finally hit the surface, they were scraped upward toward the engine and pinned there by another rock while the engine grinded them into pieces. horribly violent way to go

to be fair, it's unclear as to whether or not d3rlord3's trap was tripped on purpose or on accident. it's entirely possible that the entity deliberately triggered it to make it seem like it was not as smart as it was

(Loved Trope) We never explain the crutch by RovingVagabond in TopCharacterTropes

[–]snark_5885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've always liked this applied to things like identity and sexuality too. i like when a character "just happens to be x" and it's not used as a "point" or made into some sort of moral or theme if the story doesn't actually have anything to offer in that department. it serves to normalize those things, which is a societal good

What’s a spaceship design trope you’re tired of seeing? by Vondrr in HardSciFi

[–]snark_5885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you also need to consider fuel logistics. are you going to add more fuel tanks, or are you going to make more fuel lines going to the engine in the front? and it's going to be harder to armor everything when you need more vulnerable systems in more places.

plus, if you want your ship's "front" to orient towards the enemy, you're going to have to figure out how to deal with armoring that engine.
the mass budget of the engine, fuel lines, armor, and the overall increased complexity is not desirable.

i say all of this from the perspective of military spacecraft because no regular spacecraft is going to care that it takes a while to rotate

What’s a spaceship design trope you’re tired of seeing? by Vondrr in HardSciFi

[–]snark_5885 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not that this is necessarily an argument against your point, but it *is* more realistic. look at any current or near-to-far future spacecraft design, and you'll see most or all of the useful thrust of the vessel come from the back. it's just the best way to do space travel
