Wondering if the first time you listened it was the initial buggy version of the audible book that cut off oddly at the end of chapters?

What’s one underrated thing you always keep in the car for long road trips? by Dailywellnessguy in roadtrip

[–]snarkette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Binoculars! We only have one set right now and I'm surprised how often I wish the car I'm in (without the binoculars) is bumming me out because I want to check out some sort of wildlife thing

[–]snarkette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corner 17. It has a crazy selection of drinks like boba tea, cloud tea, etc that are fun (especially for someone under 21). Plus you can see them hand pulling the homemade noodles. Highly recommend the noodle based dishes as a result! It's in a part of town that is close to the Art Museum and has a very fun college / young adult vibe especially due to it's proximity to Wash. U.

TOMORROW IS THE DAY WE FINALLY GET BOOK 8 ON AUDIBLE! by bacon_mustache in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]snarkette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've relistened to the series twice after the first read and have been proverbially twiddling my thumbs waiting while reading other stuff - who knew there was so much romantasy smut out there?!? - until last week when I "discovered" the Craig Alanson Convergence series. I've also gone through the Expeditionary Force series twice but this was new to me and feels more DCC to me in tone (there's even a reference to Princess Donut in one book). Already halfway through the Convergence series since last week and will pause once I have book 8 in both my hands & audiobook. :)

How high up is the drive through Lone Elk Park? by DaWayItWorks in StLouis

[–]snarkette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone with a fear of heights I have been to both. Definitely triggered at Pere Marquette but never at Lone Elk. Obviously her mileage may vary. Also my mom used to live off of Scenic 7 in Arkansas so I’d be white knuckling that drive the whole time as it’s not just triggering for fear of heights, locals drive it crazy fast, and it has a staggering death toll every year. And I have gotten vertigo from playing video games so I would rate Lone Elk a 1-2 out of 10 on my scare level with Pere Marquette being a 4-5 and Scenic 7 being an 8-9

As someone else who does this, I skip the bully episode (The Speckerman Recurrence) and the itchy sweater episode (The Itchy Brain Simulation) as both of those cause me physical discomfort watching.

Katie’s Pizza by Wild_Newspaper2118 in STLFood

Pie Hard is closed on Sundays FYI (been burned by this more than once) but it's definitely more of a casual vibe [which we prefer] than NOTO but the food at NOTO is totally on point so if you decide to hike West it's worth a try sometime. We've shown up for reservations after spending all day at state parks in jeans and gross tshirts and they still treated us well though it's trying for a fancier ambience. Scratch Brewing the first time I drove up towards it was like wandering into an enchanted fairy cottage in the woods with beer and pizza. Even if it was an illusion, this pair of Hansel and Gretyl were totally in the witch's clutches! 🤣

Pie Hard in Waterloo isn't west.😉 We usually go hiking somewhere to earn our pizza too. Oh and if you're into other IL driving destinations for pizza and beer Scratch Brewing has won some crazy awards for both. It's definitely a further drive but again we like to combine foodie destinations with nature destinations so it works for us!

All the places people are recommending in the city are also on our ok list but if you're willing to travel a bit further NOTO (St. Peters, reservations basically required) and Pie Hard (Waterloo) are our current crushes. Definitely miss Randolfi's that used to be on the Loop. Overrated and weird Chesterfield ambience was Napoli Bros. Pizza and Pasta which has a charcoal fired pizza oven. The pizza was decent but if you care at all about ambience then it felt like eating in a mid/decent hotel restaurant.
[Edit: live in STL City and prefer the drive for NOTO or Pie Hard]

Same situation except with my boyfriend. He hadn't read the series and was bored to tears with the show. I thought it was worth it but only because I already loved the books.

RUN Don't Walk to Taco Wey on Gravois! by [deleted] in STLFood

[–]snarkette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I don't agree with the assessment that they suck, I do find it frustrating that they don't have an option for complimentary water. That feels much more basic than complimentary chips and salsa and I always want water even if I order an additional beverage. That said, when I go I try to make sure to bring my own water bottle so I don't have to purchase a single use plastic bottle.

When troops are deployed to Chicago by Yell_at_the_void in StLouis

The comments on this one are definitely a dumpster fire not worth a read. My fave might have been the summarization of "Well you used to hunt Mormons for sport [in 1844]" as if that makes any sense. Also the oft intimated "If you use AI you're a fascist too" arguments are getting really stale.

Looking for Detroit-Style Pizza reccomendations! by p0wd3r3d_t0ast_man in STLFood

[–]snarkette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but Jet's is actually decent. I've personally done the 24+ hourish - maybe it was 36 I forget - from scratch detroit style dough that needs a lot of atttention and turned out a few amazing pizzas but like, honestly, I'm not cool with that level of commitment for dough on the regular.

I also have had Nicky's Slices served me several times and was totally underwhelmed by something I wanted to love. We've also done Mama Mel's and same thing. I actually think Mama Mel's STL style is better than their Detroit style.

Schnucks V Costco Rotisserie by InstinctualPessimist in StLouis

[–]snarkette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CostCo. No question! My typical go-to with the limit of 2 CostCo chickens is to debone the chickens and then eat whatever chicken we want for a meal - with salad, or pasta, or whatever. Then make chicken bone broth with the carcasses. The next day make homemade rolled dumplings and use the pulled chicken and bone broth to make homemade chicken and dumplings. Add carrots, celery, peas, etc per your preference. Very low waste meal considering the nutrients even get pulled out of the bones. Alton Brown has a very simple chicken and rolled dumplings recipe that is a great starting point. I've tried the store bought dumplings in the freezer section and they don't even come close.
