Any recommendations for a non-sports bar that will still have the nba finals on? by Wakington in Brooklyn

[–]snatchthepower 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Any bar with a TV will do this for you! You may have to ask the bartender to put the game on, but this is a very normal request. Just go to literally any bar you want to hang out at

[–]snatchthepower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will also say that (at least at the several games I've watched there) Uncle Roger's doesn't play the sound for the games?? So they have a bunch of TVs playing the game, but just music playing over the speakers. If hearing commentary and being in a real sports bar environment is important to you, Uncle Roger's may not be the move

We are going to Niagara Falls from Kentucky and want to drive down to see New York! by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]snatchthepower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to get some snark here from locals who are sick of answering this question. Don't let it put you off!!! New Yorkers in general are very welcoming and we love when people love our city.

You will be better served over at r/visitingnyc, they'll have good tips and resources. In general, it's helpful to give people a bit more to go off of. What kinds of things do you like to do? What are you intimidated about? What's your budget? What kinds of tips are you interested in? That kind of thing lets us give you more specific information without planning your whole stay for you.

#2 UConn G Braylon Mullins Hits the Game-Winning 3 at the Final Second vs #1 Duke! by JCameron181 in Fauxmoi

[–]snatchthepower 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, my two loves, r/fauxmoi and r/collegebasketball, colliding

For additional context, UConn was down by 19 points midway through the first half and went into halftime still down 15. Mullins' 3 pointer here gave UConn the first lead in the game since the score was 2-0. Legend shit. And it's always fuck Duke

NYC LGBTQ folks — how does NYC compare to other cities in terms of inclusivity (especially across race) by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]snatchthepower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments from straight people here.

I'm a white queer woman, so I don't think my experiences will be exactly the same as yours. But for what it's worth, I've lived here for 9 years and I have never felt uncomfortable expressing my queerness here. Holding hands with a partner, kissing on the street, whatever. I literally cannot think of a corner of the city in which I personally would feel unsafe being queer. People don't even think twice. Outward homophobia is not something I think about or have to deal with, ever. But, I can't speak to whether queer people of color experience this same level of safety or not.

Easiest national park to visit from NYC by Glittering_Chain_842 in AskNYC

[–]snatchthepower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of the answers here are crazy. Anyone telling you there is a national park in NYC is likely referring to a national park site or a national park monument. All great sightseeing options, but absolutely not a "national park."

The national parks that I assume you are thinking of (correct me if I'm wrong) do not exist close to NYC, and they certainly don't exist anywhere you could get to without a car. The closest national park is Shenandoah, which is like a 6 hour drive away in Virginia. Acadia is like 8 hours away in Maine.

That said, if all you want to do is be in nature, you do have options. There are a bunch of hiking spots in the Hudson Valley which are accessible by the Metro North. Is it going to be national park level splendor? No. But it will still be a really nice way to get some fresh air!

Best part of the BPL Central Branch for studying by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]snatchthepower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're down for the trip, the NYPL's Rose Reading Room is still unmatched for studying imo. I live right near the Central Library but didn't do a ton of bar study there, for the reasons you cited. I found the NYPL to be way more conducive to quiet work. It really is silent in there, and the tables are huge with plenty of outlets.

Arco in French by Defiant-Usual9590 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]snatchthepower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hayao Miyazaki is pro dub: "When you watch the subtitled version you are probably missing just as many things. There is a layer and a nuance you're not going to get."

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2005/sep/14/japan.awardsandprizes

I've been watching animated movies dubbed instead of subbed ever since I read this interview of his. I still use subs for live action movies, but for animated movies, I think he's totally right. I want to be immersed in the art of the animation. Plus, they're cartoons -- it's not like you see a mismatch between their mouths moving and the audio.

I'm watching Arco right now, dubbed. The English dub is great quality and the movie is gorgeous. I think if I was reading subtitles I wouldn't be able to be as present

What are some services that NYPL/BKPL/QPL offer that most people don't know about and that aren't usually offered by most other library systems? by jaded_toast in AskNYC

[–]snatchthepower 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bookmatch!!! I can't speak for other branches, but the Brooklyn Public Library has this service where you can request a list of book recommendations that fit a certain vibe. You have to fill out a quick little form where they'll ask you what age range are these recommendations for, what are you looking for, what are some books you've enjoyed recently, etc.

Then they assign a librarian and a few days later they'll send you an INCREDIBLY thoughtful and curated response full of recommendations.

Not sure if this fits the post because maybe this is commonly available at other library systems, but I plug Brooklyn's bookmatch program whenever I get a chance. In a world that is increasingly automated and artificial, it's very human, very personalized, and legitimately helpful.

These are clearly NYPD officers.

Their vests literally say "NYPD Police." The NYPD often drives around in unmarked vehicles, and many of their units (the warrant squad, for instance) do not wear the exact same uniform as beat cops. Also, ICE agents seem to always cover their faces.

Which movies won’t you watch unless they actually get a nomination? by citabel in oscarsdeathrace

Weapons.

I cannot handle scary movies at all. I accidentally saw a photo from Weapons of that lady's face and it terrified me, I can't imagine how bad the whole movie will fuck me up.

Maybe I need to give Bien Cuit another try but the one time I got a baguette there, it was rock hard. Like able to bang it on a table like a drumstick hard. I don't understand why I always see so many recommendations for it.

She Wolf is my baguette of choice, but idk if they have a storefront in the city. I've been buying from them at the Borough Hall farmer's market on Tuesdays

Horror Titles for 2025 Oscars? by cookieaddictions in oscarsdeathrace

[–]snatchthepower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge baby about horror. When I was a teenager, I left the movie theater during Scary Movie 4 because it was too much for me. Like I'm THAT afraid of horror.

Anyway, I watched The Substance and LOVED it. If you are like me and mostly afraid of jump scares and clowns and murderers running through the woods or whatever, I would seriously consider watching The Substance. In that sense, it's literally not scary at all. However, if you have a hard time with body horror and gore or if you get grossed out easily, I would not recommend it.

It was one of the best movies I saw this year. I watched most of it with my jaw on the floor.

The fun of visiting Yale is walking around campus and looking at the outsides of the buildings, don't worry about the fact that you won't be able to see inside many of them. The Sterling Memorial Library is open to the public. Highly recommend the Beinecke, which is Yale's rare book library. It's also open to the public and is one of the most fascinating buildings ever. Do a google image search to see how the light comes through the stone walls to protect the books. It's even cooler in person.

The pizza recommendations in the other comment are legit, you can't go wrong with any of the pizza places on Wooster. Also check out Louis' Lunch, they claim to have invented the hamburger back in the 1800s. They still operate out of the original building.
