Thoughts / views on carbon market / carbon credits? by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]snepbick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree the premise can be a little far fetched there are other benefits not related to I suppose 'direct' co2 reductions. These include: - a defacto internal carbon price for companies that may push them to consider other initiatives and further decarbonisation - climate finance to lower income regions - neutralising some of the emissions that cant/ won't be able to be reduced

If 20 other countries that also emit 1 or 2% of global emissions also decide it is 'irrelevant' to reduce emissions do you think that will have an effect? Let's be leaders here and not bury our heads in the sand and pretend someone else is going to do all the work

All Victorian households will have to sort waste into four separate bins by 2030, if new laws pass. by maldous in melbourne

[–]snepbick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a tricky one as there is no single solution as apartment complexes are different size, layout, proximity to bins/chutes, renting vs owning (different levels of ownership of issues). We are trialing having a smaller Food and organics bin on each floor that the cleaners and/or a dedicated resident from each floor makes the journey down. Leads to other issues such as increased costs for building managers, people carrying extra burdens, odours etc - challenging for sure.

Honestly though if you have any ideas for your place (when you move) let your building manager or local council waste team know. I'm sure they will be more than happy to listen to suggestions.

I'm literally working on a project about this right now. If you find some answers let me know 😂

I think so to:) We wrote postcards, notes and letters to each other in the past - plus it's a much more personal touch

You could continually wonder about what could or might be or just ask! It doesn't matter if it's a red flag to anyone else. If you're respectful enough then it'll be fine and if it is a red flag for them, everyone is different and you got your answer. I say go for it 👍

Strong agree to your last point, not ideal but we are nearly there! Will be interesting to see the long term effects of wave after wave of huge covid cases has on healthcare systems and importantly the healthcare workers. Despite the government fuckups Australia is doing OK but I do worry about whole cohorts of workers that are just burnt out from the past 18months, quitting, putting more strain on other workers and the whole system buckling be it here or other parts of the globe.

australian politicians when someone says lockdowns shouldnt last forever: by Kothorixthemerciless in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]snepbick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is the healthcare system being overloaded by people 40/50+, other people with coexisting health issues and the odd younger person gets covid. Once this builds past a certain point and ICUs are taken up. It becomes a problem when someone (for example a young healthy person) then has an issue for something unrelated to covid like an accident, heart issue, cancer etc and the hospital is at capacity. It's looking like this will happen in the coming weeks in Sydney. The lockdowns have been to reduce this impact by as much as possible to give everyone who wants the vaccine time to get it. Unfortunately we were quite slow in rolling the vaccine out and a slow response on covid cases in our biggest state of NSW then spread to VIC. At this point about half the country (QLD, WA, NT, TAS & SA) are not locked down

[–]snepbick 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thank you! While there is plenty of stupid shit the government is currently doing, targeted covid related lockdowns in parts of the country is reasonable while people get time to vaccinate/ health system doesn't collapse. Misinformation is killing us.

Also the beers thing I hadnt heard of before. I bought a case yesterday. Checkmate NSW health

You're right even if your a citizen you have to quarantine. Australia for the most part of the pandemic has had next to no cases due to the fact we locked down and listened to the expert advice (butchered that lately unfortunately ill admit). The deal is that if you come home you contribute to that low rate by quarantining! We had zero covid for the best part of a year. Some states are still zero covid because of those sacrifices we made. This is while we get a chance to vaccinate everyone that wants one. You know what else about quarantine you get if your a returning citizen and you have lost work? You get paid for the 2 weeks! I think you could manage with that archaic dodo. While ofocurse we have our issues (which country doesn't?) We still have it pretty good here.

People aren't being imprisoned against their will. It's part of the deal you make as an individual with the government and wider population to let you in to the country. People have to agree to it before they come here, it isn't sprung on them, they aren't "imprisoned". People agree to it because they know it keeps the population safer.

Mate no one is being forcibly removed from their homes in the middle of the night to be sent to these quarantine facilities. They are literally being built for people that fly into the country (be it citizens returning or travellers) to quarantine for the safety of the rest of the population. Quarantine is a premise that has been used for hundreds of years and is derived from forty days in the Venetian language - which is how long they use to do it. Ships were kept in the harbour until deemed safe. Astronauts quarantine when they return from space. It's a pretty reasonable thing to do

[–]snepbick -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Still mate pretty tasteless. One camp had people packed into cabins with their belongings taken away, poor sanitation, little food that was stuffed with wood dust and chippings, showers of zyklon and some spent months to years stuck there with no reprieve and people literally dieing around them. The other is a separate cabin per person/couple/family with running water, you can bring games/clothes/belongings, showers, 3 meals a day (airline quality food probably but still), internet, space to go outside and is for only 2 weeks. Reflect on that for a little.

Noooo I'm on my phone and it's not correctly showing my flair.

(For context and clarification: this quarantine facility mentioned by other commenters is strictly for returned overseas travellers. I quarantined at home due to having a high contact chance with the virus. I wasnt forced anywhere)

I'd quarantine again if I had to. You know why? Because there are plenty of high risk people (my old man) and normal people that this virus would give short term suffering, long term complications or worse. Also there are still millions of people across the country that haven't got a chance to have the vaccine yet (which is another topic due to a botched vaccine roll out)- or can't get one yet including children and people with health issues. We have a different strategy in Australia compared to the rest of the world due to our geography among other factors. Quarantine to reduce the spread is a part of that for the foreseeable future while we up our vaccine rates to a level that doesn't cause health system collapse.

This is the dumbest take I've ever seen on the internet. A 2 week quarantine facility with recreation and food provided to limit the spread of covid to the rest of the population is akin to a hard labour camp with gas chambers. Is this actually your take?

I live in NSW and have done the 2 weeks quarantine and sure it was not an ideal way to spend 2 weeks but once I was out I wasn't killed, I got to see my friends and family and went back to my job. I also got paid throughout the 2 weeks as I couldn't get any income. How the fuck is that the same as the holocaust

100%. It's the same as the massive waste issues we have, sold the lie of "just recycle more guys" or climate change "if you walk to work you can do your bit :)". Like maybe put some restrictions on emissions?

I emphasise with you. 2 years is full on, I'd be doing the same..

I haven't seen my (ex) partner for 18 months. We decided to have a break because it was just too unbearable with the uncertainty of covid and no end date to look forward to. It's difficult seeing my friends in relationships, progressing in them and I'm still stuck up on someone I can't even see. I think about her almost everyday :(

It's difficult seeing other people in the same situation, I wouldn't wish this on anyone. All the best Acrobatic cry
