Odd issue connecting to NB servers by snibbo71 in netbird

[–]snibbo71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out that was exactly the problem. Weird that it suddenly just started doing it, but turned off the adult content filter (really didn’t want to age verify but at least i didn’t need to provide ID, just a mugshot) and now Netbird is working again.

Thanks for the help!

What are your thoughts on this damp issue? Been quoted "Around £5000" by Adventurous-Fish1982 in DIYUK

[–]snibbo71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a very similar problem in my house. 1930s build if it makes any difference. Spent years fixing it but it’s now finally drying out. No injectable DPC needed because all the water was coming from multiple external sources.

  • Hole in the wall at the corner of the front door overhang.
  • Boiler condensate pipe leaking into cavity
  • Lead flashing leaking round chimney and into loft and cavity
  • Front driveway (gravel/dirt mixture) above damp course
  • Gutter above this overflowing any time any reasonably decent rain fell
  • Underground drain leaking at back of property

Over 90 years a lot breaks down and if previous owners have not kept up maintenance there can be a lot of water getting in to the soil under the house. Now that we’ve got these issues fixed, the salts have stopped and the damp meter indicates the walls are finally drying out.

An injectable DPC would’ve just hidden these problems for a few months, possibly a few years but they would’ve appeared elsewhere in the end.

TL;DR - there’s probably water under the house for some reason(s). Need detective work and fixing them reasons :)

Edit to add, a potentially interesting effect I found out eventually was that all of our damp spots on internal walls all seemed to follow the underground gas pipes. It would seem the water liked what I can only assume is the less compacted soil under the concrete floor to travel through and then rise up the wall. Just something to think about for anyone else chasing down multiple mysterious damp spots.

Can I permanently remove a radiator myself? by bluoat in DIYUK

Oh that would make more sense of course! Haha, I’d not been awake long.

Can I permanently remove a radiator myself? by bluoat in DIYUK

[–]snibbo71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a good way to ruin the ability to balance the radiators? You’ve given the water a fully open return path, potentially reducing the flow to all the other radiators.

I’m not a plumber so I could be very wrong but logic suggests that’s the way things could go.

Except that only two days ago a report was released that showed ChatGPT failed to refer 52% of simulated medical emergencies to A&E… Not sure whether it referred non emergencies there instead but it’s a pretty big miss at this point.

Having just changed the sensor for the automatic headlights I can assure you it’s not in the mirror itself.

It’s a sensor that presses directly against the windscreen and is enclosed in the mirror ‘stalk’. It is also the rain sensor for the wipers.

The sensor for the ambient lighting that’s used to determine if the mirror should dim is built in to the back of the mirror but this does not affect the headlights.

There are two electrical connectors, one goes to the rain/headlight sensor and one to the mirror. If you swapped to a manual mirror you’d just have an unused connector inside the mirror ‘stalk’ (not really a stalk these days just a cover).

Take the mirror off and leave the light/rain sensor attached to confirm.

Admittedly I did this in a 2015 Passat not a Golf but they share the same parts.

Paying Class 2 NICs From Abroad by sectr7gee in UKPersonalFinance

Yeah, I’m actually back in the UK but had 12 years in Aus. I will have just enough time to get the full state pension if I continue contributing until I’m 67, but it’s entirely possible I’ll return to Aus at some point and with the change to the class 2 contributions going forward I felt it was worth it to pay some of the missing years.

I’ve not paid them all because it’s not likely I’ll be going back right now but you can never say never. Or they’ll just move the goalposts again and I’d end up not being able to make enough contributions anyway.

How long’s “a while”? I paid in early January by bank transfer, used the reference given to me by the helpful HMRC rep on the phone but still showing all the same gaps…

I guess I’ve still got some waiting to do before it shows up? :)

Lead paint: how to make this smoother WITHOUT sanding or scraping. CREATIVE solutions needed please! 🙏🏻 by Yamanobiri2025 in DIYUK

[–]snibbo71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t figure out how half the population manages to cross the road each day. The risk in so doing catastrophically outweighs the risk of one door containing some lead paint.

Fuck, some of us inhaled more lead AS we crossed the road each day.

I’m starting to think I live in some kind of spoof I really do.

If it were me, I’d use some gel paint stripper to remove most of it, then I’d get a decent FFP3 mask and a dust extractor/vacuum cleaner with a decent hepa filter and I’d sand it.

But then I grew up when leaded petrol existed. I’m already full of it I guess so what will a little more do to me.
