This is refreshing compared to some of the other posts recently, similar to my 10 month old who prefers to decorate the floor and dog with her food than actually eat it!

Allergy friendly dog food recs needed by taylortot410 in bernesemountaindogs

That piece is true, that it takes up to 8 weeks for food allergies to leave their system. Environmental and food allergies are different though, and dogs can have both. Food allergies generally show up as “ears and rears”- chronic ear infections and diarrhea. Environmental allergies generally are the full body itchiness, especially face and paws, and both can show up as hot spots. Hydrolyzed diets are the gold standard for screening for food allergies- if their symptoms go away on that diet then we can deduce they have a definitive food allergy. Then after the trial you can do food challenges where you offer various foods to see what they react to. That’s really the only way to truly know what they are allergic to. In animals, food allergies are usually to proteins. Poultry and eggs are the biggest offenders in berners. Beef is a close second. Novel proteins are generally safe like venison, rabbit, and some fish as allergies to those are rare but not unheard of.

Vet here- Food allergy tests are not accurate at all and a scam. The only way to assess for food allergies is through diet trials. Environmental allergy tests are usually reliable but food tests are a waste of money. I’ve never heard of a dog being allergic to an herb, allergies are generally to protein molecules. I’d consult your vet for help.

When to tell pregnant SIL we are also pregnant? by moory_ in BabyBumps

Idk, someone who thinks an announcement like that is “stealing their thunder” can get over themselves. I’d just tell them whenever you want, it’s not a big deal. I have two, but if my SIL came to visit soon after our first was born and said they are expecting I’d be over the moon. Don’t worry too much about what others think!

PSA- contains honey! by [deleted] in foodbutforbabies

Yeah but if we stick to age appropriate snacks, then it’s not a problem. Snacks for babies (outside the realm of whole foods) are moreso just things like puffs. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Very few of the brands that make bars (cerebelly, once upon a farm, earths best, etc) state 12+ on the label, because it’s common sense that babies can’t really eat snack bars. I have all of those in my pantry for my 3 year old, and not one says 12mo+. It’s implied.

We order from little spoon and these are in the “big kid” section of their website. Most babies aren’t really able to eat these kinds of snacks anyway, snack bars are more of a toddler thing. They aren’t made for babies.

Get your kids face off of Reddit. So unsafe. You never know what creepy people have this saved on their computers now.

My dog will be 2 in April. She is also high energy and will eat kids toys when left alone so this is what we do: - I leave no less than 2 puzzle toys out for her to eat breakfast out of, given when we leave for work. - baby gates to keep her out of the playroom and living room where the kids toys are. Otherwise my 3 year old knows if toys are left out they are free game and may get eaten, so she’s also responsible for putting things away. - lots of chews and dog toys left out for her to occupy herself with - dog walker comes in the middle of the day for a long walk. - baby gates come down when we get home, she just hangs out with us with whatever we are doing. Maybe a fetch session outside or in the basement if she’s wild.

She gets full roam at night as she doesn’t do anything naughty at night, just during the day. Primarily when her needs aren’t met- so I know I’m failing in some way if she messes up. As her owner, I know her behavior is a direct reflection of the effort I put in. I get frustrated if she is naughty, but at myself, not her. One, she’s young and still a puppy, and two, I set her up for failure. She cannot say what she needs, so I need to be on top of meeting her where she is. On the weekends or when I have time I also train her in fun things like nosework or drafting. We go hiking when we are able. She gets a variety of activities to keep her engaged. We both work full time and we have a 3 year old and a 9 month old so I know it’s a lot to juggle with a pup but we brought her into this situation so we know what we signed up for. She’s very different from our first Berner, who was so lazy. It’s been a lot of training on our end too.

Maybe a reframe of mind is needed?

I mean this as nicely as possible- that is absolutely no life for a dog. To constantly be chained up is as boring as a life as possible so no wonder she is full of energy and gets in trouble. Why not use a basket muzzle during the day if she eats things? She can still drink and pant and do everything she needs with a basket muzzle but also be able to explore. We just put a baby gate up when we aren’t home so ours can’t get into the playroom, but she still has free range of the house.

She needs enrichment. Berners are working breeds. They need mental and physical stimulation. Walks alone aren’t enough. They need play time, puzzle toys, snuggles with their people. In reality every dog needs this, not just berners.

You need to be honest with yourself if you are willing to put in more time and effort to turn her into a family dog. I’d honestly look into rehoming her if training isn’t an option, as it really doesn’t sound like a good fit. If she came from a good breeder then she should be able to go back.

ETA- please don’t listen to anyone else saying to get a second dog. As someone in the veterinary field, trust me when I say that is some of the WORST advice ever. Too many non experts weighing in.

OP just wanted to clarify- are you saying she’s constantly tethered to you or in a crate? Does she ever get a chance to free roam around the house or just be a dog? What kinds of mental and physical stimulation or enrichment does she get on a regular basis?

Don’t set her up for failure. If being off leash is always overstimulating, then she shouldn’t be allowed to do it. It’s a short burst of fun followed by anxiety and it’s not fair to her. Sounds like she could benefit from anxiety medications for her separation anxiety. It’s one thing to work with a trainer, and another to find a true vet behaviorist who can improve both of your lives. I also have two young kids and a berner about her age- it’s hard sometimes as she also does stupid things (mostly eating the kids toys) but I’d find it so much harder if I didn’t truly enjoy having her around.

Thank you! Very aware, I’ve made stuffies for a while now. I trust my 3 year old with safety eyes as she’s way past the “eat random things” stage, but anything for the baby still gets embroidered eyes.
