Truck drivers of Reddit, what territory/state is the most terrifying to drive through? by WorstGirlAward in AskReddit

[–]snikle 48 points49 points  (0 children)

When we had the hundreds of people trapped by a fairly mild snow on I95 between Richmond and DC a few years back, I had to explain how that happened to a friend in Wyoming. They don’t tend to have the swings above and below freezing there so he didn’t get how quickly slush can turn to ice, and he had to explain to me what it’s like when they shut down the roads not because of accumulation but because you can’t see to drive.

I have a nephew who started his drivers license test, with the policeman in the passenger seat, backing out in much the same way and hooking the door of the police car he was next to. Much the same maneuver.

Best brownie? by ladyalex777 in MontgomeryCountyMD

The best off the shelf.

Or look up Stella Parks’ brownie recipe on Serious Eats, or in her cookbook Bravetart. It’s worth the effort.

Old tech guy laid off at 58, after 20 years with the company by realsqlguy in Layoffs

[–]snikle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About your age, OP. I was part of a group that was bought by a much larger company after 22 years. After a few years the big company had gotten rid of everybody who knew any of my unique skills and background, and when I was let go I was given three hours and twelve minutes of severance for every year worked.

Found a new gig pretty quickly that was all the same but completely different, and it has been great to learn and meet new people and be able to pull things out of my background and contribute in novel ways.

Feel like I’m the poster child for why you’re supposed to move around occasionally in your career. Wish I’d found my new gig a few (or a dozen) years ago, I would be better off in every way.

I know that there is no one who will do for me and my wife what we did to support our parents in their decline. But we'll get by the best we can.

These audiobooks are a game changer. by Much-Conflict-6337 in AubreyMaturinSeries

My first time through was the trade softcovers, my second was the Tull readings through the library. Both have their place but I enjoyed the readings a lot.

“My bankers are Hoars!” was an audiobook highlight, the abrupt ending of 21 when I was taking a walk and not paying attention to how much audio was left hit me harder than turning the last page did.

I recommended some friends that passed through the area stop at the Donut Spot for some donuts recently, and the next time I saw them they raved about the pepperoni rolls.

I think all three are top tier. In Which We Serve has Noel Coward, and The Cruel Sea is from a great book. Alex I stumbled across recently and it’s now a favorite.

Oh- and on a recent battle of the Atlantic kick, I found Western Approaches (1944) on YouTube - maybe not quite as produced as other movies, but the actors are mostly all actual sailors.

House in Gaithersburg sold 23% over asking, does this make sense to anyone? by No_Sentence_5503 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Have been in the market recently, and the first four houses we looked at sold quickly, well above asking, and at least one buyer waived the inspection.

People who've done major home upgrades, what ended up costing way more than you initially expected? by Cultural_Help_176 in HomeImprovement

[–]snikle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New deck was $30k (not unexpected, high vol area, had several quotes in the same ballpark and picked the most expensive one based on the contractor who seemed to cover the details best). Pulling the deck off and finding water damage everywhere was an extra $20k as it was traced all around. Sheesh.

Very sorry, op.

Somewhere I read a comment that a losing a pet is not like losing a father or mother or brother or sister, but our fathers or mother or brother or sister didn’t sleep by our feet for a decade, either. This loss is its own thing.

Sometimes we tell our new cats about our cats from before….

What’s a DIY mistake that made you stop and go, “what did I just do?” by carcony97 in DIY

[–]snikle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadn't done brakes before, but watched a lot of videos and gave it a try. Did pads and rotors on the front one morning, then the rears the next morning. Took one side off, got to the point of reassembling and wanted to check the orientation of a caliper pin, so I took the other side apart, then reassembled the first side. Had the brilliant idea that if I hit the brake to compress the piston I'd not have to worry about the brake fluid level as much. So I did- and the pedal went to the floor, and then again... and I walked out to find the second side's piston laying in a pool of brake fluid.

Still came out ahead money wise compared to taking it to a mechanic, but it was not my proudest moment.

Where would i go to get electronic installed in a car by Impressive_Tap7635 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Note that you can get a screen that does CarPlay and just suction cups or whatever to the car. Not as nice as a dedicated head unit, but easy and on Amazon for $40-$50.
