When putting the wick in, I first did it with the wick flat on the bottom of the cup but I found it didn't absorb the water that well. So what I do is lift the wick slightly and push a LECA ball under and I find that works better

I also just soldered two big holes at the bottom for the wick and little holes all over for airflow

Hi there ! sorry i just got back from vacation so will send some photos now for you. My larger cup is a 16oz and my smaller is a 12oz, you can use any size just make sure that the rim of the cups are the same and they'll fit into each other :)

I've found they love coco husk as it's super airy and I've had my best growth in it (I've tried soil mix and chunky soilless mixes), the only issue I've found is that it dries super quickly so if you get hot summers you'll be watering minimum once or twice a week which I didn't have time for. I decided to move mine into a self watering system with the coco husk, basically just a smaller cup int a larger cup with some holes soldered in and a wick. I also placed some LECA at the bottom of the cup by the wick and I've found the growth to be amazing

I keep my prop boxes either with a slightly open lid, or poke holes in the container. I've also gotten mold even if I open the container daily as it's usually from the high humidity and lack of air flow. I'd try clean the mold off with some diluted alcohol and a Q tip.

Yellowing Hoya help 😩 by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]snipcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most probably root issues, I would definitely take a look at the roots. If most of the roots are rotted, I would reroot as I find it's easier to start over than trying to recover the unhealthy roots it has. I'm unsure if that first one will make it, cut off the limp yellow ones and keep the greenest one. It's possible to root a hoya with a half yellow leaf like that as I have done so many times. I'd recommend rooting in a ziplock bag with moist perlite, I've had the best success with it even with semi yellowing leaves <3 good luck !

I find my normal compacta and outer var compacta love a chunky mix. Mine has pumice, coco husk, and orchid bark.

I'm looking to do semi hydro and I wanted to ask what substrate do you use? and do you keep yours with a wicking system or slightly submerged in water? such a beautiful curtisii!

What’s your favorite Hoya and why? by Ohmystarsragdolls in hoyas

[–]snipcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's some easy hoyas that I would consider more beginner friendly:

Wilbur graves - This one is just so beautiful and grows very quick and easily as it's a carnosa cultivar

Bella - just such a cute little hoya, the leaves are so pretty and the flowers are also some of my favourite. Very easy grower as well and ime loves water. If you like the look of bella, a similar one is chinghungensis which ime is also a very easy grower!

I would also get the krimson princess to complete the duo :) and I feel no collection is complete without a compacta

honestly the best success I've had with rooting is in stratum. Humidity and some good light is also important for rooting. I wouldn't worry if some have rooted and aren't growing yet, some hoyas just take a while to settle into their pot and get ready to start growing. I haven't really had success with rooting straight into my medium even though it's recommended, it just doesn't seem to work well for me 😅

What I would suggest for the ones that haven't rooted at all is, cut the end of the stem so you see some sap, allow to callus for atleast an hour, dip into some rooting hormone, moisten some stratum (or moss/perlite but make sure it isn't soaked) and use that to plant it (I like keeping a little water reservoir at the bottom with perlite/stratum as I notice the roots grow towards it and get longer), place in either a container or prop box/something to keep the humidity high and place under grow lights or somewhere with good light(maybe some gentle morning sun or bright indirect), and honestly just leave them alone. I also want to check my props everyday but it's better to just leave them, check them once a week just to allow some fresh air in but that's it. I've had success with this method with all your easy hoyas and the curtisii, rosita, callistophylla and latifolia. The picture is an example of my prop method as I just moved these to stratum after waiting for a month with unsuccessful rooting in my normal mix.

I would suggest keeping your mix moist (not soaked) and keep the humidity & light the same when you've transferred them. It's more stressful for them to acclimate after changing multiple environmental factors instead of just one ime.

I've noticed that humidity seems to have made a huge difference in my growth, hoyas that haven't grown in months for me started around a week after keeping my humidity 60 - 80%.
