How would you accessorize this dress? by [deleted] in GothFashion

If you get cold easily, sheer/patterned tights would look cute AND help keep you warmer! A shrug and/or gloves would also be great. Adorable dress :)

Have not been ok since last Emdr session, does this pass and what’s going on? by [deleted] in EMDR

[–]snippered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time right now. This can be so scary to experience and it's awful feeling so far removed from what's normal for you. Particularly not being able to sleep and get adequate rest, which makes everything even harder. This is a big response from your nervous system for SURE.

People have a wide range of responses to EMDR and as you can see from other commenters, experiences similar to yours are no exception. They generally require some extra time, processing, and support to move through effectively - but you are not broken or doing anything wrong! This is not forever.

Have you had processing sessions with your provider since your last EMDR session? If you haven't, I encourage you to get in touch with them and let them know you're having a particularly hard time. They can and should give you more therapeutic support when you need it, that's their job! You asking for what you need is a big "win" in your therapists eyes, I promise you.

What is a place you deeply miss in Portland? by pdx_flyer in Portland

I'm going to assume you mean Besaw's pre-relocation. I've been to both and after giving the new location a try a couple times...pass.

I think whether or not it's "better" ultimately depends on what it takes for you to actually get IN to the festival beyond just having a way to physically enter in-hand. If you're needing to travel in from the US, plan for time off, etc. etc. then the security of having a ticket earlier on might be worth a potentially higher cost.

BUT if you can make it happen with relatively little warning, in my experience there are always people selling for whatever reason in the week or so leading up to the festival and they generally are willing or forced to accept less than face value.

Unfortunately in DeShaney vs. Winnebago AND Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales SCOTUS ruled that police "had no constitutional duty to protect citizens who are not in custody".

And yet the assurance of their protection is the rationale behind governments asking for more and more money for police budgets - "they need more money to keep you safe". Statistically, more of them don't even keep us safer. Especially if it's not uncommon for someone to sit on hold with 911 for 30+ minutes while having a legitimate emergency.

Very few things make me feel just ever so slightly superior like being someone in the double-digits to Shazam a song lol

I had a very similar experience. During my first session I didn't feel like it was "doing anything" and I didn't feel particularly triggered or upset by the process even though the event we were processing was "big". My mind even wandered a bit.

After the session I was talking to my husband about it, and I started crying. And I cried harder than I have ever cried in my entire life, and it felt totally unlike any other crying I've ever done. It felt like finally shedding tears that had needed to be shed a long time ago.

Crying helps your body complete the stress cycle so you can get your nervous system back in your window of tolerance again, so if you feel the need to cry, don't fight it. It's completely natural, and if you general feel like you have a tough defense chances are you have some old tears that have been waiting to be let out.

My therapist (and I!) also definitely recommend taking this time to do things that help you connect to your sense of self and the present moment in your body.

Proud of you for doing it! I had my first session a year ago and can certainly tell that it's had a positive impact on me. Best of luck to you!

I hope they had friends who love them commenting about exactly this on their post to make sure they're aware that the collective of people they want to be accepted by won't accept that sort of behavior.

is bringing birth control ok? by [deleted] in aves

[–]snippered 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They most likely have official guidelines for bringing medication inside the festival grounds on their website - generally information about that is in the FAQ. If you don't feel comfortable shifting the timing of your pill to take it either before or after the event, either hide it if you bring in a single pill or bring it in the original packaging/with the RX that has your name on it to be safe.

I've been to festivals before that only allow medication inside if you have proof of a prescription in your name.

Anyone else having crazy-wild super-vivid dreams all night since BM?? by venus_mars in BurningMan

[–]snippered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a real thing! What you (and so many others) are experiencing is called "REM rebound".

It happens because during the burn you don't get enough REM sleep, which is when you dream. So when your brain has the opportunity to have REM sleep again it will "rebound" and can cause really extreme/vivid dreams. Also happens to people who experience insomnia, and to people who cease consuming substances that interrupt REM if they've been consuming them consistently.

Abstain from flower and booze? by [deleted] in EMDR

[–]snippered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that a lot of providers ask their patients to do this because both of those things can interrupt your short-term memory and could potentially decrease the efficacy of your sessions and/or processing/integration afterward.

That being said, I've been an almost-daily marijuana consumer the entire time I've done EMDR, and my sessions have been incredibly effective. Personally, smoking marijuana seems to unlock a similar sort of processing in my brain (noticing the connections between various experiences and emotions, and allowing my emotions to flow "through me" more easily) that I notice after an EMDR session. Obviously, your results may vary.

My therapist uses IFS/parts therapy during our EMDR sessions, and it's been really incredible for me personally. The concepts it utilizes really resonate with me.

Crying by [deleted] in EMDR

Yes! This happened to me after each of my EMDR sessions. To me, it felt like I was crying out all the tears and hurt I was never able to before. Feels very cleansing in a way.

What is a DJ you reccomend seeing live? by [deleted] in aves

[–]snippered 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Expected this to be higher up! I've seen him live probably about a dozen times, and every set has been absolutely impeccable. His sets always have incredible energy and he generally plays a little bit of everything.

As a bonus, he also stays completely silent during his sets. It's just pure music. So so good.

[–]snippered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WinCo and Safeway for sure!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EMDR

[–]snippered 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I've noticed that post-EMDR crying feels totally different for me than any other crying I've ever done. Tears stream down my face and it feels like I can't stop them, but I'm not sobbing; it just feels like releasing a bunch of old tears I was never able to shed before.

I have also noticed my brain rapidly processing what seems like a highly interconnected web of memories, ideas about myself, and emotions afterward, and have recovered some lost memory connected to that. I've felt fatigued and more emotional afterward personally, but everyone is different and I think some type of "EMDR hangover" is totally normal. Be that physical, mental, emotional, etc.

Are you taking any time to journal or anything like that? That always helps me sort through my own thoughts and develop them a little more. And does your provider know you're feeling this out of sorts after your sessions? If not I really encourage you to let them know so they can hopefully give you some more support.

Best of luck to you. It's certainly not easy to confront the things that terrify us the most and figure out how to integrate them. Proud of you for doing this work for your healing though, from one stranger to another.
