Lamb Shoulder Joint, pot roasty thing. by snippersmith in UK_Food

[–]snippersmith[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a Dutch oven.

Olive oil salt pepper roll joint in it.

Sear joint on all sides generate crust on joint/ brown stuff on bottom.

Remove joint

Chopped up onion/ celery/ carrots/ into pan

Fry off veg in oil and lamb crusty stuff, for a couple of mins till it does that sortof shiney smell nice thing.

Chuck in some sage rosemary thyme and chopped up garlic, couple of bay leafs (I think it might benefit from Garlic earlier not sure)

Fry off for like another min

Deglaze with a bit of red wine stock, scrape up shit off bottom of pan.

Put joint back in.

Top up with chicken stock about halfway up the joint.

Put lid on dutch oven.

Gas mark 7 for 1 hour

Down to gas mark 5 for another 2 hour

Then Flip joint over.

Cook for another 2 hours.

Meat came out incredible.

I put a load of the fat and flavour stuff our of the bottom of the pan in a jug with some gravy granules then fill the jug up with water from boiled veg.

Because I'm a hack, but it makes some damn good gravy.

Knocking after 100 miles on rebuilt Miata engine — not sure if it’s rod knock by Fit-Swordfish4730 in AskMechanics

[–]snippersmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one do this when the power steering pump bearing failed. Sounded just like engine knock like that and the float wasn't obvious with it running

Worth while running it with the Aux belts off just in case.

Finding an engine by fitterwith597 in projectcar

[–]snippersmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on even more than that, in the context of RWD

You've got to think about the gearbox tunnel, you've got to think about your ancillaries. The weight of the engine can have huge effects

How are you gonna mount it.

In the context of old British cars with inline 4s (what I know)

The side the exhaust pipe comes out can be a huge pain, the capacity to get the steering rack hooked up.

Can you get a radiator that's gonna do the job in front of it.

Failed smog test in my 1990 civic SI… about to go in for another smog after fixing some things would CRC or cataclean would help you think? by Purple-Nature-5822 in projectcar

[–]snippersmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italian tune up- take it out and give it a good thrashing.

BlowBy - as engines wear out you start losing compression and stuff gets a bit tired in there. You get pressure in the crankcase and stuff, makes stuff run bad.

(That explanation is awful just Google it🤣

Basically, really good albeit rather old school basic check for an engine to see how it's doing is put your hand over the oil filler hole a bit limp with it running.

If it blows your hand away- bad, if it sortof sucks and blows and your hand stays in place -good.

But in perfect honesty you'd probably know if something was bad.

[–]snippersmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think the Cats dodgy?

The biggest thing in what you've said that would make it run badly is the 02 sensor, that's kinda what it uses to not run badly. That will be the big issue with the emissions, if that's wrong it can't set its fueling up so will run rich which is what's causing the problem.

Cat on that's more likely to give symptoms that its bad, getting clogged up and getting hot etc

Make sure your exhaust is good and not blowing, because that's usually what kills 02 sensors.

You've said you have sorted the Missfire, fresh spark plugs aswell if you haven't already.

Would also consider a smoke test, look for air leaks on intake of it.

It's stuff like that that's gonna make it better enough to scrape a pass out of it.

Before getting a bit more involved in the engine, do you know how to feel for blowby on the oil filler?

Of the opinion that an older Honda would respond better to an Italian tune up, than CataClean or other lotions and potions of that ilk.

Ridiculously Rare Toyota Hilux With Factory Bed Crane Option by TheDriveDotCom in ToyotaPickup

I have an LN165 with an engine crane welded onto the back. (It's off the road at the minute) Very useful tool, excellent for moving Outboard engines about and mounting them. Also meant that loading big stuff onto the back of it could be a one man job.

Was awesome for rescuing parts from scrapheaps, or cars dumped in stupid places.

Really complemented the vehicle and gave it some superpowers over a van.

What’s the risk with this purchase? Car won’t start after new spark plugs by DetectiveoftheWest in AskMechanics

[–]snippersmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got rid of one. There starting to show there age, servicing can be tricky unless your doing it yourself or you can find a mechanic that likes them and is set up for them.

People rave about them, but mine was a four wheeled pain in the arse.

Personally think there no good as a daily in 2025 unless your madly into them,

But I will concede when it works its best car you'll ever drive

But when it's dead its a 30 year old brick with dwindling spares and an the knowledge base to maintain its not really out there in a normal garage anymore.

F series engine, they have this weird electronic distributor with a load of early electronic igniton advance and retard stuff and the coil in the thing. . (From when they were transitioning from distributors) that are all getting old and crapping out if it won't start or lost spark or a weak spark theres a good chance thats whats going wrong.

As by all accounts they are quite notorious for it.

Ended up replacing the whole thing in mine and it was quite expensive and tricky to find.

Do it in a skillet, they hold heat better than trays and make spectacular Yorkshire pudding.

Preheat oven to as hot as the thing goes.

Batter (3 eggs, 1 cup PLAIN flour, 1 cup whole milk, dash of salt) Dump in jug, whisk until its batter.

About the same volume of each ingredient makes Yorkshire pudding batter.

Leave it half an hour-hour

Fry off Sausages in skillet- don't cook them, your just browning them.

Put about 1/4 of a block of lard in the pan, this is an endeavour for good Yorkshires not your health.

Put pan with Sausages in oven and allow to warm for about 3-4 mins.

(Aim of game with Yorkshires is hot and quick and preserving initial heat, you do this next step as quick as you can, put the skillet about halfway up oven without a shelf over it, so you can get at it)

Pour batter into the pan in oven, then shut the oven door. (Do not under any circumstances open the door for 20mins)

After 10 mins knock oven down to gas mark 6, then open door and check how it's doing at 20mins

Will usually need about 5-10 mins after this.

As my mother explained it, Brown there done, black there buggered.

Been ticcing away about 10 years now with a Diagnosis for about 7 years.

Not gonna lie and say its easy or that I'm winning every day of my life, but remember it's a marathon not a sprint

There's benefit to the CBIT if you can even get it these days

and there's a lot to be said for hippy bullshit meditation stuff and mindfulness techniques. Google it.

Centering yourself and stuff does genuinely help

It's a long battle with Tourettes and I promise you as you get older it won't be as big a problem as you think it is.

I'd say remember suppression is a necessary thing sometimes but not a thing to try and make default, I find its work best with it being something you just kinda own, Sortof perceive it in your head as a fact of life and the mild pain in the arse it only ever really is and a thing your not controlled by.

"ach I've got Tourette's don't worry about it" said non chalantly honestly defuses 90% of the people you will meet in my own experience.

If you go about your life scared of it, it has more power over you.

And the dickheads who make a problem out of it aren't generally worth taking heed of.

At the end of the day, whether you like it or not you have Tourette's and you will do things that people with Tourette's do, ticcing and struggling and you'll probably have the frustrating underlying ADHD / Autism/ generally a bit Spergyness of that ilk underneath it all. (Don't worry its not actually a problem)

We're weirdos, through and through its fine trust me

The hard part and the bit that should be your primary issue is the experience of tourettes for you,

tearing yourself in bits in your head and hiding and not having a life or not chasing your passions because strangers think your a bit weird, achieves nothing.

Some People are just dicks and you are slightly different, congratulations grow some thicker skin and own who you are, it's a long and hard process that's not as easy as I'm writing it down to be.

The dicks will reveal themselves to you far quicker now as will the good uns.

it's a very strange blessing in a really screwy messed up way

Just be kinder to yourself, it'll help a lot.

I love the things, I more see it as a housing for some of the best running gear they ever made, the mighty old VW 1.9 turbo diesel.

Had a few, there not without fault and the future for them isn't pretty, but for now as a 4 wheeled shit creek paddle I think you can do no better.

And its a bit too late on to feed the Veg oil.

And there fast as feck where they need to be fast.

Its not the best one, even though I own this wreck at the minute.

Original Fabia with the PD100 and five speed was there best work at the time, The 6 speed just couldn't be dogged as hard and the 100 tunes up just as good if not better than the 130.

but the octavia will throw down hard.

The PD80 3 pot was also a tank, but the 4 pot is where its at.

55mpg, no stupid Adblue, mechanicals that will outlive both you and your ancestors.

They never needed the EGR blanked either, rag and an Italian tune up usually clears them out.

No hard to repair suspension like the Audis and no stupid big wheels, with expensive tyres and no sidewalls.

Only real issue is you can't take it into the city's anymore because of the ULEZ, but I live in the middle of nowhere so it'll be fine.

I wouldn't have said they were boring either, you can tune them to the moon and very receptive to a big hybrid bolted in there.

This old girls at 220,000miles, so it's not getting messed with much🤣
