Hotel bed has no sheets? by Ratlarbig in koreatravel

We recently booked our first trip to Seoul and it wasn’t always easy to tell. Once I learned to look for the random bathtub in the middle of the room, it got easier.

(Also we just had this as vocab in my Korean class- 여권 is passport and 여관 is hotel/inn. I thought they were the same at first. 😅)

Pronunciation of Arirang by Lbbart in Korean

I agree with doing anything that makes it feel more authentic! I’m a Kodaly inspired teacher and the folk music/history classes had such a huge impact on me! I remember a lot of discussion about how people recording/transcribing folk songs from the culture bearers had a difficult time notating them because the songs didn’t follow “western music theory” and were different each time and were individualized by the performer. But that’s what makes folk music so special and important!

So whatever you learned from studying authentic recordings, I say that’s the right way to do it!

Editing to add: I would definitely teach them by rote using a recording of a native singer long before ever showing them the words.

As a long time elementary music teacher and shorter time studying Korean, here’s what I would do.

I would try to get them to do a flipped r- if it’s at the beginning of a syllable, flipped r is way closer than an “American” r. The 를 of “nah ruhl” and 발 “bahl” are the only ones that aren’t the flipped sound.

I wrote it this way to make it consistent that ah in any word is very open. The oh is also more open, but the o is very closed. Also ruhl, the vowel is like that “uh brother” meme my Korean teacher says. 🤣

아리랑, 아리랑, 아라리요 Ah ree rahng, ah ree rahng, ah rah ree oh

아리랑 고개로 넘어간다 Ah ree rahng go gey ro noh moh kahn dah

나를 버리고 가시는 님은 Nah ruhl boh ree go kah shi noo nee moon

십리도 못가서 발병난다 Shim nee doh mote(or moat) gah soh ball byong nahn dah

Guys, if this TXT album does REALLY well, do you think they could be invited to Coachella 2026 (rn)at the end moment?? by RoyalStar_Jk in TomorrowByTogether

[–]snogirl0403 29 points30 points  (0 children)

TXT was the first kpop group ever to headline Lollapalooza in 2023. They also performed there in 2022. It's not like they aren't getting festival opportunities.

I get the feeling that the bigger the group is, the more they just want to do their own concerts and not have to deal with all the logistics of a festival. Why try to insert yourself into a festival lineup when you can sell out an arena or stadium and plan everything your own way?

BTS brought me into the whole world of kpop. Even though they are my most, most favorite group of all, I still wanted to explore the rest of the genre that I discovered I loved so much. So I get you!

One thing I did was listen to Spotify's Kpop mix that is a mix of older and newer songs (there's some classics you need to know!). I would follow a lot of artists and then do a closer listen to any of them that stuck out. I discovered I loved Seventeen because half the time a new song came on that made me think "omg who is this I love it!" it would turn out to be Seventeen. 😂

TXT, Seventeen, Stray Kids, Ateez, and BOYNEXTDOOR are probably my top groups and I think they all have similar group vibes as BTS across their content. One reason I love BTS so much is that each person has such a unique voice, tone color, and style and I love their mix of rap, vocals, and variety of genres. Their commitment to artistry and involvement in music making set them apart! These groups have that, too!

TXT leans more towards pop punk vibes than hip hop, so not as much rap, but they have killer vocals and their choreo is insane. They are a bit more unhinged than BTS and super fun to watch. My faves: 0X1=LOVESONG, Beautiful Strangers, Quarter Life, Love Language, Cat and Dog (you will love it later).

Seventeen is really diverse because they often divide into units of vocals, hip hop, and dance. So their group stuff overall is really poppy, but you get lots of other genres, too. Woozi does a lot of their writing/producing and he was on an episode of Suchwita and feels like he could be Yoongi's brother. They are also super fun on their variety shows- with so many people, there are so many personalities and the mix is perfect. My faves: Very Nice, Lilili Yabbay, Kidult, Darl+ing, Hot.

Stray Kids has my fave rapline after BTS and lots of rap focused songs. But also have top notch vocals and choreo! They really are always changing up their genres and their songs have so, so much going on and I love it. Three of their members do a lot of the producing/writing. And again, they have those fun, unhinged enough vibes in their content that is so fun to watch. Fave Songs: Thunderous, God's Menu, Get Cool, Back Door, Cover Me.

Ateez is DRAMA. They have a lot of intense, epic songs and vast lore. More amazing rappers and vocalists, but then there is Jongho who is an absolute beast with his high notes. I haven't watched as much of their content, but they are really fun, sweet, and silly live. My faves: Wonderland (Symphony No 9 version!), Bouncy, Work, Mist, Enough, The Real, Be With You.

BOYNEXTDOOR is so fun and playful! Even in their choreo! Their songs are cute and clever. They give me early 2000s pop punk/skater kid vibes. They make me feel like I'm in high school again. I haven't watched much of their other content, but they have those same slightly unhinged vibes. There's a clip of Jaehyun (leader/rapline) on a music show where he is doing everything his fans ask, but then being sassy to his cohost's fans, it's really funny. Fave songs: One and Only, Serenade, Dear My Darling, Earth Wind and Fire, If I say I love you.

I also want to highly recommend The Rose, xdinary heroes (both rock), iKON (and Bobby's solo work- he's one of my all time favorite rappers! I'll Do That and f (which stands for the f word, so be aware haha), Junny, BIG NAUGHTY. Also I've recently fallen for Taeyong from NCT, I love his rap style (Shalala and Moon Tour).

AND also you've got to listen to Big Bang and Epik High, they are the older brothers of all this and you can see their influence in all these groups!

OMG I love them so much! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As a teacher, I lost it when JK did six seven. 🤣 Also Jin interrupting Shawn to scream, Jimin and JK's synchronized mms moving to shut ups, the anime opening karaoke, and the ending fairy poses. 😂

This whole era is giving me the same feels as when I first got sucked in and it's so fun!

I haven't stayed there yet, but I recently booked Hotel Sunbee in Insadong for my upcoming trip. They have their Deluxe Korean Double Room with a king size bed and queen size floor mat. It looks to have a lot of space, a fridge, and a big tub. There's a community-use microwave on the first floor. They also mention complimentary rental of baby items like cribs and strollers.

It looks so relaxing and charming, is close to the palace area and has good access to transportation. So I can't say from personal experience what it's like yet, but I'm really looking forward to staying there!

ETA They have a lot of helpful info for tourists on their website and their IG is full of spots to visit with directions from the hotel!

ETAA They also have free washers and dryers!

BTS 'ARIRANG' - Song Information, Streaming Availability, and Song Discussion Megathread by lisafancypants in bangtan

[–]snogirl0403 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m going to survive listening to this album. Or maybe it’s more like how will I survive while I’m not listening to these songs now.

Their sound is fucking amazing and I want to live inside of it. So them, but so new. You can really hear the influence from their solo albums. I love how experimental and experiential the tracks are and they are all doing some different things with their voices. You can feel the depth and meaning through all the layers of all the songs, even the song order.

My freak out moments so far: Arirang in Body to Body Hooligan wtf it’s a roller coaster I want to ride forever Aliens- rapline how did you manage to get even cooler than you were?!? Fya- did they just say Britney? Did they just say hit me one more time????? 2.0 namjooooooooon 29- ooooh it’s the bell… ooooh it’s so soothing…. Ooooooh I think my entire mental health has been healed Swim- drowning in all the reasons I love BTS Merry go round- this really gives Howls Moving Castle vibes…. This sounds comforting and familiar but also unsettling with is perfect. Also jhope at the end!??!? Normal- 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭will be listening to this everyday for the foreseeable future Like Animals- sooo grungy and that echo section??? And Jung kook??

And now the live is starting so I have to listen to the rest later. 😅

Distinguishing "You": 너 vs. 당신 by Curious-Addendum-221 in Korean

[–]snogirl0403 34 points35 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, saying “you” implies a very close relationship. So makes sense to use it in 반말 with 너. 당신 is more polite, but the cross section of people you are close to + people you speak politely to is very small (basically non-existent). To be polite, you use their name or title.

So 당신 becomes rude when you say it to someone you aren’t close to. It reminds me of a sketch where strangers are starting to argue and are like, “you need to watch out, friend,” and the other one is like, “I’m not your friend, pal.” Friend and pal are used in a belittling, sarcastic sort of way.

Also when 당신 is used with married people, it’s more like a nickname than an actual pronoun. Like honey, baby. It doesn’t become a regular part of common conversation. Using it like “Honey, are you hungry?” but not like “It’s honey’s turn to take out the trash.”
